I want to write a story about what this song means to me and what the song looks like to me visually, the colors are so bright and the words hit my heart every time. But watching the video and seeing the colors does something to the song that makes it even more beautiful, and me grateful that I can see. Thank you, Patty Griffin!🎉❤
Thank you Patty Griffin! I love you so much. I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you! I make pies I baked goodies I love seeing and I love playing your music when I’m baking and you always inspire me and make me feel so good and my brother was the one who told me about you and he brought me your CD. Cd. I’m voice texting anyway I love you. Thank you for being such a good friend all these years.
All the fantastic songs Patty has written and performed over the years, this is the one that I keep playing in my head most. Love her songs and her singing.
Someday I'd love to have ten minutes to chat with Patty about this song. I grew up in Worcester, near Table Talk. My dad was the union business agent. My brothers and I worked in all these shops: Table Talk; Nissen's; Town Talk, etc. We all knew "the Greek[s] and [their] Italian girls..." and the various other lovely immigrant matches in the tapestry that was and is Worcester's Catholic community. Would love to hear how she came to write this. Was it a family member?
This is the Patty Griffin song that took me the longest to get and it's probably the best song she's ever written which is saying an awful lot. On first listen, this song plays like a lightweight song about a character making pies. And then that bridge section hits at 1:52 of this video and all the heartbreaking depth and power unfolds before you and you realize what's going through the mind of this character. And it breaks your heart ...
I will never go to see her again, because of this song., because she didn’t play tonight when I went to see her. I assume it’s not on her live playlist anymore. She was very good but I was really disappointed since I think this is one of her best, if not the best. I was waiting for an awesome experience.
I heard this same recording on Lightning 100 (WRLT) in Nashville and became an instant fan of this astounding artist. I bought every recording available that same day. Thank you for this musical gift, Patty.
I make pies to this song and have for years fruit, pies, meat, pies, delicious pies I love making pies and making food to the song with this song I might sound stoned. But I do make really good pies, and I love making pies and I love this song. And I love Patty Griffin!❤
I had that same reaction upon first hearing her. :) I saw her live once, and she puts on a great show...even though I had to stand the whole time, I felt no pain (well ok, not much. ;) ).
Thursday nights I go and type Down at the church with Father Mike It gets me out and he ain't hard to like at all Jesus stares at me in my chair With his big blue eyes and his honey brown hair And he's looking at me from way up there on the wall
It's not far I can walk down the block to TableTalk Close my eyes make the pies all day Plastic cap on my hair I used to mind now I don't care I used to mind now I don't care cause I'm gray Did I show you this picture of my nephew Taken at his big birthday surprise At my sister's house last Sunday This is Monday and I’m making pies
Did I show you this picture of my sweetheart taken of us before the war Of the Greek and his Italian girl one Sunday at the shore We tied our ribbons to the fire escape they were taken by the birds Who flew home to the country as the bombs rained on the world 5am here I am walking the block to TableTalk You could cry or die or just make pies all day I'm making pies making pies I’m making pies making pies
This is perfect songwriting. Simple, understated, vivid, heartbreaking. The work of a master.
I wrote this and many of patty’s
Thankyou.. but it really can’t be all those
Patti is so good
I can amend, I didn’t initiate the storyline, some lyric is mine
No matter how many times I hear this, I still get choked up.

Walking in the forest with this on my good ear buds........I got dough on my hands! What control over a beautiful voice!
So haunting. Just found it. Emotional. I'm making pies... aren't we all?
THIS is the one that brings me back to what is important in this world.

It must be my personality because I "got' this right away....and it hit home.
Is that how I wrote this..?
Brilliant ❤
