During our virtual conference today, I was speaking to some high school students about what it is that we do as Lineman. I figured I better have some visuals to try and keep things interesting, So I made up this video with a mashup of some older footage! Figured I'd share it with you all 😁🍻 Cheers!

I’m in Lineman College right now. I love it!
I would like to have your honest opinion of a 35-year-old getting into the trade. I've already made a fairly large investment in an up and coming training center. I'm more fit than all my peers and grateful to feel young for my age. I've had a passion for this line of work since I was a kid, but have always been pulled in other directions. I'm finished with the military and healthy. Can you give me your perspective as to whether or not I'm too late due to my age?
@@turdleneck873 the school I’m in for Lineman right now has a 47 year old and a 52 year old and they’re loving it and doing well!
@@coltanjensen4000 Wow, that's awesome! And very encouraging. Thanks for your reply. I'm pumped about going to training soon.
@@turdleneck873 itll be worth every minute, don’t take it lightly it’s the best thing that’s ever happened in my life and I’m sure many others!
All of this and you still have to perform on Sundays! Linemen really are the most under appreciated position in football.
Willingness to work all hours, long hours, dangerous work, miss events you planned on going to, saving a life, you just never know. It takes a huge commitment. Stay safe my friend. Retired from Minnesota.
Planning on going to school for lineman in SW Wisconsin but going to MN ASAP!
Can you cross states?
I completely agree. I retired from 42 years of service. I'd do it all over again.
I am 19 years old and wanting to get into this trade . I am 6’7 . Any concerns with height or will I be fine ? Lol
@Drowzy none whatsoever! It's actually an advantage most times!
@@drowzy935 height is helpful, you will have more reach. Just don’t reach into anything you shouldn’t. Good luck.

Lineman sounds like such a cool title. Good on you for taking initiative to keep helping young people find their way, too!
Watching for Minnesota! My 3 year old loved watching what his uncle does for a living!! Thanks for this awesome video!
Hey, I graduated HS last year and I'm 20 years old trying to pick a trade to do for the rest of my life this video has me sold on becoming a lineman thank you for making this!
You will learn a ton and won't regret it!

I would like to say "Thank You" to all the Lineman. Working and Retired.... Thanks for keeping the lights on.....
Thanks for the video. All good info.
The short clips were awesome. I definitely laughed at "there's something missing on this pole..." I did not expect to see a transformer. Watching from cambridge Ontario.
Cheers from the powerlines from Switzerland! ... proud to be a lineman!
Bet you get some serious views and climbs
And cheers from the UK to Switzerland - my favourite country. What part are you from? I visit as often as I can for hiking and sometimes cycling, usually in the Berner Oberland but also Ticino and the Trois Lacs area. All so different but all uniquely beautiful.

I Love you bob, thanks so much for your dedication. I’m in lineman school, taking anything that’ll put me a notch up.

Hello from Czech republic. It's amazaning to see different power grid "style" than that is used in my country. You have great videos - please continue in it... .
What’s going on brother just seen this video and by far the most informative video on duties as Journeyman Lineman. I’m a groundman for the contractor side for about 2yrs now hoping to get into SoCal Edison as well as an apprentice for LADWP. Almost there I can feel. Watching this video lit my fire even higher for my journey to becoming a Journeyman Lineman. Your a pretty funny guy to and you seem humble. Anyways keep it up and stay safe out there. I.B.E.W. I love this! I’m a month away from going to college but I know I’m mostly doing it to keep my parents happy. I think becoming a lineman is my true interest and that I should pursue it more. Everything you said in this video is just what I love!
same boat. Learning how to work on computers but its not what i really want
I got a bachelors degree 18 months ago and sit behind a computer everyday. I know that my body at 55 will be in good shape if I stay this course but what about my pride as a man. My student loans will be paid off in 8 months and then I’ll pursue a career as a lineman. Best thing is that I have a degree to fall back on if I get hurt. Best of both worlds. Best of luck to you too.
@@chazigo3106 thank you! I actually switched up again and am currently in college. My plan is basically same as yours. Electrical engineering degree as backup! Although I’m still questioning if I’m actually going to survive 4 years here lol.
@@chazigo3106 that's not true anything takes a toll, I'm a welder and I'm already in bad shape could be worse it's part of life, my wife's grandfather does taxes that's all he's done since he was 24 now he's in his 70s and from so much sitting he has heart problems, leg problems, back problems, circulation problems all from sitting all day for 45 hours a week for years, my papaw drove a tractor trailer for 40 years and he had blood clots, poor circulation, back issues, vision problems from stairing at the road for hours by the time he was 45, and actually my wife's grandfather got alot of health problems from years of inactivity and he walked and exercised in the evenings but it still could counteract the damage of sitting hunched in a chair all day for years and all he inactivity through his work, with that being said both have told me it doesn't matter if you choose hard labor or desk work it all takes a toll eventually so choose what makes you happy.

Good one. Watching from New Jersey
🤙🏻 Upstate NY. It really is pretty cool that you can be anywhere in the world and meet another lineman, and talk to them like you have known them your whole life!! You hit the nail on the head!
hey , i live in upstate NY aswell and i’m interested in being a lineman. any tips? currently still in high school.
Work hard and dont give up! My father was a lineman and it took me about 3 years to get in with the local company to work my way up to a line job. Try to get into some electrical classes at school to get you exposed to theory etc. if not available try to get a summer job with an electrical company or outfit. If you cant find a job like that or get into a line school, contact the ibew. The linemans union in NY is local 1249 and they have apprenticeships you may be able to get into where they will train you as you work. I have been doing it for 15 years now and still love it. Good luck and if you need help dont be afraid to ask!

Cool post, I am from Western PA. As I have said before, you guys (and gals) are worth every penny that you are paid. Be safe.
Lineman are like Doctors, nurses and ER staff. No matter the weather, day of the week or Holidays they are working. Our lives depend on electricity. My hospitals data center provide patient results, MRI and so much more. The electric engineers and linemen provide our heart beat.
We have a cottage in Michigan with an Electric Co op. Horrible summer storm toppled trees. As coop owners many loaned our chain saws to the repair crew. We Provided food, water, and cut up the trees when it was safe.
Awesome video man. Maybe being a lineman is the thing for me

Hey bob im watching your video from Gainesville Florida I am really interested in the lineman field. Right now I currently do Line Clearing for Asplundh and I have been looking into the lineman trade for a year now I am 100% considering joining the brotherhood. Not only for me and my future but for all my black brothers to show them to not be sacred of doing trade jobs because of the diversity. If anyone out there who can relate tho this comment I want you to know that drugs and murder isn’t the way out I’m only 20 years old and I grew up around that environment but got out of it when I started learning more about blue collar jobs and becoming a man. Put the guns and drugs down , let go of your ego , and let’s strap them boots up and get to the money and have a career to be proud of !!
Good stuff right there brother, more power to you and good on you for setting the standard!

You’re still young. Do it.
My dad joined the IBEW at 42 years old. He installed galleys in airplanes before that. Was laid off after 9/11. Now at 59 years old he's set to retire with a pension and 401k from the union in 3 years. Full health dental and vision insurance covered for all 20 years. Been making fantastic money doing it on a 40 hour work week. Not too late to get into it at your age.

West Virginian here. I work for the phone company and occasionally hook poles. Though we mostly use ladders except for those with bucket trucks. I applied for electric and phone companies after graduating college with an electric eng degree but got on with Bell Atlantic. I could've easily been with a power company though. I'm glad I got what I did though. Call outs are optional which is nice at times. Though some like 911 centers, repaired asap. Our jobs are similar we even have a crew called lineman. I'm technically a systems tech though. Which means I do business install/repair data circuits. I'm one of those seen phone techs you've seen at the substations repairing your T1s or old analog circuits if you still have them. Nice videos. It's interesting to see how your work is done.
From Michigan!! Thanks for the vid man! Currently trying to obtain my class A CDL. Not much experience with trailers and rigs, but with time, everything comes together.
It certainly takes practice, don't ever rush. You'll find yourself in tight spots and feel like everyone is watching ... Take your time. Better to have everyone watching how slow you are then how you just took the front bumper off a car. Getting used to how a trailer responds in reverse especially.
Best wishes and Cheers to you in Michigan! 🍻👊
