  • I recently found my copy of MTV Music Generator for the PS1 and inside the case was my old memory card. It had the saved songs from when I was in High School and I wanted to share these 20 year old songs I made with everyone.

Ah man this brings me back. I had this on ps1 and bought it on pc. I remember burning my songs onto a CD and listening to it in my CD player. Dunno what happened to the CDs. I like to think they got tossed in a donation box, or something and maybe someone else is listening to it years later, and hopefully enjoying it... buuttt it’s probably sitting in a landfill somewhere.

Thanks for the comment. My wife thought I was crazy when I found my copy and the memory card in the case. She laughed so hard when I was persistent that she had to listen to what I made so long ago. I appreciate your appreciation for this video!

We began with the samples, but as into music as my brother and I are, we had to dig deep into the program on the PS1. We created a large library of our own sounds that we could call upon as our feature instruments. We wrote our own music, lyrics, and compositions, specifically for the MTV Music Generator. The video making feature was good for what it could do, but we kept our focus on creating our own sound.

I am playing this right now while writing this comment lol. Making music on this isn’t exactly fun to me in 2019 but I have really been trying to dive into the video track mode to make my own videos/ animations. I love the low bit graphics.

Recently I've been wanting to connect my PS3 and fire this bad boy up. I myself haven't really played since I was in high school. I searched MTV music generator on RUclips on a whim, and your video came up. Listening to your music, I was humming a lot of the same samples that I used in my songs back in the day. Thank you for this trip down memory lane. 😁

My friends and I would make hip hop beats by slowing the RPM down in the button jamming session. We would time when to press the buttons and hold them. If we messed up start over. Lol Record those beats onto a tape, connected my tv to my reciever, and had a dual tape cassette recorder. Then we took those tapes to a karaoke machine with 2 mics plugged in. Play the beats and make record our written verses. GOOD OLDAZE

You can in this one only in 2000 you just insert CD in to your ps1 when you go to sampler. The MTV 3 generator is better for ripping you just use songs on your hard drive.I made bunch of songs they are on my channel but in low quality recorded on the phone.

I've never found a program that allows you to sample as good as this program.. someone ended stealing all of my memory cards that i put so much time and effort into and I ended giving it up after that but i do have some of the beats on cd

I have read a few comments wondering where software similar to this has gone for modern gaming systems. Nintendo and Korg have programs available since the days of the original Nintendo DS, the 3DS family, and the Switch. Sadly nothing was made for the Wii or Wii U. Programs are known as DS-10+, M01D, DSN-12, and for the Switch: Korg Gadget.

I spent some extra time listening to what you have done, and posted in this video. I have to say, I cannot understand your arrangements. Nothing fits together very well. If you were to use the editing features and learn good musical arrangement. In the booklet that came with the disc, there were getting started instructions, and one of the things they mentioned is how to arrange your work. I cannot recall the exact wording, but basically the following is what the best method is:
Choose a horizontal channel for each instrument in your piece. My convention was to have the lead instruments at the top 5 channels; guitars, bass, keyboards, wind instruments. Next is drums (each having its own channel), bells, cymbals, cowbell, xylophone, etc. Placing an instrument in the same channel as another instrument can defeat your ability to make good music.
My oldest brother and I did several songs of our own, using MTV Music Generator. We are musicians anyway, so we know how to set things up, having performed live, along with my youngest sister, many times on many stages. We were a band. So we naturally were attracted to MTV Music Generator. Granted, our early work with it used some of the ready made riffs. After we gained more experience, and dug really deep into the powerful editing features, we created and used only our own riffs for every instrument we chose. With a built in sound mixing toolset, we could make our chosen instruments sound way better than the default. I my first comment here, I mentioned that I could make the lead guitar scream like the best leads do in hard rock bands! I created a lot of lead guitar riffs featuring the screaming sound of the guitar.

I and my oldest brother had this for PS1 back in the 90's, along with about 30 or more memory cards. We composed our own music, preferring to create rather than use riffs already available in the program. With thousands of music instruments to choose from, you could make your own beats, melodies, and change ups.
Now to all of you here in this comment section that had this program for the PS1, how many of you know about the deeper aspects of it? Did you know about the editing features that allowed you to tweak any aspect of a sound? You could even play with the waveform! I was able to take a lead guitar note and make it scream like you hear in many professional rock songs!
When I got my PS2, I went looking for the next program version - MTV Music Generator 2, and I bought it. Upon trying it out and putting it through its paces, I found a lot missing that was in the original version; including the deep editing features I love so much. Many things were not ported to the new PS2 version. So I took it back to the store and got my money back. Problem was that the original could not be run on the PS2, due to the dark type of disc it was on. It was a type of disc that could only be used on the PS1.
Later I learned that there was a version made for Windows PC; which is actually a better version, because once saved to a .wav format, you could dub your voice into it, re-recording your generated music with any lyrics you had for your compositions. Getting that version proved to be a problem for me in the beginning, because I was not able to buy a good computer to run it on. Now though I have a computer that will do quite nicely for MTV Music Generator.
As it turns out, I recently found a few sites from which one can download the program for all versions of Windows free! The problem is that my online malware protection pops up a message saying the download may have malware attached! The question I have is as follows:
Does anybody know where I can get the full version of MTV Music Generator (original version) for Windows 10? If so please post a link, and if possible, explain why you trust downloads from the site.
    Thank you & Stay Awesome!

I actually have the PC version as well as the playstation. I tried to install it on my laptop but it wouldn't work. I think there was some comparability issue with how old the game is. I probably could get it to work with a virtual machine or an older PC with maybe windows xp. Not sure though. Appreciate your comment!

    • @JimmyTurboMods

You could try running the PS1 version using an emulator. Then you could record the songs using Audacity or any modern software of your choice. I'm going to give it a try myself later this week.

    • @l.clevelandmajor9931
      @l.clevelandmajor9931 3 года назад +1

@@JimmyTurboMods As the PS1 version is on a dark disc, my PC won't read it, and I suspect most won't. The PS1 is the only system I've ever seen that could read those discs. Had a few games on that type of disc, and were on the dark disc, all for PS1. Never found any other system that could read those dark discs, including the PS2 and other game consoles that read discs.
So to try using an emulator to let a computer read PS1 Discs won't work, due to the hardware the Disc Player uses. The laser cannot get past the dark color of the disc. Trust me, I tried it.
I need to find a downloadable version that is safe for my PC, and does not have any malware attached to it.

The 2nd and 3rd were rather disappointing. I felt as if they incorporated more samples from already established songs. The first one (IMHO) is the best and most free form.

There was a game built in that you could play. It was a fly swatter type game, in which you had to slap a fly with a virtual swatter. Not much of a game in my opinion, but still a game. The game was actually not played by many that had the MTV Music Generator disc, as we liked all the rest of the disc far more.

The real power lies in learning to make custom riffs from the raw samples provided within the game. It's a small learning curve but it pays off tremendously and shows just how capable this lovely bit of software was at producing surprisingly robust pieces.
