- Top 10 Most Hated States in the US.
Most people in the United States have a state they hate or really dislike.
A recent survey I read asked the question "Which States do you hate? (List 3)". They actually said Hate.
The study was very interesting. They also looked at what % of residents hate their own state. Not just outsiders, they asked the people living it.
I dug a little deeper and found what most people list as the reason they want to leave their state.
Also, this had me very interested so I asked the same question yesterday on this channel.
The replies were all over the board but the clear winner when I asked was California. They were actually one by a landslide.
Oddly the survey and research I read doesn’t have cal at #1. That surprised me.

7 of these states have Democrat governors and 7 of these states, at this time of posting, require people to wear masks.
Coincidence? Think not
Texan to the bone here!
Taxes in CT. Massive property taxes. The new governor wants to put up over 100 toll booth, there are zero now. 24 mile commute on I95 takes 90 minutes after 6:30am and 40 minutes at 5:30am.
Yeah I'm from Mississippi moved to another state..... bottom line Mississippi should have made it to number one
Maryland should be on the list, the taxes are crazy high
California taxes you just for existing
Yes I'm here right now. Yes taxes are high because of DC go figure.

@vIldpfSdfkwmqspO..z That's everywhere today. No not everyone of course. But close. Lol I'm not one. I'm getting so I don't want to be around anyone. Self-centered people. I work with a lot that's nasty and evil ... It's sad!
@@lawrencearnemann3923 But then you got the storms and mosquitoes and a ton of harmful invasive critters. Florida to me is very vulnerable in so many ways. But if you're happy and that's all that matters. Be safe!
I lived in Illinois in the '70's. The State department of tourism ran a jingle on radio and TV: "Just outside Chicago there's a place called Illinois." I guess it hasn't changed.
Maybe that’s why some think that Chicago should just become a U.S state.
As a NJ native I only differ with one of the observations -that the Garden State is a misnomer (false advertising ). NJ has many breathtakingly beautiful rural areas which is why filmmakers based in NYC have often used NJ locations for New England scenes . No hard feelings Briggs , just check out the many rural counties. 😀
There are RURAL counties in New Jersey??? 😮😮😮😮😮😮
Well, I mean, there are small gardens/food growing areas everywhere, sure, plus that NW foresty area in the corner of the state... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I was just about to leave a similar comment. I grew up at the tricorner of ocean Monmouth and Burlington counties and It’s as rural as the east coast megalopolis can be. It was nothing but corn potato soy bean and sod farm. I don’t think this guy has been south of Newark
Sad that California was idyllic for so many years. Greed, and its accompaniments (traffic, ludicrous cost of living and housing, crime, environmental issues, homelessness) destroyed a once beautiful and diverse state.
CA became a victim of its own success.
California used to be the best loved state until around 1970 and it went down hill. The US will be following the same path.
@@howellwong11 It didn't really start going downhill until Reagan happened. Then CA & the rest of the US started going downhill, just at different speeds.
@@celestepalm6949 I think that CA went downhill when non productive people started to move into CA and productive workers started to move out. I moved out of Orange County in 1972.
I've been living in California since 1974. Everything is just fine where I'm at.
I grew up in a small town in CT and it was great. I left CT because there weren't many jobs in my field, and the cost of living was too high. I moved to NYC, where there are lots of jobs, but cost of living is still an issue obviously.
The Garden State was named that as a joke on itself, given that in the old days, people would cross the river to grow gardens, since there wasn’t room for that in NYC.
That's so wrong your ignorance hurts my head 😕
The people leaving NY are probably the ones from NY City because the rest of the state is not over populated or high cost.
No, I left from Buffalo after 35 years, and know a lot of other people that left after me. Buffalo is miserable, cold, and you still have state taxes and not a lot of places pay very much as it's still a rust belt city. It's also so boring. There's nothing to do unless you like to drink, and next to nothing for small kids.
Agreed. The Hudson valley area is phenomenally gorgeous 😊
Sadly, many of the nutcases are coming down south & ruining the states over here, especially in FL, where I'm residing now. It's ridiculous.
As this video shows, never underestimate the amount of hatred the rest of Illinois has for Chicago.
That's what I hear.
Chicago is still on my bucket list to visit.

Old joke I once heard on the Johnny Carson show. Question: How many people does it take to put in a lightbulb in New Jersey?
Answer: Five. One to put it in the socket and four to take care of any witnesses.
I've got one for you, then: Q: How many Californians does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: We don't screw in light bulbs, we screw in hot tubs!
That is a cool joke!...I love it!

I moved from Illinois to Florida in 2005 and it's really gone downhill. When I was a teenager, Chicago was the ONLY place to be. I was born in Chicago, and I loved it. I still love it, even though I know I'll never live there again. In my heart, Chicago will ALWAYS be home.

As always I am not surprised about my home state, “screw Jersey”, being in the top 5 however like most people relate NJ to either Newark, Jersey City or thanks to MTV, Seaside Heights!! You gotta see “Down Jersey” we call it. Even below S.J.. it is a completely different part of NJ beauty wise. However the cost for housing is very little compared to the North being it’s still an expensive state to live but at least down here it’s quite remote in places. Lots of farms and quiet beaches if you know where they are. Thanks Briggs love your channel!! HUGE FAN!!
south jersey needs to separate from north jersey! it would be best for us living in the southern areas
The reason that New Jersey people are close talkers is that they don't want the wire taps to pick up anything.

I was born and raised in Kentucky. I have lived in many states including Hawaii/NM. Kentucky has many positives too! I love it💚
Kentucky boy here, it’s a pretty nice place all in all.
Why am I not surprised our state is on the hated list? People who don't live here have no idea how nice Kentucky and it's inhabitant are, sadly.
@@AndrewK117 Agree! I grew up, and lived in Louisville for 23/24 years, and for me, that city has taken a downhill since the mid 2000's. You can't walk down the street without bumping into a panhandler, a drug addict, and/or a drunk, and that's the good area of town. And don't even get me started on the drivers.😡 Talk about inconsiderate! Yeah, I'm glad I got the hell out of dodge. I wish you a lot luck.
WHAT?????????
@@MasteringTheModel Yeah, I will say Kentucky is better than New York, or Florida. However, you are going to get a lot of Floridians living in Kentucky, especially in Louisville, and visa versa because of some sort of tax break between the two states. Yeah, it's like living in a second Florida, again, especially in Louisville.
I was born in Chicago, raised in southern Illinois, and have lived in 9 different states. If you haven't seen southern Illinois, you haven't seen the best part of the state. They have many beautiful state parks and recreational areas, and some nice tourist attractions like Giant City State Park, Garden of the Gods, the Devil's Stand Table (in the Grand Tower area), the Bald Knob Cross, and others worth seeing. If you haven't seen any of these, you should give them a try.
The Shawnee National Forest is gorgeous. I like Cave-In-Rock too. It's basically northern IL and East St. Louis that sucks.

The quality of living anywhere depends on the high or low quality of the work pay, job market, social life, living expenses, local culture, economics. upward mobility, entertainment.
I traveled Illinois by motorcycle twice in 2019. South to North and then North to South going two and from Wisconsin. I purposefully took back roads and avoided Chicago and the lake front areas. I met some of the most wonderful people I have ever met. Great experience.
Illinois outside of Chicago is quite nice, except for the decaying infrastructure and idiotic state laws, both of which are gifts from the Chicago politicians who plunder the rest of the state to enrich themselves and cover the cost of their bribes.
I live in Illinois - you forgot to say high taxes & the fact that we have the most politicians who end up in prison. Don't retire here - nothing for you here. Chicago runs downstate Illinois - why bother to vote because Chicago dictates what we do or say
I grew up in Illinois. Can you guess how long it took me to leave once I was legally allowed to do so? That's right... Less than a day.

WOW you don't hear the news fussing about that STATE but California like SERIOUSLY.
I've considered moving from CO to southern IL, due to the high cost of living and housing here in CO. The high taxes in IL make me nervous, but I'd be able to live mortgage free, so it's tempting. Seeing IL on this list makes me wonder though.

And Chicago and Illinois are always at or near the top of the list, I guess because they had the audacity to put a Black family in the White House. He is always trying to give insults to Democratic regions around the nation and hopes people don't pick up that is the reason why he makes these kind of lists. Notice, he never does any kind of positive lists that would have Democratic cities and states all over the list, because that goes against what he is about. He put Illinois at the top of this negative list and then goes into attacking the city of Chicago. He then tries to throw people off by saying he likes Chicago. Here’s the rundown on the states I’ve lived in:
Kentucky: Lived in Louisville for three preschool years. Since then, have visited relatives & friends there, from Ashland to Paducah. Countryside is beautiful. Hard for me to hate it.
Illinois: Haven’t lived there since I turned 13, but remember being happy to leave Chicago to move to Skokie. At the time, Skokie had one of the top public school systems in the country. Some good memories, but winters seemed to last half the year. So no desire to return.
West Virginia: Imagine the shock of moving here after living in suburban Illinois. Positives: Very friendly people & absolutely beautiful scenery (in areas where the coal industry hasn’t destroyed it). Negatives: Everything mentioned in the video, most of it due to the coal companies and politicians who are paid off by them.
New Jersey: Cities - Ugh! Small towns and rural areas - Very nice. Easy to get to NYC for short jaunts, without subjecting yourself to living there.
Pennsylvania: They think they’re better than West Virginia. They’re not.
California: Stationed here while in the Navy. Really glad the government allotted me extra cost of living funds. Lived in southern CA. Two seasons: long drought, then a short monsoon. Climate change is removing what little water is left, so wildfire season is now year ‘round. Don’t hate the state, but would never consider moving back.
Maryland: Cost of living is just as high as California’s. Taxation like you would not believe. Only place where I paid federal, state and county income taxes. State provides a lot of services (MD had the first modern day emergency medicine), but it’ll put you in the poorhouse.
Florida: Everything bad you’ve heard is true, and then some. I could write a book, but in short: climate, narrow mindedness, politics & hate. Lots of hate for just about everyone & everything.

New Jersey isn’t all bad. The north west of the state is very nice there is lots of hiking, history and is quite rural in some places.
I've lived in Michigan my whole life, and I like it. If you're not near the big cities in the southern lower peninsula, it's a very scenic place with good friendly people, especially the upper peninsula. Been there many times.
You will never be in need of fresh water in the UP as you have the confluence of the three of the great lakes right there .....as global warming threatens fresh water supplies all over the world ....those folks who live in that region will be sitting pretty good as the rest of us fight for what little fresh water that is left.
Beautiful state to bad the Gutless politicians have to ruin it for the good people of the state
The people who say they hate Michigan generally tend to be the type of people who either need to a move back to Appalachia, where they came from during World War II or be moved to Colorado and be a hippy
I grew up in Michigan and really love it there but bad governance is the biggest problem. I live in Texas now but when Michigan gets a new governor I will move back.
@@jeangill1187 Michigan voters have a habit of reelecting their governors to a second term, so we got stuck with Whitmer for eight long years, but she's term limited and hopefully a good Republican will replace her in 2026.
Right now I'm just looking forward to getting back up to North Manitou Island for another backpacking trip next September. Michigan at its best up there.
One of my favorite videos you’ve done! I have lived in a lot of states over the last 12 years being a travel nurse with long contracts and MS and FL are the worst states I have ever lived in. Crime, rude people (surprised me in MS) FL they are always rude but I won’t even go back to visit those states again. Not just parts of the state I traveled all over. They not suck!!
6:38 nj is the garden state in south jersey lmao
Illinois has really high property taxes. Thats why some people leave. Wages are much lower than the cost of living there.
Cost of living in Southern Illinois is incredibly low
I can’t wait to leave Illinois!
where u gon go?
@@pokemontas8025 Thinking about North Dakota
@Pretty Beauty why, cause u don’t want more conservatives in your state?
@Pretty Beauty why are you guys like this 🙄
Illinois is cool tho ;-;
I love KY. Beautiful state, very nice people, lots of great outdoor activity and beautiful nature (fishing, hiking, etc...). Low cost of living for a great house, in great school districts.
And Turtle/Human hybrid politicians.
I lived in Kentucky for 24 years. (I am from central Pennsylvania.) All that you said is true.
Better research better dude..Kentucky is far from poverty. The eastern part is very wealthy.
I ran away from Michigan as soon as I could. I'm in Eastern Kentucky up in the hills and loving every minute of it!!!
Great school districts...no as a former student in Kentucky that's a no.
Wow I love Kentucky it's a great place to vacation. I live in Southern Indiana.
I'm from Chicago, and I have always loved my home town. There's so many beautiful places in Illinois, but the taxes are off the hook and the politics have always been very shady. I think the people are friendlier and much more down to earth than NY or Cali.
Nah. California has way friendlier people.
I was born in NJ. Most of my family are buried there. My dad's job took us to Illinois. I have fond memories of growing up in NJ. My memories of Illinois are not good at all. My favorite state is Texas.
Yup! Been here (from Ill.) 50 years. God Bless Texas!
Born and raised in and around Newark. Joined the Military to get out of NJ. Been living in Texas since I got out. Never returning to NJ.
@@getx1265 Texas is a terrible state. Inept governor and a bunch of corrupt politicians running the state into the ground. If my wife didn’t have a great teaching job, I’d move us somewhere where education and healthcare are taken seriously.
@@joshzach9 Texans would all be honored if you would move to another state.
@@getx1265 No, the honor would be all mine.
Woe, you messed with Bills Mafia!
I'm not a Bills fan, but get ready to have all your furniture broken 🤣🤣🤣
I've lived in Illinois practically all my life but I live in an incredibly wealthy and safe town so in my opinion, it really isn't that bad. I've been to Chicago a lot too, a lot of traffic but honestly it's pretty cool. Illinois gang wya?
Former Illinois gang, I got the hell out, state gets worse every year. Would rather retire in literally any other state.
Hoosiers are from Indiana. I live in Illinois, and have lived in half a dozen states and this is the first one whereupon meeting new people, they immediately tell me how much they hate it here and want to leave.
Are fathers living in Indiana called "Hoosier Daddy"? Just curious.
Sometimes :). But people that go or went to Indiana University say “Hoosier Daddy?” to rival schools they just beat in sports.
@Teresa Ellis so there’s nothing good about Indianapolis?
@Teresa Ellis yup I heard the crime is bad in the city. Very unfortunate
😂😂
I hope you're not here all week. 😉😁
I love the upper peninsula of Michigan,it's beautiful and peaceful.
Used to go up there every summer growing up to the "cottage," which was on a lake about 12 miles past St. Ignace. The Hiawatha Forest, the birth trees and sand dune, the bridge and the Mackinaw island...the locks and Sault Ste. Marie.....nothing like it.
I'm originally from Holland. While we moved from there many years ago I get back up there once in a while. Holland and most of western Michigan is beautiful, I feel badly about Muskegon though.
@@JeffDeWitt I didn't know about Muskegon...I agree about western and northern Michigan.
@@WriterandPhotographer We lived in Muskegon many years ago and one of its most distinctive features (in more ways than one), was the SD Warren paper mill. Downtown was dying even then. So they decided to roof over main street and turn it into the Muskegon Mall... an interesting idea that failed.
A few years after we left Muskegon we were living in Cary, NC. Cary made the list of one of the best places to live in the US while Muskegon made the list of one of the worst places.
The paper mill, its stink and its jobs is long gone. Muskegon County's unemployment rate is currently at 7.5% (down from a peak of 29.5% last year), while Wake County's (where Cary is located) is at 3.6%.
I think Muskegon reached its peak sometime after the war, and it's been sliding downhill ever since.
Yoopers are so laid back compared to the trolls down south
I will say that when it comes to beautiful scenery while driving, WV is near the top, in my experience. The Smoky Mtns view along I-40 ain't too shabby either.
West Virginia would be awesome if it weren't for the people. Speaking of which, how did this list exclude Texas????
As a former Chicagoan, the list was not too surprising as the list counted down to 1. I hate my state has the reputation it has. It's a really cool place to live, but there are problems. One day I would like to go back, but I don't know if that will happen anytime soon.
My top #5 - California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
What do they all have in common they are all democrat run city's

Briggs video-record click time.
LMAO
The survey was based on an Instagram poll, which has less scientific validity than a tarot card reader. The charlatan who makes these videos didn't feel it was necessary to tell his reader this.
Same here, lol. Well played there Briggs.
@@cygnusx-3217 there are reasons Illinois residents are moving to other states, crime, high taxes, and the crappy government just to name a few.
This was in 1992 but driving in Massachusetts, ALL the rest stops I stopped at from north to south there were NO toilets....yikes!!!!
The weather in NYC pisses me off. Also it can be expensive to live here. But.... I am a proud New Yorker
Louisiana ranks the worst in many things but the fact that people dont hate it speaks to how fun and interesting it is.

@@kaiseramadeus233 Totally wrong! I know many liberal people in Illinois who HATE Illinois, and want out of there. Just ONE example out of many...there are too many to name. Don't comment when you don't even know what you're talking about.
Texas will be on that list very soon, once people realize they don't want to follow any federal regulations, but want the free money when they have a disaster.....
I was in Newark for a few hours and everyone has an attitude. The lady at the greyhound was swearing at people
Speaking of Illinois and Chicago's crime rate, East St. Louis isn't exactly a walk in the park either, uh ...well, you could go for a walk, but it might be your last. 😆
Briggs, how about a list with time stamps for quick jumps?
Or do that chapter thingy that other you tubers do?
