thank you! i went to an art store looking for a good quality compass yesterday, and found a good one that has the adjust-wheel thing in the center, but it doesn't have a universal adapter. i just purchased the one on your video on amazon now!
Just saw this video but it's still great! I guess I missed a few things in my geometry class decades ago. I recently discovered penrose tiling and then it lead into geometric art....whew. Lots to digest, but at least now I know the basics of using a compass and will buy one shortly.
thank you thank you thank you!!! was so flippin frustrated trying to change out the little lead holder for the universal holder and voila! this was awesome! I was also touched by your drawings and will look up your other works!
My Staedtler Noris compass had a lot of play in one of the sides of the screwing mechanism so I sent it back and designed my own custom pen holder that I can attach to my Rotring Hi-Tech compass. I 3D-printed it and it works way better than the Staedtler Noris compass. Also, the Staedtler compass allows for a tiny bit of play of the pen itself since the surface that the pen is pushed against in the clamp, is flat and doesn't cause it to 'auto center'. In my custom 3D-printed mount, the clamp is circular, always causing the pen to be clamped in straight and centered.
I have the compass Love it! To minimize the compass use a piece a cardstock dot punch out and tape to the center point with artist tape, or drafting tape.
Thank you so much for this! I have just discovered sacred geometry and trying to draw the flower of life with my cheap version compass was driving me crazy!! This was just what I needed!
Thank so much Dearing, your video is excellent and I will only add more detail on how to unscrew the screw to place a pen and hold it firlmly, I am having a challenge on that.
Thanks so much for these tips! I already had a compass but had no idea how to use the extender bar or the universal holder (didn't even know what they were actually!). Next to try some of your tutorials.
Hi Dearing, I purchased most of the materials you use, because I love your art work. But one item I can't seem to buy in Holland, it's the Throttling Geometry Rotring Ruler 25 cm you use. The art store in my town don't sell them (luckally the do sell Faber Castell Vario pencils), other book stores, office supplies stores, none of those are selling this particular kind of ruler. Do you have any idea which store in The Netherlands these are selling, other than Amazon? I'm grateful for your response.
+Scorpio NoName You should check out "van beek art supplies" I always go to their physical store. And otherwise check out "petervanginkel". They don't have it online. So you should check out their physical store. Good luck!
My son received a set of tools. There are two compasses: one with lead, one without. What does one do with the one without lead? Measure? I always thought it was mapping distances...on a map. How is it used for drawing? Thanks!
ive had this compass since grade 6 and I plan on using it to complete my engineering course!! very sturdy and really wear and tear resistant, the only visual damage is the staedtler logo has been scratched off.. I just want to point out that its too expensive on amazon, I bought it for half the price (10$) in Jordan where the taxes are extreme!!
Thank you for this Videos... it was very helpful... i buyed the Same one... I've Seen, you use for small circels a Short pencil... but on my opinian it is not nacecery, because you can use the Knie of the leg of the compass, than are no problems with small circels, when you adjusted the Knie inverd.... i Hope you Unterstand... Thank you for all your inspiring videos... :-))
Hi Dearing. You create such incredible work. Thank you! Do you have a link to the tools you use? I started watching your vesica piscis video and it mentioned a link to the tools you use, but I can't find that link.
Is there any purpose to compass legs bending in the middle not sure why ever one of mine does this and the set screw does absolutely nothing . The set screws are so much better for holding the lead and pointer. Is there any purpose other making the nice compass set useless ?
Hello D, thanks so much for this, I always learn a lot from your videos. I always struggle with putting the pencil in at the correct height, if its too long, I cant make small circles, too short, I cant make larger circles. Is there a trick to this? Or do you adjust the pencil each time?
im going into geometry this year and i have the same compass. i already know about the pieces but all im wondering about is measure the diameter. how do i do that? great video btw.
I have the same compass and can't work out how to remove the led in the compass or adjust it up and down ???? Even when I unscrew the screw closest to the led, the led still is held very firmly in place and it feels like I might snap it off if I try to dislodge it. Any tips are appreciated - thanks so much !!
I have this compass, but am having trouble with the collar pin that holds pens of various sizes. It worked when I first got the compass, but now it seems like it is stripped? Have others experienced this?
I found on another tutorial they are used for the small circles so you don't have to cut your pencil short. I'm surprised he doesn't know this. ruclips.net/video/Q5dl1esizM8/видео.html
i want to buy this compass but i can't find it can you till me where are i can buy the compass from som website if you can send for me the name of this website to buy it thanx
RICHARD EVANS I respect your opinion but if you were to do deeper research you would find out that it is not plastic- it is stainless steel colored aluminium
The pen adapter in this shit is horrendous, my 15-mexican-pesos-compass can hold any pen without issues, but this staedtler shit with its flat holder cant hold any shit propperly even if I apply such force that my pen start to break, would not recomend
You made this video 8 years ago and it helped me today. Thank you.
Oh my gosh...I've been trying to find some directions for the compass "pieces." You can't believe how helpful this has been!
Shop wise
Fantastic Instructional Video.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Just the info I needed. Thanks. I ordered one immediately. Excited to work with it!

Thank you. Know I can play and be creative. Quarantined, putting it to go use. I also love your art work.
thank you thank you thank you!!! was so flippin frustrated trying to change out the little lead holder for the universal holder and voila! this was awesome! I was also touched by your drawings and will look up your other works!
Ok this is what I want to get into. I want to make my own designs for mandalas. Great channel!!!!!

Sounds great. Could you share your info somehow?
thank you, I bought the compass and sketch book and the ruler thing. I got back in to drawing with your help
I have the compass Love it! To minimize the compass use a piece a cardstock dot punch out and tape to the center point with artist tape, or drafting tape.
This video was helpful. I wish they had a ruling pen attachment for this compass! It would have been perfect.
The compass is really GREAT! I've tried lots and lots of others, but this is the one I love the most! :)
+Milli Meter Haha yes tell me about it. Same here :)
Thank you so much for this! I have just discovered sacred geometry and trying to draw the flower of life with my cheap version compass was driving me crazy!! This was just what I needed!
Thank you for explaining compass basics, especially the extender bar and the tip about using a short pencil. It was all very clear!
Thanks a ton for the video. Bought a similar compass and was wondering how to use it
Thanks a million Wang. It helped a lot!! I needed this video to help with the compass I just bought. great help! Continue your great work :)
Thank you so much! This is really helpful!

Thanks for this and sharing your talent. Do love your art!
I bought this same compass like 3 weeks ago....from your tools description in comments.......it is the best...thanks for the inspiration
Thanks so much for these tips! I already had a compass but had no idea how to use the extender bar or the universal holder (didn't even know what they were actually!). Next to try some of your tutorials.
Thanks for making this video man, really cleared things up
This video is so helpful!
There are hundreds of old compass sets, with cases, on ebay - they look pretty good and go for less than $20. What do you think, in general?

+Dearing Wang (Dearing Draws) Thank you! One day I will have all the tools you have and just as good as you are. No, just kidding. You're the best :)

+Alexander Niesel Indeed Alexander. Yes thats is true, thanx. I forgot to mention that :|
I do not understand
That's awesome... Thanks
I'm a bit of a rough handler. Will the plastic parts break easily?
Ishan Sinha Its not plastic it’s stainless steel 😇
Can you suggest a good transparent ruler or straight edge with a beveled edge?
Thank you! Really helpful video
Thank you for sharing this!!
Great, informative video. My compass has measurements in centimetres and millimetres, does yours? Love the inspiration in your art.
Thanx, no it does not.
You should buy the Staedtler 555 compass and Staedtler 956 Sakomi mini mechanical pencil.
Thank you for all!
Your videos are so addictive. I love doodling but I'm not that artistic. Geometric doodling allow me to doodle and be precise
THANK YOU !!!
Thank you for this video. I went out and bought one after watching this. Staedtler owe you.
Hi Dearing. You create such incredible work. Thank you! Do you have a link to the tools you use? I started watching your vesica piscis video and it mentioned a link to the tools you use, but I can't find that link.
Excellent video!
you are the man!
Thank you. But how to avoid making too thick holes when we use a same center?
+Olivier Herment Have a stack of paper underneath. And avoid pressing to hard
+Olivier Herment i use a self healing cutting mat, highly recommend it! :)
Thank you - very helpful!
thank you very much for all your expertise!!

What kind of ruler do you use, if any at all and how do you use it?
+Illidan077q Thanx for the question, great topic for follow up video.
im going into geometry this year and i have the same compass. i already know about the pieces but all im wondering about is measure the diameter. how do i do that? great video btw.
May I know how long (length) is your short pencil that fit perfectly under the screw preventing for it to bump like the normal mechanical size pencil?
Its nice to know I'm not the only one out there with one eye higher than the other :P
Gracias !!!!
I have the same compass and can't work out how to remove the led in the compass or adjust it up and down ???? Thanks for sharing!
What would you use the hinged legs on a compass for? I can’t find a good example of them being used. Thanks for your time.
I found on another tutorial they are used for the small circles so you don't have to cut your pencil short. I'm surprised he doesn't know this. ruclips.net/video/Q5dl1esizM8/видео.html
How can we protect the center point from the point of the compass tearing a hole?
Staedler sompasses are the best. German made. I have one.
How do you put pencil holder in?
The center wheel fell out of my compass and I’m lame and cannot figure out how to put it back in
What is the price of the compass?

I'm surprised that someone of your caliber, uses such a cheap and nasty plastic compass, and recommends it. Unbelievable
RICHARD EVANS I respect your opinion but if you were to do deeper research you would find out that it is not plastic- it is stainless steel colored aluminium
Thanks for sticking up for me. Tell him 😄
The pen adapter in this shit is horrendous, my 15-mexican-pesos-compass can hold any pen without issues, but this staedtler shit with its flat holder cant hold any shit propperly even if I apply such force that my pen start to break, would not recomend
