    📜 object history:
Although the Czchów stronghold appears for the first time in written sources only in 1356, archaeological research proves that the castle was erected at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, probably on the initiative of king Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. The medieval complex was surrounded by defensive walls running along the edges of the hill and consisted of a free-standing (20 meters high) cylindrical tower and a brick residential building in the north-eastern corner. It was a strong fortification guarding the Polish-Hungarian border and the nearby customs house. King Władysław II Jagiełło stayed in the castle several times (for the first time in 1397). In the 15th century, a gate tower was added. Later investments and reconstructions were no longer related to the improvement of the defensive conditions of the stronghold and concerned mainly residential and economic buildings. The further fate of the castle is not well known: it is known that in the 18th century it was already a ruin. Although in 1767 the inspectors appointed by king Stanisław August Poniatowski considered the possibility of rebuilding the stronghold, this idea was not implemented. Renovation and partial reconstruction of the Czchów Castle began in 1993. The biggest changes were brought in 2018, when the gate tower was reconstructed, a bridge was built, and the perimeter walls and the surface of the castle courtyard were strengthened.
