TNG is weird, as in retrospect it exemplifies two contradictory views of the 18th-20st centuries : 1) It exemplified the glorification of the "thinking man" who through scientific leaps and breakthroughs he has killed God, and was on his way to becoming God like through his imagination , technology and ... triumph of his will ... . In other words, it's a celebration of "Modernity" , of the same spirit and caliber that sought to design the Titanic ... , the unsinkable ship . 2) On the other hand it also had in it the seeds of the 1960's-1980's that eventually coalesced into the cancer we now know as "post modernism" , that begun with examining not only our triumphs , but our failures as well -- going so far as exemplifying the 1980's craze of self examination & psychology with putting a psychiatrist on the bridge of the flag ship, right next to the captain . These 3 decades and it's academic products have post-2000 morphed from examining and questioning "Modernity" to the absolute hatred of said "Modernity" that previously mentioned "post Modernity" has morphed into -- exemplified in Trek through the first two Seasons of "Picard" , in which the "old white hetrosexual European male Picard" (i.e. everything wrong with 'Modernity' according to 'post Modernity') gets put down , is lectured , made to feel backwards an useless and in general is there to be lectured by the Strong Independent Female Who Don't Need No Man™ trope . Sadly, said caricatures of womanhood (exemplified in Discovery, Picard, SNW, and Lower Decks) don't see themselves as being just as one dimensional and flawed as James T. "every week gets new girl" Kirk ever was, as the majority of their shows have little to no educational values or positive visions of the future for kids and young adults . Modern Star Trek (1967-2005) with all it's flaws was a candle light of hope of a better, more enlightened future for all man kind, most of it made by men and women in an era where the grim reality of the Bomb getting intentionally or mistakenly dropped was a day to day reality in the Cold War (see Sarah Connor's nightmares in Terminator 2 for more details) . Once the Cold War ended, and we began to usher in a relative "time of peace" -- we ran out of "the other" to hate, and began to hate ourselves in earnest ... -- with "current Trek" being a reflection of that self hatred , in which we demand Borg like agreement on everything (ideological conformity) put labels on those who disagree, and falsely believe that we still adhere to the ideals of IDIC , because we present the outward appearance of our highly vaunted "diversity" . We became superficial . So our Star Trek became superficial .

TNG is my fav ST series of all time. I love the characters, the silliness, and its overall positivity. My only real complaint about it is it's bizarre fascination with historical figures. Those episodes were always the worst and incredibly dull. At least the bad episodes like Sub Rosa were hilarious, haha.
I've a personal theory that 'Hide and Q' is possibly the beginning of an acute inferiority complex, within Will... Ultimately why he refuses promotions... Yet silll, I feel this is more a good thing and Will becomes instilled with more of an admiration...rather three a complex. He's ejected with a new purpose to better ones self... Although he could see this as something ultimately unachievathe...yet that's no reason not to try..!!

One story line that I'd like to have seen was one where a first contact happens by a pre-warp society accidentally tuning into the subspace communications network.
@Nostripe361 yeah, but it was never shown. there are some prime directive episodes that have hints of it. I think there is one where Data communicates with a little girl on a dying pre-warp planet.

Here planet is basically suffering the apocalypse from the movie 2012 but due to the dilithium in their planet’s crust her radio was able to reach into sub space and be picked up by Data. Good episode though it does make some of the crew seem like dicks for not wanting to stop an extinction of a sentient species just became they haven’t reach warp yet
SNW started with a sort of lateral take on that idea. It's a great and realistic premise that as a first contact story would be interesting and different plus allow us to see what Starfleet protocols are concerning this "NOW" in a post pen pal continuity. I don't mind the Prime Directive Eps or how that rule is set up... But a civilization capable of communication through the void before it breaks the Warp barrier is interesting as a proposition. In Pen Pals it was happenstance... What happens when it's intentional? What happens when an alien's civilization's version of SETI breaks into a Starfleet subspace channel? Food for thought.

I watched the pilot when it originally aired, hated it, and never watched TNG again (I was born in 78, so I was just a kid.) Years later, as a teen, I got interested in TNG again and ended up watching other episodes and circled back around to the pilot. By then, I was a huge fan and Q remains my favorite alien character from any franchise to this day. I came to the realization that it was a decent episode, just a terrible pilot. Had that one aired AFTER we were hooked, it would have been fine. (I'm a huge ST fan now of course. Even more so than Star Wars which I also love. Sad that both franchises were murdered by JJ Abrams.)
I'm still super hesitant to even start Discovery or Picard, but since Paramount+ was only $4 last week I decided to give lower decks a try and that is some surprisingly quality Trek comedy. Maybe the others won't be so bad, I hope

Season 2 started off well and then went COMPLETLEY off the rails (Q, who seemingly forget all about his son and partner, is suddenly "alone" and DIES. WTF?) Season 3, though....wow. THAT was great! The entire series should have been THAT!

Never realized just how bad TNG really was. I can't think of even one episode I'd want to watch again. What TNG episode would you same is comparable to: City on the Edge of Forever, A Balance of Terror, and the Enterprise Incidence or a number of many other ToS episodes (not to mention Space Seed).
What about the mirror version of q from the mirror universe? I don't think anyone has ever questioned that but obviously I'm only 5 minutes and 57 seconds through the video
I always liked the Ferengi and how they're caricatures of capitalists. I thought they would have made good villains in TNG, but the openly Fascist Romulans ended up being much scarier and more intense, and probably a better match up with the Federation, who strives for peaceful and inclusive diplomatic relations with all of its member planets instead of domination. DS9 really leans into the Ferengi and I think they work better in that setting anyway
To be honest, i wouldn't reallys suggest anyone skip season 1 or especially season 2. yeah they both have their share of bad episodes, but so do the other seasons (particularly 5 and 7), and as someone who really appreciates "the beginnings of things", for me, the bad season 1 episodes are more interesting than the bad season 7 episodes, because you can certainly tell they haven't quite figured everything out the way they would later when the series just kind of coasts along on goodwill from time to time. Farpoint really was a grand event, whatever one can say now about the weak and kind of cobbled together elements of the script. People were still talking about Conspiracy years later. The Battle was the first episode I ever watched (with my older cousins) and as an eight-or-so-year-old who already had vague familiarity with TOS I thought it was pretty much the coolest thing ever. And I really don't mind that Riker, Worf and even Picard haven't really been nailed down as characters yet. Riker in particular is often pretty far away from what he'd be later, and seeing him get all high and mighty and self-righteous about how much better the Federation is than everyone else just cracks me up. Early TNG is so pleased with itself and thinks it's awesome even when it isn't, and to me, there's a real charm to that, which kind of got lost later on when things really settled down. There are other things I enjoy about the early seasons. There was a lot more variety in the music and composers. You got guys like Joesph Stefano from the old Outer Limits show writing episodes. I like Pulaski in the second season. And that second season is in my opinion just as strong as many of the later ones despite featuring Manhunt, Up the Long Ladder and Shades of Grey. I've been rewatching the show with a couple of youngger friends who have never seen TNG before, and while I have been skipping episodes I think are particularly poor (they can always come back to those later), you bet we did most of season 1, and are about halfway through season 2 now. Measure of a Man was of course a real hit, as was Contagion. Unfortunately they already know about the Borg, whose reputation has broken outside of Star Trek itself, to the detriment of both in my opinion, but I'm sure Q Who will also go down well when we get to it later this week.

RLM Picard reviews have brought me here and have brought me to watch some TGN and i like it. Never liked it before, thought it was weird & looked corny but now that im older i get that its the stories that matter and maybe lessons learned. I also remember my moms bf would watch it and i always left the room i thought this is so boring even though i was a star wars kid ya know i liked space stuff but anyways.
Oh was Riva actually deaf or did he just do a good job with his signing? Idk any sign languages (just letters), so Idk if the signs were right, but him taking up more space and using more forceful motions for his signs is how that works. I learned recently deaf people whisper/talk/shout based on their signing space and facial expressions
I really appreciate these videos. I got my girlfriend into Star Trek through the movies and am currently half way through the first season of TOS with her. I was worried she wouldn't wanna watch TNG since so much of its first two seasons are not very good, but with your curated episode list, I think I might be able to get her through it without subjecting her to the worst TNG has to offer. :)
Loved this entire thing, although I think I need to take issue with something. When Wort kills Duras I believe it was less to do with Duras framing Worf’s father and more about Duras killing Kalar, Worf’s mate and the mother to his son Alexander.
Star Trek makes the huge mistake multiple times by having characters go out of character for plot reasons, long before they've even established the roles. In my opinion the first episodes are crucially in laying the groundwork for both characters and the universe overall.
I've been watching tng again lately. Some of the costumes and effects are dated now, but the show still looks amazing close to 40 years later. And the stories are still amazing. It was actually a show I hated as a kid because it was "boring" but I absolutely love it later in life.

I'd skip the first generation. It wasn't really good. It consisted at least 90% of landing on a strange planet. Having a dude jump out in a bad costume killing a guy wearing a red shirt. Kirk saves some alien chick and makes out with her. Rinse and repeat.

I felt and feel that the hugh episode is the first that messes up the Borg. For some reason, even though we thought the show might end with that cliffhanger where Picard goes Borg, it ends up established that it's not that difficult to deborg a Borg (actually, I suppose it begins with how easy it was to deborg Picard .) i felt cheated by how that cliffhanger resolved. It should have taken more. But as of now there are at least 3 deborgs in star trek.
The time travelor episode threw me off with Picard because he seemed to argue for knowledge of the future to save lives but this is the only time he ever does so. All other time traveling type episode shows Picard very much against messing with the time line in any way what so ever. Out of all the episodes save for the racist one we all collectivley hate. There is one episode I just skip every time and hate and that is the episode where LaForge becomes this blue alien you can only see under black light. Ugh that was the dumbest sh!t ever. I hated the look of the aliens and hated the acting. I do agree Season 3 was the best. The Survivors is one of my favs. I enjoyed the episode where the crew de-evolve even if it made no sense. It was still interesting seeing the different creatures the crew have become. I like those types of shows or movies though where someone or a team show up some place or somewhere where everything is trashed or destroyed or vacant of all life and you have to figure out just wth took place. I enjoy the battle scenes when starships fight also in ST. I enjoyed DS9 for this reason because it showed huge battles taking place. All in all this was a good video. I would have made 2 seasons per video and just let them sit and collect views but you probably know better than me on this topic.
Lemme guess... Everyone is out to get White Men? It was fine for TOS to tackle the social and political issues of it's day, ditto TNG but if done today it "goes over the line" to point out that, no, MLK talking in Washington didn't end racism, Law Enforcement Officers performing extra-judicial executions in the streets should PROBABLY be a bigger issue for people that claim strong Libertarian ideals? I think maybe people that screech loudly and constantly about "Woke" are choosing to be egregiously wrong because the full implications of a United States that has so much deeply embedded retrograde attitudes in its culture and government makes them extremely emotionally uncomfortable.

I don't think having continuity of consciousness disproves the idea that transporter does not kill the original body. The converse relies on the uniqueness of consciousness which was never explicitly stated. It can be seen as a directive of the transporter systems to ensure only one consciousness "survives", rather than some explicit rule of the universe.
it was funny to me personally how early TNG was so bad and sexist at times that I had admit it was too cringy for me to take. I am usually the person in my friend group who is the most forgiving of stuff like that.

One story line that I'd like to have seen was one where a first contact happens by a pre-warp society accidentally tuning into the subspace communications network.
Surprised this hasn't happened. I mean didn't the Trill develop subspace communication before they developed ftl according to Beta canon?
@Nostripe361 yeah, but it was never shown. there are some prime directive episodes that have hints of it. I think there is one where Data communicates with a little girl on a dying pre-warp planet.
@@mystuff8602 yeah that’s the episode Pen pals. Here planet is basically suffering the apocalypse from the movie 2012 but due to the dilithium in their planet’s crust her radio was able to reach into sub space and be picked up by Data.
Good episode though it does make some of the crew seem like dicks for not wanting to stop an extinction of a sentient species just became they haven’t reach warp yet
SNW started with a sort of lateral take on that idea. It's a great and realistic premise that as a first contact story would be interesting and different plus allow us to see what Starfleet protocols are concerning this "NOW" in a post pen pal continuity. I don't mind the Prime Directive Eps or how that rule is set up... But a civilization capable of communication through the void before it breaks the Warp barrier is interesting as a proposition. In Pen Pals it was happenstance... What happens when it's intentional? What happens when an alien's civilization's version of SETI breaks into a Starfleet subspace channel?

I watched the pilot when it originally aired, hated it, and never watched TNG again (I was born in 78, so I was just a kid.) Years later, as a teen, I got interested in TNG again and ended up watching other episodes and circled back around to the pilot. By then, I was a huge fan and Q remains my favorite alien character from any franchise to this day. I came to the realization that it was a decent episode, just a terrible pilot. Had that one aired AFTER we were hooked, it would have been fine. (I'm a huge ST fan now of course. Even more so than Star Wars which I also love. Sad that both franchises were murdered by JJ Abrams.)
I'm still super hesitant to even start Discovery or Picard, but since Paramount+ was only $4 last week I decided to give lower decks a try and that is some surprisingly quality Trek comedy. Maybe the others won't be so bad, I hope
@@JohnnyTromboner dscovery seasons 1-3 are meh, but after that I couldn't take it anymore. Strange New Worlds is a gem! Picard seasons 1 and 2 are just......atrocious. Season 2 started off well and then went COMPLETLEY off the rails (Q, who seemingly forget all about his son and partner, is suddenly "alone" and DIES. WTF?) Season 3, though....wow. THAT was great! The entire series should have been THAT!

Never realized just how bad TNG really was. I can't think of even one episode I'd want to watch again. What TNG episode would you same is comparable to: City on the Edge of Forever, A Balance of Terror, and the Enterprise Incidence or a number of many other ToS episodes (not to mention Space Seed).
What about the mirror version of q from the mirror universe? I don't think anyone has ever questioned that but obviously I'm only 5 minutes and 57 seconds through the video
I always liked the Ferengi and how they're caricatures of capitalists. I thought they would have made good villains in TNG, but the openly Fascist Romulans ended up being much scarier and more intense, and probably a better match up with the Federation, who strives for peaceful and inclusive diplomatic relations with all of its member planets instead of domination. DS9 really leans into the Ferengi and I think they work better in that setting anyway
To be honest, i wouldn't reallys suggest anyone skip season 1 or especially season 2. yeah they both have their share of bad episodes, but so do the other seasons (particularly 5 and 7), and as someone who really appreciates "the beginnings of things", for me, the bad season 1 episodes are more interesting than the bad season 7 episodes, because you can certainly tell they haven't quite figured everything out the way they would later when the series just kind of coasts along on goodwill from time to time. Farpoint really was a grand event, whatever one can say now about the weak and kind of cobbled together elements of the script. People were still talking about Conspiracy years later. The Battle was the first episode I ever watched (with my older cousins) and as an eight-or-so-year-old who already had vague familiarity with TOS I thought it was pretty much the coolest thing ever. And I really don't mind that Riker, Worf and even Picard haven't really been nailed down as characters yet. Riker in particular is often pretty far away from what he'd be later, and seeing him get all high and mighty and self-righteous about how much better the Federation is than everyone else just cracks me up. Early TNG is so pleased with itself and thinks it's awesome even when it isn't, and to me, there's a real charm to that, which kind of got lost later on when things really settled down. There are other things I enjoy about the early seasons. There was a lot more variety in the music and composers. You got guys like Joesph Stefano from the old Outer Limits show writing episodes. I like Pulaski in the second season. And that second season is in my opinion just as strong as many of the later ones despite featuring Manhunt, Up the Long Ladder and Shades of Grey. I've been rewatching the show with a couple of youngger friends who have never seen TNG before, and while I have been skipping episodes I think are particularly poor (they can always come back to those later), you bet we did most of season 1, and are about halfway through season 2 now. Measure of a Man was of course a real hit, as was Contagion. Unfortunately they already know about the Borg, whose reputation has broken outside of Star Trek itself, to the detriment of both in my opinion, but I'm sure Q Who will also go down well when we get to it later this week.

RLM Picard reviews have brought me here and have brought me to watch some TGN and i like it. Never liked it before, thought it was weird & looked corny but now that im older i get that its the stories that matter and maybe lessons learned. I also remember my moms bf would watch it and i always left the room i thought this is so boring even though i was a star wars kid ya know i liked space stuff but anyways.
Oh was Riva actually deaf or did he just do a good job with his signing? Idk any sign languages (just letters), so Idk if the signs were right, but him taking up more space and using more forceful motions for his signs is how that works. I learned recently deaf people whisper/talk/shout based on their signing space and facial expressions

I really appreciate these videos. I got my girlfriend into Star Trek through the movies and am currently half way through the first season of TOS with her. I was worried she wouldn't wanna watch TNG since so much of its first two seasons are not very good, but with your curated episode list, I think I might be able to get her through it without subjecting her to the worst TNG has to offer. :)

Loved this entire thing, although I think I need to take issue with something. When Wort kills Duras I believe it was less to do with Duras framing Worf’s father and more about Duras killing Kalar, Worf’s mate and the mother to his son Alexander.
Star Trek makes the huge mistake multiple times by having characters go out of character for plot reasons, long before they've even established the roles. In my opinion the first episodes are crucially in laying the groundwork for both characters and the universe overall.
I've been watching tng again lately. Some of the costumes and effects are dated now, but the show still looks amazing close to 40 years later. And the stories are still amazing. It was actually a show I hated as a kid because it was "boring" but I absolutely love it later in life.

I'd skip the first generation. It wasn't really good. It consisted at least 90% of landing on a strange planet. Having a dude jump out in a bad costume killing a guy wearing a red shirt. Kirk saves some alien chick and makes out with her. Rinse and repeat.

I felt and feel that the hugh episode is the first that messes up the Borg. For some reason, even though we thought the show might end with that cliffhanger where Picard goes Borg, it ends up established that it's not that difficult to deborg a Borg (actually, I suppose it begins with how easy it was to deborg Picard .) i felt cheated by how that cliffhanger resolved. It should have taken more. But as of now there are at least 3 deborgs in star trek.
What always has annoyed me is that Picard is French and still even himself pronouces his name wrong... Picar[D] The D is silent!

The time travelor episode threw me off with Picard because he seemed to argue for knowledge of the future to save lives but this is the only time he ever does so. All other time traveling type episode shows Picard very much against messing with the time line in any way what so ever. Out of all the episodes save for the racist one we all collectivley hate. There is one episode I just skip every time and hate and that is the episode where LaForge becomes this blue alien you can only see under black light. Ugh that was the dumbest sh!t ever. I hated the look of the aliens and hated the acting. I do agree Season 3 was the best. The Survivors is one of my favs. I enjoyed the episode where the crew de-evolve even if it made no sense. It was still interesting seeing the different creatures the crew have become. I like those types of shows or movies though where someone or a team show up some place or somewhere where everything is trashed or destroyed or vacant of all life and you have to figure out just wth took place. I enjoy the battle scenes when starships fight also in ST. I enjoyed DS9 for this reason because it showed huge battles taking place. All in all this was a good video. I would have made 2 seasons per video and just let them sit and collect views but you probably know better than me on this topic.

It was fine for TOS to tackle the social and political issues of it's day, ditto TNG but if done today it "goes over the line" to point out that, no, MLK talking in Washington didn't end racism, Law Enforcement Officers performing extra-judicial executions in the streets should PROBABLY be a bigger issue for people that claim strong Libertarian ideals?
I think maybe people that screech loudly and constantly about "Woke" are choosing to be egregiously wrong because the full implications of a United States that has so much deeply embedded retrograde attitudes in its culture and government makes them extremely emotionally uncomfortable.

I don't think having continuity of consciousness disproves the idea that transporter does not kill the original body. The converse relies on the uniqueness of consciousness which was never explicitly stated. It can be seen as a directive of the transporter systems to ensure only one consciousness "survives", rather than some explicit rule of the universe.

it was funny to me personally how early TNG was so bad and sexist at times that I had admit it was too cringy for me to take. I am usually the person in my friend group who is the most forgiving of stuff like that.
