As a matter of fact, in 1912, Japan gave about 6000 young trees of cherry blossoms to US.
The half of them were sent to DC, and the other were to NY.
The cherry blossoms in DC have been much more famous, because they were planted and taken care of by the First Ladies and national authorities.
But the fact seems to be almost forgotten that in NY, too, many trees of cherry blossoms were planted along the Hudson River at the same time, which include the trees in "Sakura Park" and "Riverside Park" and so on.

In NY the planting ceremony was held in front of the General US Grant National Memorial, which was still under construction, a month after the ceremony in DC. Why General Grant?
He had visited Japan on his world tour after retiring the US President, in 1879, stayed two months, welcomed by thousands of people and given his useful advices to the Japanese political leaders, including the Emperor Meiji.
They thanked him heartily for his kindness and never failed to show their respect for him.
It is easy to imagine they would have wanted him to enjoy the Japanese Cherry Blossoms as a token of their gratitude.

this is not unique to Japan, as the tradition originates on the mainland, specifically with China, where the Cherry and plum blossoms are immortalized in poetry and paintings and parks over thousands of years. The trees that ended up surviving in the US were in fact found on short notice by looting them from Korea. The ones you see are Korean trees, stolen by Japanese imperialist colonizers, the same brutal fascist regime that would attack Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.

Interestingly, I enjoy the crowdedness as well as Sakura. It’s like a festival so we expect a lot of people to come out to see the flowers. But this year, after Covid, every single person came out and enjoyed themselves so maybe it was too crowded. Too bad that you couldn’t enjoy Sakura as much as I usually do. I live in the US and just came back to Japan and it is the first time in ten years that I come back in Sakura season so I’m fully enjoying each cherry blossom tree I see even though I missed the peak season.

I wonder what happened to those trees during WW2, when Japan and America were at each other's throats? Were they in danger?
