As a Canadian, I'm thinking a World Junior Championship would suit these Latvian players right now. They're playing an excellent, confident game and deserve whatever rewards come their way. GG to both teams.
I just took a look on the Net and the next available slot for this tourney would unfortunately be all the way in 2029 (meaning the turn of 2028/29). Since these are juniors, by then the team will be completely different and they may even be back in the second tier. God knows. Next year the tourney will take place in the States (Minneapolis and Saint Paul), then it'll be back in Canada as usual (Calgary and Edmonton), and then the 2028 tourney will be held in Finland; no precise location (as in cities) has been decided upon as yet.
To be utterly honest, since these tournaments take place every year, I would not mind if they were to beat us in order for them, the Latvians, to win something. (For us) "There will always be the next year", so to speak. 🙂 But in their case (Latvia), they could then *possibly wait for something similar for another decade.... or even longer. (* - Hopefully not)

Germany on the other hand needed to beat us in regular time and hope we don't beat Finland, because this was Germany's last group game. At that time, I didn't even realize, I even got stupid out of listening to a Latvian commentator. I thought: "what quarters, are you for real??" Now I know they already played all games.

What I liked and what I didn't like about the Latvian national team. Players of the Latvian national team hold the puck and often lose it in very unnecessary and dangerous situations. In moments when it is necessary to play more simply - players start to think of complicated things and situations. The German national team makes a large part of its dangerous attacks or shots not as a result of pressure, but due to mistakes made by Latvian players themselves. Of course, I understand that the Latvian national team is the youngest in the tournament and there four players are only 16 years old, which practically means they are still children, but they are able to fight against Canada, show resistance in the USA and beat Germany. You can see that Mateiko is a player of a completely different level - that's why I'm not surprised that he has already been drafted by the Washington Capitals team - the half has many abilities to be a good center forward - including an impressive height of 197cm. As a Latvian, I am +/- satisfied with what I see in general, but against Finland I would give goalkeeper Feldberg a rest. And the Latvian national team needs to shoot more at the goal and not try to keep the puck at all costs.
Good point. I've followed World Juniors for some 30 years (I'm so old!) and it used to be the '5 top teams' and 'all the rest'. Now we have such skill and energy in the 'bottom teams' it makes every game a delight!

They needed 3 points from this game to possibly make it to the play-offs stage. Now Germany will play in the relegation round against the team that finishes last in group B and the loser will be replaced by Denmark next year.
Latvia has always been a underdog. Yet we prove time and time and again that we can. Our nation might have less then a 2 thousands rinks and a population of 1,5mil but we stay as a hockey nation and we will stick to this. I believe in our boys!!.
Within groupstage, Latvia beat Canada and Germany gave Finland run for their money. They might be outsiders, but in the context of playoffs, the gap between them and the top teams isn't anything insurmountable.

I think it was because Germany had to win the game in regulations to move on in the tournament. An overtime win wouldnt have made a difference
