Bestselling author and popular American architect Gil Schafer returns with the final installment in his trilogy on the rewards of living in the American house.
The work of Gil Schafer-one of the world’s leading experts on contemporary traditional architecture-is beloved for its elegance, charm, and strong sense of history and place. Since his last book, Schafer has become a husband and stepfather, a change that has deepened his understanding of how a house must reflect and support the lives of those who live within its walls. Home at Last is a distillation of what he has learned and how he translates it to his work on houses that are adaptive to the evolution of life, depending upon a family’s needs.
The book includes homes he has designed in the mist-covered Hudson Valley, on a bluff above Lake Champlain, on the windswept shores of Block Island, and on the coast of Maine. Schafer shares the stories of these houses and their owners, exploring the choices made for architecture and interiors, and reemphasizing his guiding principles: how to create classical buildings that “live modern”; how to adapt buildings to different regions and ways of life; the connection to landscape; why fancy can coexist with simple, and traditional with modern.
With original photography by Eric Piasecki, layered with practical takeaways, Home at Last is a tribute to the power of the American house.
I feel like I'm part of your family when I watch your channel. Peace always and thank you.
Mary I have so many things to say about your video.
1 You remind me a little bit of Zsa Zsa Gabor. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone clean out our utility room or under sink cabinets with diamonds gold and bracelets on lol although I’m sure they would hold up to the job.
2 Marie Kondo Has great advice on folding things so small it’s like an envelope. Not saying Anything is wrong with your folding but I’ve learned a lot about how to fold in such a way by watching her videos that what once took up a drawer was condensed into a small little space.
3. Your voice is music to my ears. Now that’s gonna sound weird but you have a way of speaking that my mind goes to music notes. Your words are like notes on a music sheet. Almost like a lullaby. I love listening to your posts.
Home At Last just screams TALENT!
Wonderful choice of books, just beautiful.
I agree. He really understand and loves historic homes. All of these shown were new builds.
Thank you for the push to organize my under the sink cupboard! Oh my! Enjoyed the book review and can’t wait until next week! Thank you Mary!
Thank you- the storage containers really helped me, in both motivation and inspiration. I was also going to use the basket to throw over the monster that may have been hiding beneath that mess! 😄
Such a beautiful book! You had me laughing about the laundry room and your cat's opinion 😂 he was not impressed 😂 I appreciate that you are honest about these little spaces we all have. My laundry room is also one that can start accumulating stuff magically. It always feels great after a good clean and reorganization.
Mary, loved the review. Thank you for being so honest and transparent regarding those spaces we all have. My laundry room is a mess right now also. We have a small pantry in it that we use for overflow from our kitchen pantry. We consistently stack items around in there, especially after a grocery haul. You have inpired me. Thank you. Linda
It's difficult when these spaces are used by only one person, but when several people utilize them, it's almost a daily job to keep up with. Thanks for watching!
Congratulations to your daughter! Great accomplishment 🫶
I love the way he uses colour. It makes his home so welcoming.
I like that he can go with a muted palette or a bright one. He gets it right both ways.
Have always loved Gil's architecture and design. Kudos to you for conquering your little organization monsters!😇
Thanks for that apt description! I just changed the title of the video to "There is a monster in my laundry room"!
What wonderful eye candy !!! You always bring the BEST Mary! I really relate to Gil's style of easy elegance of these fabulous homes. WOW!! I think I will be looking back on this one all week long. Working on the rose garden here in the Golden Isles this week. You inspired me to clean under the sink. Thanks Alot! LOL Bren
I’m giving the book a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
And your jewelry the same.
Congratulations to your daughter, you must be very proud 😊
It’s a good feeling when you accomplish, cleaning and organizing things in your home. thank you for sharing. And I’ll see you next week ❤
beautiful home interiors-a pleasure to see. No cookie cutter approach just a great eye and talent.
Hi Mary. Enjoyed the review..this is an idea for anyone wanting to try this: my husband bought 12" square marble tile for under our kitchen sink and cut the last piece to fit snug. If I sit something down with wet hands or item is damp, it can't hurt the tile and looks so nice always under our sink. Another tip, for the very top of kitchen cabinets, he used plywood and cut to size to place over the gap at the top. He painted each with gloss white so that I can wipe clean of any dust. Also easy if you want to include decor items at the top without using risers. The dry wood on the very top that is around 6" deep is impossible to wipe clean of dust, unless of course, cabinets go all the way up. These two ideas have saved me countless hours of cleaning. Your laundry room was a nice success!! See ya next week ~
P/S ~ a wonderful congrats to your daughter as she embraces her new future. Please keep all your fans posted. 💕
Great suggestions! Can I borrow your husband? 😁
Ohmygoodness I love your 2 tips. I wish my hubs had thought to place tile underneath the kitchen sink when he tiled the kitchen floor. And yes the dust on the very top of the kitchen cabinets is impossible to wipe clean. The painted plywood is genius. I decorate the top of my cabinets and always have to use risers.
@@jerryrobinpendleton5171So glad you liked the tips..it's never too late to use the tile under the kitchen sink even if it is just white tile. I can't tell you how much you will enjoy cleaning dust, if that's possible, off of the top cabinets and no more risers. Another idea is to sprinkle small white lights up on top pushing them back so not to see the cord and lighting up the back part of your decor. We put them up 7 years ago and never turn them off and they are still glowing..so nice.
@@mouriefeeney1903 also love the lighting idea! You have the best ideas! Thanks so much!
We are in the last stages of having our retirement house built. Every house I’ve ever lived in never had enough pantry space, closet space or storage space. This one has it in spades. So I laughed out loud when you decided to clean out your laundry room which I have to say (when tidy) is as elegant as the rest of your house. I’ve done the same thing as you did as far as buying large containers for the many shelves I now have. Mine are all see through so I can see at a glance what is in them. The book review was wonderful, Gil designed home interiors that were warm, comfortable and so inviting. Nothing said “Don’t sit on me, I’m too expensive” They all have a relaxed elegance that’s exquisite.
Don’t feel bad . I’m waiting to have a laundry room to tidy up , I’m still stuck in the basement 😊
Ours was in the basement too. I sacrificed part of the butler's pantry to build the laundry room. It was shockingly not as expensive as I thought it was going to be.
Oh Hon. I would not want anyone to see my laundry room or my walk in closet in my bedroom. You are a brave soul.
Thank you. I was brave, in that I thought there really was a monster underneath that mess!😁
Lovely book Mary. Well done on your organising, such great news for your daughter, cant wait to hear more. Thank you.❤
Thank you, I really did enjoy this book. Gil Schafer is one of a kind.
Love love love your program. Just ordered the book. Thank you 👏👏
Thank you very much!
Thank you for the introduction to this fabulous book. It perfectly suits my taste, albeit not necessarily my budget. Quite enjoyable.
Yes, I’m sure most of us can relate to your laundry area! My sewing and craft area is messy most of the time. The more I try to organize the worse it gets! So I am trying to scale down and donate many things.
Yes- I had a donate pile and it was larger than I thought it would be. I was actually glad to discard some things. It was therapeutic!
You were so brave to show us your mess….we all have it…..you need an attic to store your Christmas stuff…..you have such a beautiful home and the sweetest voice…hugs carolyn from Columbus Georgia
Loved the review. I'm so glad you unveiled your laundry room and under the sink. I am in same shape and you gave me some ideas!! Congratulations for your daughter ❤❤
You dress much better than I for organizing😉 It's a never-ending task to organize my laundry room too. Love your series and the personal peek into your beautiful home! Thank you!!
I thought the very same, but she's also doing a video!
That's why I put a "wink" emoji@@JoanneJaworski
In one of my videos I wore shorts to plant some flowers in mid summer and you would have thought I showed myself in the nude. A couple of the viewers heads blew off. One "gentleman" was so irate I had to block his comments! 🤪
So sorry - how ridiculous and unnecessary! I do not envy you with public comments! Stick with the positive ones, of which I am!!! @@thetartantopiary
Discovered Gil Schafer through his first book on American homes a few years ago, and he is the tops, imo. He does grand mansions to cottages, at ease in any situation.
I enjoyed the book review. Thanks for reminding me that it’s spring cleaning time… I needed that gentle nudge. Enjoy your weekend 😊
The book review was beautiful. Thank you for sharing your laundry room. My guest bedroom is an exercise room, art studio, and toy room for the grandchildren. It's my very messy room. We have limited storage, so it's a problem. Especially when you're a neat freak like I am.
I understand that. Storage and organization is the most common household issue! Until I fully conquer that issue, thank goodness for doors that close! 😁
I’m so excited for Fridays now that I’ve found your channel! This book looks awesome - I love his work and could live in any of his houses. And how exciting about your daughter’s business! Can’t wait to hear more. Will you share the source for your beautiful blue and white bracelet? I think your pretty hands really enhance the end of the review when you are closing the book.
You are sweet. These hands are showing my age for sure, but they have done a lot and I am glad they still are! www.protocolgifts.com/collections/jewelry
Thank you for sharing this wonderful book. Now, about your gorgeous jewelry which always look so beautiful juxtaposed against whatever you are presenting.
I do love jewelry- from costume to estate pieces. Thank you.
Loved the book, live traditional architecture and design, for me personally ultra modern design is clinical and not cozy. Another great book. A definite to add to the collection. Congratulations to your daughter. Until next time take care.
Thank you, and I agree with you. Have a great weekend.
I had to laugh . I am in the process of Spring Cleaning my 12 x 14 inch Linen Closet lol lol Needless to say its small; but this was built in the early 60s and we did not have all the stuff we use today. So in come my formidable organizing skills I was born with; but my education is Architecture & Design so at University one of the first things you learn in both these disiplines is; you got it......Space Planning lol lol Trust me i need all of both skills with this job. Suprisingly, it always comes out OK when I finish but just to do ONE shelf took me almost an hour and a half. NOT kidding On Memorial Day I will do the last two shelves and done for another 6 months So when i saw you tackling this i broke out laughing because i know only too well what it really entails.. The Target near me sells various types of inexpensive Plastic boxes I keep buying and stocking so i always have them on hand and they do come in handy. I have them in a Blackish Brown and White in various sizes. They stack well so easy to store.Take a look if you have a Target near you. Your laundry room looks great again so one more household chore done for another 6 months loi lol Thanks for filming and posting this one, Totally delightful since its annual Spring Cleaning time again..I am buying Gil Schafers new book also as I totally relate to him and if i were not 85 and an Architect,Designer myself I would certainly hire him for myself. Very lovely talented man...With the Trilogy complete I hope he will continue to write more books in future,
I agree, fabulous use of color. Thx for another beautiful video. Great clean-up job too!
Gil Schafer's use of muted to bright colors hit the mark every time! Thanks- I really was afraid there was a monster under all that mess!
I just purchased this book a month ago. I love coffee table books. It has become my new hobby collecting these books. So, when your channel popped up I knew I was going to love it.
“… even Rosco is repulsed by this…” 😂🤣 so sweet of you to share this spot. It gives me hope for my mess. ❤️❤️❤️
Hello Mary! I loved this review as Gil Schafer (if I could afford the luxury) is an architect/designer I would hire in a heartbeat! Gil Schafer along with Eric Ross are two who think exactly my style! Your laundry room is adorable and looks great! Have a good week and hey to Dan! Hugs! :)
Great video as always Mary. LOL…. I completed a re-organization of my cabinet contents a few weeks ago. I got new countertops & this forced me to empty my cabinets. This was a good thing. I organized my items underneath my sink and gave away to charity all the duplicate gadgets &/or dishes I never use for one reason or another. Now my challenge is to keep them organized. Good luck with yours too. 😊
Love your videos! Especially this one... the laundry room and under the sink organization... so true we all have these spaces!
Another great book selection. I too love the traditional style with color, pillows, art and all the things. Your laundry room and kitchen under sink makeover inspired me. I’ve been Spring cleaning and reorganizing this week. I had forgotten about those two areas as usual. So thankful for doors. 😂Congrats to your dear daughter. Wonderful opportunity for her.
Congratulations to your daughter, hope all goes well. It's funny a few weeks ago I did my laundry room and lower kitchen cabinets. Hope to get to that drawer soon. Do far I'm managing to keep things where they belong, but my husband has a hard time finding things. See you next time.
Thank you, Mary! I'm sure I'm not your only subscriber who thinks it would be lovely to have you as a next door neighbor!
Hi Mary, your funny!😂 My laundry room and sink are the same. Also my bathroom vanities. My husband puts stuff under there it always looks like a war went on under there. Looking forward to seeing how your new storage works out.
Thank you for sharing your “nests”. We all have them, but it’s nice to see some inspiration on solving the problem.❤
Another great book review! I have laundry room envy 😅. Hope you are feeling okay Mary. You sound under the weather
I call my mess nuck the harry potter room. Like in the films.under the stairway. 🙈
I watch some days back to back video's. I just love your site. Mary I have a question. Do you have a favorite website to check the bottom of a piece that has markings of chinese on it? Thank you
I am such a organized person and it’s great to see how other people organize. Thank for video…..
Love your videos, would love to see hoe you create the Christmas luminaries
Good Job on wash room and under kitchen sink need you at my home !!! lol
😊
Loved the book and the handbag in pink is just a delight.
Great book! Thanks for sharing it with us.
ДЯКУЄМО ЗА КРАСУ ВАС ДИВИТЬСЯ УКРАЇНА ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations to your daughter!
I’m currently listening to your videos while I do some reorganizing and cleaning in my kitchen. Looking forward to your new book review today!
Happy Spring!! 🌷🪺☘️🐇
That's awesome- thank you. Happy Spring to you as well!
Those necessary organizing tasks! I find myself reorganizing my organizing sometimes! 😂
Love the video a always
It’s my life! If I were wealthy I would do 3 things immediately: hire a full time Gardner, build a butler’s pantry (room) just for my china and have a professional organizer come to my home on a weekly basis!
Hi Mary. What a beautiful book!! I wish I was as brave to use color as I see in so many of the books you show us. It all looks so lovely. I got a chuckle out of you showing your laundry room. I can relate!! You made me feel like I wasn't alone. I am getting moving now to do some organizing. Thank you for the inspiration!!
Have a wonderful week!! 😊
I'm so glad. I was shocked at the motivation I received by getting just a few baskets and storage containers. I hope you have a great week also.
Your vlogs are so calming.
Roscoe is adorable! ❤
Gosh, what a gorgeous book. Such timeless and classic style. ❤️
I agree. All 3 of his books are a delight!
Definitely my style.
What a sing to aspire too.
I would like to have seen more of the book. less advertising
Then buy the book. Mary can’t show each page. She gives a glimpse into the book.
Lovely
Hi Mary ! Wonderful book indeed !! I agree with taking the extra seconds to put something in it right place .. when I go to put a coat over a chair ,I tell my self out loud take 2 seconds to hang it up !! How did you hang your pretty trays on the wall? I have a few of those !! kindred spirits !! have a super weekend and Congratulations to your daughter !! hugs Paula
Thank you. The trays are very light weight and I was able to use the 3M adhesive strips. Some of these will hold up to 5 pounds.
Thank you Mary , I will try the tape. I'm still deciding on which Teddy!!
❤❤❤❤❤
A fabulous video, as always!
Thanks for watching!
🌺..
Keep a step ladder in the laundry so that it isn’t hard to access upper storage easily. This will help keep things off the counter and easily put up in labeled storage. Fingers crossed it works!
Good idea
