I know it's clear that the global economic center is going to shift to the Middle East and Asia and there's no real way to stop it. I just feel that the west doesn't need to decline in order for this to happen. Especially in America with all its economic and industrial potential. It's just being squandered.

We live near Songdo. It's a great place to live, but the development has slowed down due to overall economic downturn. However, the parks, trash system, shops, entertainment areas, etc are as modern as the video says. The food is becoming more international too. Overall it's a welcome reprieve from the sardine-like conditions in Seoul.

what did you expect? it's an american making the video. no matter how unbiased they try to be, they live in america so are hugely influenced by it.
What anti-Chinese propaganda? The only mildly negative thing about China's project was that the expressway system is mostly made of toll roads. The video spent far more time slamming Azerbaijan and Nicaragua. Don't know about Azerbaijan, but I *completely* agree about Nicaragua's canal being an awful, awful thing.
EDIT: Ah, you're talking about the Nicaraguan project. That's less of a criticism against China and more criticism against Nicaragua's government. The Sandinista party is a left-leaning party, which makes that canal project akin to Fidel Castro allowing McDonald's to set up shop in Cuba.

Well said noticed that myself there was not a word about how the dam will be built and absolutely everything about the political background and who accompanied China. An absolute shame I was more interested in seeing future projects than political propaganda
danixdefcon5 the Panama canal is near it's use by date, with the surge in the post panamax container ships who are too big to go through the panama canal it presents the golden opportunity for Nicaragua to be the center of trade in the western hemisphere.

It's sad that America don't make that list. The only American project mentioned in the video is the California high speed rail, and that was only to show how unambitious it is compared to Japan's maglev. I can think of many megaprojects that America needs to build.
Meanwhile, to any megalomaniac kings or businessmen who want to build a hi-tech modern city in your image, we will give you Flint Michigan, do whatever you want with it.
America has very small Mega projects the only one that's pretty good is the California one and there's this one in Texas that is said to decrease the drought
Sigh, all of the countries mentioned were developing nations that are experiencing massive growth as they move from the stone age to the information age. We've already done that.

I don't usually comment on videos, but I think your opinion needs correction. If you think that France or Japan are living, as you say, in the stone age, you might have a problem. Yes, the Azeri project is a bit too much for their economy, and it is probable they won't do it actually. And I don't believe in India's project, also.... But China's Junk project seems realistic, which, by the way, isn't, as you say, in the stone age.
OSHO ITER (and DEMO, which they forgot to mention) is probably the most important of all of them and is being built near Marseilles in southern France, so don't feel too left out (:

I've climbed one of the volcanoes on Lake Nicaragua and that's pretty sad that the beautiful tranquil lake will get bisected into a shipping lane. I'm sure the locals won't be happy about that.

Alex Boyer Not much on the Wikipedia article. Geographically, if it has to happen that's probably the best place for it but I think environmental groups will have something to say first.

TheRobofriend Then again, megacities might by definition not be 'amazing' to live in - the skyline crowded by huge monoliths of banks and corporations that look as if they could be built in any place on earth - everywhere looking the same due to globalisation - streetlife that is replaced by 'malls' and indoor mega centres. It appears we are heading towards a future of less valuable human interaction, more worship of money and then, hiding around the corner, the unimaginably terrible effects of global warming that was produced by all of it.
We certainly live in interesting times, but I think we'll be in quite a bit of strife sooner or later if this is the outlook. People like feeling human, and the environment likes being conserved.

And even with this new technology, these new Amazing Megacities™ (which would be bursting from overpopulation), flying cars, high-speed internet, and more, humans will be killing each other, nations will be at war, etc... Nothing can change the fact that humans are animals and that their primary goal is the continuance or survival of their identity, whether genetic (e.g: animals killing each other over mates) or other (as with ultranationalism).

At least you're born in a time where the economy is good enough to provide sufficient food for even the lazy and laws are enforced efficiently enough to maintain good social order. As for me, I'll have to wait some more until I become 26...

My fiance and I almost vacationed in Dubai.
However; when researching hotels and which area to stay in, we realized that (considering our heritage; Brazil & USA) most likely we would be better off going to Australia or the Caribbean.
The freedom to kiss my fiance without the fear of being incarcerated, whipped or the uncomfortable act of our beheadings was the main factor. But there were several other factors; like the possession/consumption of alcohol, my fiance operating a motor vehicle (which apparently can even include turning on a stereo) female head-scarfs in public and restrictions on public dancing).
We were married almost 8 years ago, so I'm sure things are different now.
Please be careful and plan accordingly so you can fully enjoy your vacation!

Ancient Egypt was a large super power, long before other Greek, Roman, and Persian civilizations sought to invade and take it over.

This is what I like about China: It's an ambitious country and it's not afraid of undertaking colossal endeavors. I'm not Chinese, but for some reason, their tremendous levels of ambition give me goosebumps, and frankly, make me proud to be human again. We need more countries that are willing to take such risks for the sake of moving humanity forward if we are to reinvigorate a sense of purpose and pride within our species. Somewhere throughout the middle of the 20th century, "we" (mainly the West) lost our way and started focusing on celebrities, fleeting pleasures, and vapid entertainment rather than inspiring acts of human bravery and ingenuity. We need a sense of purpose if we are to get out from the moral rut we're in now. At least, that's how I feel.

I want to live in a beautiful, varied, cultured mega/super city. It would be so cool to have the city centre ('The Core') comprised of different areas and city styles - e.g. a section of this core being like Las Vegas and parties/raves down every street, shopping/cultural section of the centre, an area of the centre with mansions and parks, an area of the centre for key industrial functions, and new 'types' etc. I don't know, obviously it's pretty much a fantasy, but it would be so damn cool.
I would say that's like las vegs mix with Dubai mix with los angles
I don't like city life anymore because of the high stress living with crime, violence, congested traffic, increase rents, lack of suitable jobs for mature people and overcrowding transport system. And I don't like noisey parties or crowds either.

Look, I'm only 11, so don't critizise me about this, but future cities will probably never come true until like, 2037? Well, cuz you see, our world is getting very technological. And I feel like we've just ended an era. I'll call it, the Megadream Era. I call it that cuz, it's felt like, a megadream. Anyways, by 2019, we'll probably enter the next era, the Technological Era. We've made like insane cities, impossible breakthroughs and etc. We've felt like we're back in the 1920s, where nothing is impossible, for a while. By 2043, we start to enter the Second Dark Era. I say this because, corruption, politics and war. Our world will enter extreme risks of global warming. Oil, will almost be drained. Overpopulation, starting to absorb entire countries. Revolutions, breaking out like wildfire cuz, fears. And by then, you realize it, it's been almost 100 years after World War II ended, and guess what Hitler said. He said: By 100 years, a new threat, will arrive, and we'll start to enter the next era, the Nightmare Era. Entire countries, devastated. Wars, causing hundreds to panic. Genocide, thousands, dead. This point, humanity now needs to work, because that's the only way to save them, from this crisis..........

Getting to airport fast is amazing, I was in Miami and live in NYC and you can get to the airport in 10 minutes in Miami while it is absolute hell getting there in NYC.
HOWEVER, i think the future is for airports to be away from the cities because it will be possible to build a very fast train from airport to the center of the city. Not now but say 30-40 years from now it will probably be possible to get from JFK to Mid town on a train that runs pretty fast (you can not do it now, you can get there on a train that is slow and runs thru an area where you can get stabbed or mugged).

I spotted something in the documentary that kind of is misleading when you talk about the difference in the cost for the maglev train in Japan and the high speed rail system in California you show that the prices are clearly different but not the exact reasons for the project being so much more expensive. I haven't done any intense research or anything but I do think that the high cost of the maglev project in Japan is because they have a much more mountainous region that they are probably making new tunnels for in order to get their train through to all three of their cities. When I looked up the map for the project for the California high speed rail it seems that they are following already developed land ( like following along highways ) so there wouldn't be much in the way of the environment in their way. They may just be using already laid out tracks which could significantly lower the costs for construction and just putting a new high speed rail car on them. In the case of building a completely new track to show the technology to the US I imagine it could be well worth it to have maglev trains. Thank you if read this btw TDC really love your videos

+The Daily Conversation I just think that trains could play a much bigger role in public transportation and cross state transportation in the US, that's not just subways confined to only the biggest cities. It could become a huge business and create some good jobs with a decent road for it going through the country so I would love to see something like maglev trains start to become popular in the US and help us to move away from cars that aren't needed on the roads for short travel across cities so we can be a bit cleaner in our fuel consumption ( because the world's second worse emitter of greenhouse gasses is still really bad in my eyes) . Its just a dream but maybe the world might like what they see when Japan finishes their chuo shinkansen

Long gone are the days of the massive projects like the Hoover Dam, the Interstate Highway System, and giant urban subways. FAR FROM IT - funds are lacking just to pave the ever-growing number of potholes in your neighborhood streets. AND, if you ARE lucky enough to get Federal dollars for a project, it takes double the anticipated time and triple the budget ! WASHINGTON DC needs an enema !
+Mary A I'm sorry to say this, but in the near future, the USA will no longer have this image of strenght, it's government is bankrupt, it has so much debt and it did nothing but the opposite to help it, taking part in wars and foreign conflicts funding different countries and organizations for its own alliance agenda forgetting about its own internal huge problems. Managing a landscape as vast the united states is HUGE and requires a vast attention and constant funding, funding that was and still is wasted elsewhere.
I'm sorry but the good old'USA has outlived its days, and is ruined by its leaders. Americans will say that they had nothing to do with the decisions of their leaders, but what have they done to change them anyway ?
This video was truly amazing! But I wonder one thing.. Why is no western country, mainly thinking of Europe and North America throwing money into this kind of megaprojects? (Apart from the fusion research that is)
Two reasons;
1) We have much empty space like the middle eastern countries have. They have vast empty deserts, most of the west doesn't, so it would mean building over natural habitats.
2) We don't need to. Most western countries are already developed, therefore don't have a booming population.
3) Most middle eastern countries have a small population, so they don't need to focus spending on health care or similar expenses.
4) Cheap labor law are strict in western countries. Not so much for Eastern countries.
***** Thank you, really wellput answer! I think you're right about everything except your third point. Yes for example Saudi Arabia and United Emirates have small populations but China and India?.. Not so much.. I it's more a question of how much of the countires budget goes into a health care system. And I think many of these countries spend less money on healthcare systems than countries in the west do, counting in percent that is.

1 Look at manufacturing.
2 Look at our corrupt government, they have stolen every penny our citizens have.
3 They have regulated our businesses to the point they can't afford to do it competitively!
4 If our government is left as is we will be blown off the earth by some one!

We don't have that much money to throw at that stuff because we waste it all policing the world, helping other countries, not taking care of ourselves, and overspending on welfare! We have space to spread out people also as Emilo stated below! They have to build these tall, high buildings where we can spread out not up!
+MACK It's like asking, why are no western countries getting more optic fiber? Because to upgrade the infractructure to latest models, you have to tear out the older infrastrucutre.

Nevertheless, in most of the cases, I wonder whether or not those city-revolutions are backed with a serious thoughts about how people would adapt to such radical changes.

I believe there are a lot of things occurring in this world that we do not know about and it is very important for people around the world to know what rich people and rich countries are doing to destroy our world with lots of things. All of these projects that these people are constructing have disadvantages in the future and many people will be the victims of these incidents.
