Dr Rommel, thank you for this very informative and imagery-loaded clarification of good brass playing. I liked particularly the "breathplay" idea of the playing. I do a lot of jazz and I do this now constantly BEFORE I play a passage just breath play it with articulation WHILE I IMAGINE what it sounds like---a great trumprt sound. Then articulate the breathplay as if you are playing with that sound> It works. The change is enormous.
Leon Rapier was going to be my trumpet teacher at Louisville, but he passed away before I went into college. I left high school in 1987 and went to march with the Star of Indiana in 1988. My first year at UofL was in 1990 and my trumpet Professor was Dr. Mike Tunnell. Now my son plays trumpet at UofL 30 years later and his trumpet professor is Dr. Reese Land, who happened to be a student of Dr. Tunnell's as well. Great thing is my son at least gets to learn under the great Dr. Speck just as I did in college.
