Sigh….. I LOVED this band when I was in college at Macalester in the early 80s. They played at First Avenue and there was a weird dance contest held in an above-ground pool which was set up on the dance floor and I hooked up randomly with a friend of a friend of a friend and we entered this dance contest held in the pool and we WON and I got to go on stage with The Suburbs and shake the hand of….. the lead singer I think, sopping wet in my swimsuit…. It was rad. It was rad.
Then I could be in my 20s again and wear really cool clothes and a kind of stylish/French punk haircut. The Suburbs, The Replacements, X - all in fairly small clubs in Madison, WI back in the day.
Minneapolis native. My best friend in high school lived in the house Elinor grew up in on Irving. Quarantine 2020 brought me here. Much love to you my heart, my hometown.
Don't remember the Kato ballroom but I remember the Hurdy Gurdy and Friendlies and the Burgundy House and bands like City Mouse and Ace in the Hole and Claxton Walsh. . . .
Is that where they are from? I heard them in the 80z st a club song music for boys billy was doing dive clubs out there making his start. . i thought these guys were brits
My band mates back then couldn't figure out why I liked, Loved this song... It wasn't Heavy etc., Easy, everything about it. From the twangy Chiming guitars to the pounding bass and cool horns, Really liked the sax solo. And The Lyrics, Timeless...
Well I was walking through the middle of town And I said to myself, "What's going on?" People breaking the law just to make ends meet People breaking their hearts just to stay off the street And written on the wall for everyone to see Was "Love is the law" right there on the street It said Love is the, love is the Love is the, love is the Love is the, love is the law Oh Love love love Love, love is the law Well girls, yeah you're looking alright And boys, you don't look so bad You gotta give it, if you want to get it You gotta give it, if you want to get it Love is the, love is the Love is the, love is the Love is the, love is the law
My dad just told me his old band in college opened for these guys. If any of y'all remember Squirrels from Hell he was the drummer with leather pants apparently 😂
I always liked this band--I saw them every chance I could, up to and including their reunion show at the Basillica in 2003, but in hindsight I think I took them for granted. Now, looking back, it seems to me that these guys were among the very best bands of the entire new-wave movement of the early 1980s. There music really holds up well after all these years.
I don't remember seeing the video on MTV but I do remember hearing the songs on college radio in Atlanta and on the radio while I was in Boston. This and Perfect Communist are really great songs. I never get tired of listening to them.
One of those songs that's just supernaturally great. From that steady drum, to the chiming guitar, nuclear powered horns, the two aggressive sax solos answering each other, the raspy yet energic lead vocals of Chan Poling. Brilliant. The Suburbs' "Love Is the Law," and the one I can't find -- "Superlove" are nothing short of fantastic. Check Poling's new jazzier version of "Love Is the Law," recorded live under The New Standards on RUclips. It too, is surprisingly good.
The The, Talk Talk, Martha & The Muffins, The Stranglers, Thomas Dolby,Missing persons (w/ Zappa veterans as rhythm section) Captain Sensible, Style Council, Ultravox, Peter Murphy,The Police, Joe Jackson, then you had retro w/the Smithereens,/Blasters. 70s had been very eclectic w/FM in it's infancy, then the 80s took the baton & ran with it. Lots of horns, lots of keyboards, anything went. Now, we get anything we want: as long as it's MTV certified Corporate Cool... Peace music fans!
We never even met you- but Bruce- you impacted more lives than you can understand. We LOVED Suburbs concerts more than you can know. We went to them almost as long as you did. Thank you. You gave more fun, happy memories than you can understand. God Bless. We sincerely hope you are being watched over and taken care of. We know you are. Take care- two of your fans. J&P. Rest in peace and may your family come to peace with your passing.
I remember hearing this on the radio a couple of times back in the eighties.... It's a true lost gem! When they made thier debut, I heard this on KFMW 108 Cedar Rapids/ Waterloo remeber the dj said they were from Minneapolis.... must have been those horns that have always been kept some where in my mind for some odd reason......
This band is Spader times Spader on Bass time Spader on drums times Spader on Guiatrs times Spader on Vocals times Spader on Sax + Drugs + Money = Perfection!!!
Well it took a while , but alas, here we are. I've never told this to anyone, even though I voted for another in 2008, I really wanted to vote for Roseanne for president just because. But the right man won.
michael randall I feel ya Michael. Watching that show now... it's still ahead of it's time with it's brutal honesty and ease it has covering serious topics.
This Roseanne episode brought me here too. Love it when Molly pushes Darlene into the crowd and David starts dancing and Darlene just looks at him, haha. GREAT episode.
I love this song! Definitely one of the songs that best describes Minnesota over the past year.. FIRST state in the nation to reject an anti-marriage amendment and then pass marriage equality legislation six months later. Love is the Law in Minnesota!
Do you remember what they said? At the same show. We are at F____ State Fair!!!! Not First Avenue, not the 400, but the F____ State Fair. So suburbs. LOVE THEM for that.
@ReaktorLeak YES! Absolutely, thank you so much....That was bugging the ever loving shit out of me. I used to wear the shit out of that tune. Brilliant and classic! Thanks again!!!!
Proof positive that a humble little city like Minneapolis can rock like LA, New York, or London. Does anyone know the approximate filming location of this video?
I never knew this was the same band that sang, Music For Boys. I always liked this song and that one but never put it together. Now I have to look deeper into this group.
Still sounds fresh to me! Oh the trenchcoat and clove cigarettes days of seeing the Suburbs live and how I miss those not so innocent times😜
These guys were so fun to see in concert. I must have seen them 20 times and love each and every time.
here because before my dad passed, he was a huge fan here in the twin cities! rest easy dad❤️
Has to be one of the most awesome tunes from the 80’s. Long live .... MINNESOTAN MUSICIANS!!!! MINNESOTA ROCKS!!!!!!!!!
The Suburbs and The Replacements are amazing
Sigh….. I LOVED this band when I was in college at Macalester in the early 80s. GREAT song & album. The Suburbs are the best. Although huge here in the Midwest, they never got the attention they deserved elsewhere. RIP Bruce
So glad l grew up in Minneapolis 😊
One of the 80's lost gems!

@@melissahoover1147 They were from Minnesota, roughly at the same time as the Replacements and Husker Du, Prince, The Suicide Commandos, etc.
Saw these guys a few times way back when. The coolest show was down in the park bowl at Minnehaha falls. Those were different times.
My band mates back then couldn't figure out why I liked, Loved this song... It wasn't Heavy etc., Easy, everything about it. From the twangy Chiming guitars to the pounding bass and cool horns, Really liked the sax solo. And The Lyrics, Timeless...

Bruce Allen: naturally cool. You will not be forgotten....
The Basilica show was awesome with the choir!

This video looks like it was aired on MTV's 120 Minutes.
I love this song! Definitely one of the songs that best describes Minnesota over the past year.. FIRST state in the nation to reject an anti-marriage amendment and then pass marriage equality legislation six months later. Love is the Law in Minnesota!

I lived in Blacksburg,VA during the '80s and after this song came out LOVE IS THE LAW graffiti showed up all over town.
This was summers at Chaska Lake
@Quentin242451 me too! It took me years to figure out who sang it.
This was Crowley's favorite song.

I never knew this was the same band that sang, Music For Boys. I always liked this song and that one but never put it together. Now I have to look deeper into this group.
The frontman looks a lot like Judd Nelson as Breakfast Club's Bender in this video!
Where was this filmed, getting a very St Croix River vibe, maybe even Taylor's Falls?
