I made a huge batch of this, put it into Mason jars and then took it to a donation center for Hurricane Harvey relief. Easy, inexpensive way to help out. Thanks so much for the recipe! ❤️
I love Borax! It's the main ingredient in Oxy clean. Washing soda softens the water to help your soap clean better and borax helps whiten and removes odor.
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate a real down to earth person helping us learn better ways to do daily chores in a more healthy way potentially at a savings. Thank you, ma'am for your time & thoughtfulness.
If you can't find washing soda, you can make your own washing soda from baking soda. Simply pour onto baking sheet and bake at 400 F for 30 minutes, or until it stops steaming.
This is what I use, works great in my HE washer and gets clothes nice and clean. I use plain white vinegar for fabric softener as well, and Hydrogen Peroxide for bleaching whites.
Be careful using the vinegar and peroxide. They are very caustic and can ruin your seals and and break down the rubber. Ruined a fairly new front loading washing machine we had.
I have never successfully gotten the powder to dissolve in our well water, so I mix the powder in a 5 gallon bucket with hot water and it forms a gel. That works great for us. I have a tiny (we call it a "Barbie size") portable washing machine so just 1/4 cup of the gel will do a load of laundry in that. It definitely saves money!
I wish I didn't have a HE washer . Hate it ! uses such a small amount of water it just pushes the dirt back into the clothes .Sister had one and got rid of it after the towels smelled . Bought a Speed Queen reg. washer and when she put the towels in it to wash the dirt just rolled out of the towels ! Just a heads up people . Keep your reg. washer even if it needs repaired . I am going back to the reg. washer type . Didn't mean to be tacky but just thought someone might want this info. Blessings , LInda
add a gallon of water to the clothes b4 u start the load. the machine adds water based on weight of the clothes. if u add water it will be heavier and add more water during the wash cycle.
I knew it was you that I’d seen with an easy laundry recipe. The others involve too many ingredients and steps. This is much simpler and cost effective.
People can make their own washing soda, get baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), I get mine at the feed mill 50lb. bag. Put an half inch layer on a cookie sheet and put it in a 400 degree F. oven for one hour. You have washing soda. The recipe that I use is half a cup of washing soda, half a cup of borax, and half a cup of blue dawn dish detergent, dissolve washing soda and borax in four cups of hot water then add dish washing liquid, then add eight more cups of water, and you are done. No soap to grate. You use 1\4 cup per load of laundry and you can use it on HE washing machines.
I have a lot of allergies but this may be perfect for me. No perfumes or chemicals. I do have a high efficiency machine but I am trying this. Thank you.
My ingredients have been sitting around for awhile, but now I'm finally ready to try this. I recently moved to a house that runs on a septic system, and that makes me nervous. However, I think this recipe will be fine as long as I measure it out and use hot water to turn the detergent into a liquid before adding to the machine.
I have made this for a couple years and used it with no issues. Then we moved and had a septic tank. It re hardened in the septic and clogged the filters in the septic..i loved the way it worked and smelled but didn't like the cost of the septic repair..lol
THANK YOU! this is going to be great!! i have heard if you get some plain white vinegar add some fragrance or essential oils to it and shake it really well and add it to the softener compartment it leaves you clothes scented really nice.
TheBIGOliveSoapCo .... I mix about 20-30 drops of essential oil in a gallon of white vinegar, shake it up and use it in place of downy etc. it lasts for months and my clothes smell GREAT. I have also used the white vinegar without essential oil in, my clothes have never smelled like vinegar either way.
Great voice video, I tell you I'm not on a homestead, however I'm frugal again I will say I get it from my grandparents. I've made liquid detergent a big ol bucket. Now what's in the bucket you make is concentrate. The would add the water to my mason jugs. It lasted me well over a year. I gave it away as presents people said it was better then most brands. I've been wanting to try the dry. Thank you for sharing I will be doing this next. Have a wonderful day Hugs from Ohio
Loved your video! I’d love to make you two questions :) First) You said you make a liquid detergent, could you maybe make a video (or just quickly write a response) on how you make that? That would be awesome. Second) I loved the fact that you showed the “basic” recipe so that anyone can add anything they like. Maybe you can tell us what other things you usually like to add to your homemade detergents. You talked about lemon essential oil for de-greasing, but do you have other tips and tricks for further ingredients you can add? Thanks again for a super clear and straight forward video! Have a great day!
I LOVE my dry mix ( with borax ) I actually use a old Maytag wringer washer ;) talk about get your close clean lol beats them to death but they are clean and honestly the wringer gets them so wrung out it doesn't take long to line dry at all
Just made a triple batch of this soap again. I should be set for a long long time. I do add a scent boost by Ramon Hammer as well. 3/4 c- 1 cup per batch. I’m using the full recipe you have written n your notepad.I also se 1 TBSP of vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser to help dissolve the soap.
I have made this, but with Borax. Am trying this as time to make more. And yes, my original recipe works great in a HE machine. This is one less ingredient, meaning machine doesn't get the buildup. Thank you. Will try.
I have been making my own laundry soap for the past two years!!! I LOVE it!! But I will say, I make the liquid, because it lasts us so much longer than the powdered. Also, The way I make it is the exact same measurements... so instead of getting a little powder I can get 5 gallons of the same measurements. But I love that I can save money doing this!
I use homemade soap in cold water all the time. I shake in bottle of water first. My machine does not allow to fill up with water before clothes and with lid open. My sister uses the same 2 T in her high efficiency because this is LOW SUDSING which is what you need for HE.
This sounds great. I love making my own laundry detergent (which definitely helps with a family of 8). I've never seen the Zote flakes. I'll be on the hunt for those now! ;)
Zote is now $8.00 per bar. Walmart does not have it either, very hard to find. The flakes are more expensive than the bar. The Arm and Hammer is expensive too.
Just a tip, Zote flakes can be frugally made at home if you don't mind a little extra work and some time. Take a bar of Zote, grate it with a cheese grater (you can even use the side that will make the widest shavings), place the shavings on a baking sheet or large dish (be sure to label it as soap because it will look like shaved coconut), and let it dry out at room temp for 3 days or so. You'll know it's dry when it easily crumbles in your hands and it will have a crisp sound. Place the flakes in a baggie or mason jar (be sure to clearly label and keep out of children's reach) and that's it!
I have the hardest time grating that zote soap by hand so I tend to buy fels instead. Guess I need to get a good processor for soap making. I have yet to find that pregrated zote locally but would love to try it.
Zote is a softer soap. You can cut the bar into smaller pieces and leave it out overnight to "dry out". This also works if you grate the soap first. If you use a food processor or blender make sure you add 1/2 cup of the washing soda so the soap doesn't stick to the blades. Hope this helps!
I used to make this. Im not sure why I quit. I need to start back. I love your videos. You always make me laugh. I imagine hanging out with you is always fun. 😀
I make batches of the liquid with Borax, but am going to give this recipe a go. Rather than partially filling the washer and having to dissolve this soap, how's 'bout shaking it up with some hot water in, like, a peanut butter jar to pre-dissolve it before adding it to the laundry?
All you need to do is add 1/2 cup of tap water to a coffee cup and put in microwave until warm-hot. Put dry laundry soap in the cup of warm-hot water and stir until liquefied. Add to the washing machine. Problem solved.
We use the zote soap and one cup of borax. Are recipe makes ten gallons. You can also just use the zote soap. We do lots of laundry with five kids in the house. We use to buy the tide laundry soap so you can imagine how much money we save.
great video!! ... this is something I've been thinking about doing for awhile .... I want to find a "recipe" for all natural, ingredients, from my garden.....
Okay so this might seem like a silly question but I gotta ask, do you use that blender for food as well? If so do you find that the soap leaves any sort of smell/taste residue behind after you've cleaned/rinsed it?
This wouldn't be any different than you using dish soap to wash your food processor. Make sure to clean it well after using it for this, like you would if you put food in it, and it will be fine.
Well thank you for your video, after reading all the comments I am worried about my plumbing using certain waxy soaps. Could you tell me what recipe for home laundry soap is the best??
Have you reported an update on this? are you still using the 2 ingredient soap? is there a reason you are trying to avoid borax? have you used this hand washing?
Can you make an update on this? Do you still use it or do you only use it when the “season” calls for it? Like now, my season is recovering from a few OATS procedures and so we need to save EVERYTHING possible
Just a heads up from a woman who just paid $800 to have her sewer pipes snaked out. It was full of waxy soap. (Have used the dry for three years). Make the liquid. Trust me. In the long run it's better! Ugh
Does the white Zote has a lemony smell? I use the pink one and it has kind of lemony smell, which I like it a lot so I am wondering the same thing with the white. Thanks
All of the Zote soap colors (white, blue & pink) have citronella fragrance oil in them. That's probably the lemony smell you're referring to. You may want to use castile bar soap (Kirk's or Dr. Bronner's) as they have a softer scent. Hope this helps!
I need to try this, we are a family of 5 too, I'm doing a lot of laundry with a newborn. Right now I'm buying my laundry soap at sams club. Are those ingredients safe for baby clothe?
MeowKimberry Ki'Ki a commenter above said that it does. She spent $800 cleaning her sewers. However, another viewer commented to add a little citric acid to cut the grease.
crafters anonymous some people bake baking soda to make it into washing soda.. bake at 400 for 40 min to about an hour, stirring it occasionally.. both are different and have different benefits.. best bet do research.. i have been thinking about doing this.. with baby on the way, it really makes me think about making healthy and money saving ways to wash baby clothes as well as pur own..

Brittany Von Rissen So nice of you. Well done
So Blessed, being a Blessing.
Brittany, did you know that most people LOST THEIR HOMES in that hurricane? So how are they going to wash their clothes?
@@rickjames6948 They go to centers where they can wash the clothing they were able to save or donated to them. There were no overnight fixes.
@@Jomama02 What centers, everything was lost. See what I'm saying....... It's all GONE.
I love Borax! It's the main ingredient in Oxy clean. Washing soda softens the water to help your soap clean better and borax helps whiten and removes odor.

I make this too . But as you said the prices I just laughed & laughed...

Do you have an update as to whether or not this detergent works for you? Have you stuck with it or did you incorporate borax at a later time?
I'm hoping she gets back to you on this question.

how much of the oil would you put in the detergent?
