The reason death metal declined is quite simple after 1995 every death metal band sounded like every other death metal band no one was original any more and still aren't to this day, that said I still listen to death metal and enjoy it.
I hear it in many videos and it's wrong: Dan Johnson produced Leprosy, Scott Burns was the sound engineer. IIRC his first full production credit was some of the songs on Slowly We Rot.
Great Floridan Death Metal Bands: Death, Obituary,Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse despite Cannibal coming from Buffulo NY but they recorded many of their albums there with Scott Burns .
He never said that they were death metal, because they aren't; they're a mix of thrash, power and speed. He only said the they were the first band morrison signed that wasn't trad heavy metal.

I never considered Atheist death metal. Their riffs are too thrashy and the vocals aren’t really death metal, plenty of thrash singers have harsher vocals. They’re more technical thrash/jazz fusion
