I am not trying to be ruthless but here is my take: most opioids should be prescribed on a short term basis. While I do not condone the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma, how many of these opioid overdoses were from medications illegally obtained? Physicians who over prescribed should be held accountable, but how many people became addicted to opioids who never received a formal opioid prescription? The accountability of the Sackler family, big pharma, and physicians can only go so far. With cases like this, the true victims hardly ever see a penny owed to them. Maybe I am just jaded.
So if I hire big lawyers and stall the case as much as possible, I can force the authorities to declare me without fault as long as I pay a fat bribe? It would also be smart to give some money to mouthpieces to go on talk shows and insist that the money is needed NOW and we should compromise at any cost.

@@davidtrindle6473no, he said that it’s very difficult to find anything that manages the severe pain some people experience. I’m so be of them and verify. Anything you take that’s strong enough to alleviate the pain, will come with even worse side effects.
No, people actually in chronic pain are required to suffer in America, rather than get any pain relief, because some doctors were irresponsible... When we should be treating people in actual pain.
@@davidtrindle6473 Where does he say that?
The point is that done people were able to manage their medications without issue and were kept from accessing it because of how Purdue pushed the drug on people who didn't need it.
Terminal patients also had trouble getting medication because of how poorly new rules were written and enforced.
I would think the people that prescribe the meds would be held accountable too
DrugAddicts areUpset
Yes they should. Opiates have been known to be wildly, dangerously addictive for all of human civilization and nothing has ever contradicted that. A doctor has the least possible excuse for thinking otherwise because they would not only know that it is addictive, but the exact mechanisms through it causes addiction.
In a number of cases they have been, the difference being doctors have seen the inside of prison cells, the Sackler's have not.
Opiod prescribers were told *repeatedly* that Purdue's painkiller was different, with a near-zero chance of addiction, because it was continuous release (the "Contin" in OxyContin).
@@kkeelty64LOL! If you had a Phil male you knew better than that!

If they get away with being a major factor in causing the opioid crisis, the next "family" will do even worse.
But if they loss everything they had, that would be REAL JUSTICE. Literally destroyed Lives. While they are still enjoying theirs. They knew they had it in the bag when they got the SCOTUS in their pockets. Oh, what a luxury vacation can buy. I wish "he" could go to Prison.
Next family? These people will do it again! they are filing bankruptcy for this company but their only "rebranding" the company under a different name -KNOA PHARMA!
That the justice system stood by and watched this happen instead of nipping it in the bud is the true injustice. THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Then multiply that by the over 30,000 man made chemicals that get into our bodies just breathing the air and drinking the water.
*AS A EUROPEAN* I simply can not conceive that the government has not stepped in and provided the billions needed to sort this hideous problem out
The govt is involved since they approved the drug
Because our government could give a shit less. Most of them are hooked on the same meds and/or getting ridiculous amounts of donations and perks from big pharma.
I guarantee behind the scenes the question is “how are they responsible, addiction is a sickness.”
They won’t say anything about how Purdue Pharma PUSHED these drugs KNOWING how they would effect people and THEY DID IT FOR MONEY.
The government was paid off to let it slide
How about some good old fashioned criminal convictions? prison time??
Congrats scotus on the new vacation packages. I'd imagine having Purdue cater lunches would be too obvious?
All those lawyers circling that huge pile of money.
Clarence Thomas to Purdue Pharma: " You can either pay a $6billion dollar settlement or take me on a $ million vacation so you don't have to."
Sad thing is none of the money is going to the victims and their families. Giving it to governments is only enriching their pockets not the individuals who need it. Just like the tobacco settlements the government just spent that money on pet projects not to actually help anybody. Don't give it law enforcement because they aren't trying to actually help anyone.
they made over 10 billion they want to pay 6 billion .... says it all
They were trying to get out of paying the six billion after they settled for that amount. Bunch of frauds.
The crazier thing is Purdue isn’t the only one doing what they did
Each Sackler and their associates should have to work in addiction center taking care of their victims, then stung up.
Such evil people
Victim’s family wants them to go to jail. It’s not the money. That’s what the rich people that were bought out want it to happen. Including this Ohio’s AG.
Amazing how quickly cases are convened when wanted
Someone who benefits from the settlement made a phone call and now Clarence Thomas has hit pieces coming out about him.
So if I hire big lawyers and stall the case as much as possible, I can force the authorities to declare me without fault as long as I pay a fat bribe?
It would also be smart to give some money to mouthpieces to go on talk shows and insist that the money is needed NOW and we should compromise at any cost.
All those greedy lawyers saw a big pay day, the Sacklers sit on their money and avoid prison and the victims get what little is left. Meantime oxy is still out there killing people and future victims will not be able to sue when the 6 billion runs out. Shame.
I know people that were working as commercial fishermen in Alaska when the Exxon Valdez oil spill happened.... They are still waiting on their settlement checks 40 years later. When it comes to big corporations the only money they ever pay is to politicians and judges to look the way.
Exactly. Haven't we compromised! Think of all the people how have serious pain management needs that no longer have access to anything that works for pain because of the crap these people did. The irresponsibly.willingly, and knowingly worked with doctors and pharmacies to create the crisis that has caused suffering to so many that have never had any addiction at all. Yet their rights are violated and they're forced to suffer in pain every day just to stop a problem their not even part of! Those are the people I feel for the most!
@@logansmall5148 This is a question of criminal justice, not just compensation. If they are allowed to get away clean with this abomination, there will be severe long term consequences.
Jail the Sacklers!!!
guess they forgot to take a certain someone on luxury vacations
It's interesting how all these cases are getting to the supreme Court so quickly 😅
This has been in the hands of the Supreme Court for over a decade
Sounds like the Supreme Court and Justice Thomas is earning another luxurious personal trip for putting their thumb on the scale.
This goes to show that once again the law will protect these monsters the Sackler family
There is the key to why state governments are upset over this falling threw, it stops money going to the states.
Seems like the SCOTUS, being where we divest much of our wisdom as a society, should look at the prospect of whether there would be any money at all for victims after enough time lapses. For example, tie the case up in courts for 20 years ... gives them plenty of time to get creative about how to move around those assets.
yeah no money to the victims but instant cash in the back pockets of the Supreme Court Justices...
Who's fighting for the people that need the pain medicine to help them through each day, because they are in excruciating pain?? Who's fighting for them??
My guess is they will let Purdue off, give the Sacklers full immunity from civil litigation and then accept bribes from them. Thomas has set the bar on this one.
This is another win for America!!
$600 billion sounds about right.
Looks like footing the bill for Justice Thomas’s baller lifestyle is paying off.

To be fair to the FDA, they are horrifically underfunded. They had a fairly brutal budget cut under Reagan with the argument that their approval process was delaying vital drugs getting to patients IIRC. In most of the developed world, there are multiple agencies doing the tasks that fall under the purview of the FDA. Even if you stopped people jumping from the FDA to Food and Pharma companies at the end of their tenure, you'd still have to deal with the issue that they just can't do what they are meant to without a sizeable addition of funds, personnel and possibly legislation
