The first and most affective step towards minimalism is to stop buying new clothes and to appreciate what you already own. Great video Jade!

Just some food for thought: I can't fit into the clothes I wore 6 years ago. And that's okay! If you're like me and have had to buy different clothes as your weight changes, don't feel guilty about not being the most perfect sustainable person ever. Bodies change sometimes and that's okay. And if your old clothes do fit, that's awesome too!

    • @bilingualbasia9519
      @bilingualbasia9519 4 года назад +18

YES! Last winter I put on a lot of weight, mostly because of OCs that were just not suitable for me (I changed them obviously, but the weight stayed the same). Not being able to fit into your clothes was awful and I felt so bad that I had to buy even more clothes, but now I am grateful for that size change, becauce the smaller clothes weren't really my style and I could create an updated, more minimal wardrobe . Plus in my case I was a bit underweight before, so now I feel a lot healthier.

I can’t fit in clothes from like 2 or 3 years ago, almost entirely because I went from being pretty short and large to being 6’2 and a lot thinner over like 2 years, which sounds nice I suppose but it isn’t cos I’ve had to buy new clothes way too often.

Yes, to people who have money. Or minimalists. Regular people want to have a fair amount of clothes, and not wear the same things every other day (bcs that would happen if they spent more money on clothes - they would have a lot less of it because they couldnt afford it). And I'm not talking about 50 dresses, I'm talking about 5. And those 5 are worth less than 1 from "slow fashion".

Honestly the thing about being in the UK is so true 😂 so hard to be minimalistic when you have to be prepared for all weather! And I always keep a basic pair of jeans but rarely wear them because I feel boring in them 😂 but I always convince myself that I need them because they’re an ‘essential’. I’m trying to bring back some of my old items of clothing I’ve forgotten I had at the moment! Rather than buying new ones.

    • @lilian8803

Well minimalism is about only having what you truly need. If you have four seasons you do need clothes for all four seasons. Obviously quite easy to only have 30 pieces of clothing when you live in L.A. and the temperature doesn’t really drop to freezing nor is it raining a lot. So no reason to feel bad about the things you do need

I'm skinny, can't gain much weight but my figure changed so much during puberty and even during the last year (I'm 21 now) that I had to give away several summer dresses this year because I couldn't even pull up the zippers on them anymore. I don't feel bad about my body changing, I'm just sad about those dresses 'cause I really loved wearing them.

0:47 everything you said there also 100% applied to me! I stopped growing when I was like 13 (I was that one tall girl my entire childhood but I'm 1m70 so that's quite average now that I'm an adult) so I still own so many clothes from when I was 13 that still fit and aren't damaged but I'm 20 now and it really doesn't feel like me anymore. I also don't buy a lot of clothes because I have social anxiety and shopping is ACTUALLY my worst nightmare I hate it (which sucks because I do love fashion very much and find it so interesting, and online shopping doesn't interest me either). I've done a lot of growing and reflecting since I turned 20 at the beginning of this year (I know it sounds stupid but it does actually change you) and I know more about who I am, I want that to reflect in my clothes. But I also don't have a specific style, I'm the same as you, I dress like a modern hippy but at the same time, I'm also into dark academia and the moody preppy school girl vibes! (since now we're with 2 people that's a group and we can officially call it a style haha). I've done a little closet clean out and thrown out the things that just aren't wearable anymore or that I just really don't like (mostly clothes I got passed down by family members). I've been trying to go to secondhand stores and I'd like to go to vintage shops but as long as the current situation doesn't calm down I would be much to anxious to go. I think I'm going to start just like you in this video, and say goodbye to the clothes that don't fit who I am anymore. I know it won't be easy because I put so much emotional value in material things, but I'm trying to stop doing that so much.

What I found to be useful to minimize my closet with that many different types of weather (as we have in the Netherlands), is to use layers. So I have this white short sleeved blouse that I can wear by itself in summer when it's hot and during the winter I can wear a blazer over it. The blazer can then dub as a coat in the summer for chilly nights :).

Here's a tip: I think the KonMari method advocates for more of a direct all at once ruthless attack to declutter while some like to take their time and declutter one at a time. A good middlepoint is the Minimalism game, where you start with decluttering one thing, then declutter two the next day, and keep adding until the end of the month. Good luck to all of us trying to minimise and optimise!

I feel like you'd really benefit from trying a seasonal capsule wardrobe. That really helped me minimize, figure out my style, and figure out what I REALLY wore/loved. The way that I did it also helped because if there was something that I didn't put in my capsule that season, I'd just put it in storage (which mentally felt better than giving it away), and then if I didn't want to put it in my capsule the next year, then I'd know that I hadn't worn it in 2 years and it wasn't really a favorite or adding value to my life.

Jade jade learn about Japanese shashiko stitching! An effective and simple way of stitching reinforced seams fast
also research boro fashion, I would love to see you make a piece of your own over time!
Investing in a sewing machine is a good idea if you wanna get to know how to upcycle and repair - some sewing machines work greatly and are rather inexpensive

How is your editing so perfect all the time? ☺️the fact that you mentioned the picture of you wearing those clothes while you were taking about them gave a really nice vibe. Also, I hate to give things away sometimes. I have an emotional attachment to them

Everything that holds value, focus on 1. multi-purpose items 2. Knowledge (books, courses) 3. Travel and adventure 4. Experiences 5. Healthy food Once I realized those are the most important things in life my life changed :)

Sis I saw your story about being catcalled and I was literally heartbroken...there are days when I feel so confident in what I wear and then all it takes is for the opposite sex to make an inappropriate comment about what I wear or make fun about my clothes for me to feel like shit and even then I tried to just laugh it off. Even when they were the ones being a chauvinistic pig. That’s when I realised that I don’t owe anyone my kindness or sympathy. When I do it’s because I genuinely enjoy being in the person’s company.

I totally agree with the color thing. Most grey things I see now I'm like 😣 and move on! I'm not as into bright colors as you but I've added more like navy blue, olive green, burnt orange because they work well with my skin tone

The only thing I don‘t like is the grey ish cardigan with the black frays. I just immediatrly assiocate cheap with it, hahah, and that gives me such home vibes, because some people just dont care what they are wearing here or they dont have enough money to be able to care maybe. But that is just me, love the unique rest ❤️❤️🌸
