man I cant wait to see this.. image and these guys really helped push my love for comics..i remember being young and buying comics ,superman ,spiderman ,batman but then I hit this part in my youth were I wanted something more something different and boom the first issues of image comics arrived ..I remember the flashy art and the glossy pages and violence and blood all the things young boys love..i remember being blown away at the art of spawn and savage dragon wildcats all those comics were so awesome back then ..
I can't wait to get this DVD I am still a Image Fan When they came out I was already thinking about crossovers with marvel comics and then it happen great minds think alike..lol
And then everyone of them @#$%ing QUIT! There are now three of the original founders working at Image now: Todd Macfarlan, Eric Larson, and Rob Liefeld. Actually scratch that, just Macfarlane, and Larsen; Liefeld only came back after he quit DC for the same reasons he left Marvel to form Image Comics. Now all he does is publish his old cancelled books while other artists and writers work on them.
Silvestri never left...Top Cow was and still is there...he has been back to Marvel, but he never left Image..just like Larsen. Todd Mac the only one who never went back to Marvel.
Less than two minutes in I'm kinda questioning this. On screen text told me that even as Marvel were makign millions from movies Jack Kirby was still gettign nothing. Kirby passed away in 1994.First Marvel studios movie came out 14 years later in 2008.
YEah the timeline is a bit messed up, with the doc showing a drawing of the 'Avegngers' movie red carpet. Although I don't think Kirby even got ROYALTIES for ongoing sales of his comics, reprints, TPB/Omnibuses, etc. Or for Marvel using atist's work to sell posters/t-shirts/mugs/etc., which was one of the big things that McFarlane is shown to have had an 'issue' with... The artist would get paid for drawing the book, but then Marvel owned the original work, along with exclusive rights to re-use and sell any additional 'merch' using artists drawings... And then you get guys like Liefeld who are inventing brand new titles with popular new characters, which were then also 100% owned by Marvel, and which the Artist would never receive any 'bonus' compensation besides their regular paycheque.
I'm not sure whether to commend Jim Lee for wanting to maintain total control, and minimize expenses as much as possible in order to pocket ALL profits! Or to consider him an asshole for not being willing to hire staff to assist with the work load, and give talented new artists an opportunity?
You know, Image is great. I love creator-owned books. But I am sick and tired of McFarlane, Liefeld and Lee pretty much demanding that people worship the ground they walk on.
THey seem to have calmed down a bit now at least... I guess having 'new' titles like 'Invincible' or 'Walking Dead' becoming just as, or MORE popular/lucrative that the original founders books might have helped humble the guys a bit...
So who is STILL doing any 'regular' pencilling? McFarlane recently did a second Batman/Spawn crossover, but in a GENIUS move they had Todd handle the story/script writing, and contributing maybe ONE cover variant, along with doing some 'Inking' on 1 or 2 other variant covers? It's always a smart move to have the 'most well known' artist not do any art, and instead be in charge of writing, which is Todd's WEAKEST skill! SMRT!
It's a true marvel hoe Rob Liefeld is able to sit up straight with a chip on his shoulder the size of a bowling ball. ........and and unearned one at that.
Can't wait for this. I didn't grow up in the 60's marvel age, but I was there first hand for the 90's Image launch. This was part of my childhood.
