We are lucky to have both of these players. Milano has proven himself in big moments and will continue to improve. Williams has a high ceiling. Thanks Erik. Go Bills!
You opened my eyes Erik. Maybe I need to give Milano more time to get back to game speed. Problem is we are running out of time. But hopefully by the wild card game he will.
Great breakdown. I think too many are just screaming for Dorian because they remember the splash plays and run stuffs that stand out but miss the bad or forget about it.
What Milano is capable of in coverage is hard to find. If Dorian can ever develop that, he'll be very good. Milano effectively missed 2 years of football. It's gonna take him more time to get his eye in again. I think he can still get there. He doesn't really look slower or anything to me yet but he is 30 years old.
you think Milano plays this week? Just to get some more snaps before the playoffs. or do they rest him. I think he's had plenty of rest let him play this week.
This was fantastic. I’ve been feeling like the physicality Dorian brings is needed for this defense. We’re undersized through the middle of our defense. We miss that presence when teams are running through us. It’s horribly demoralizing. He plays well next to Bernard. It’s a good contrast in styles. Milano doesn’t feel the same as he used to. The missed tackles and the team getting pushed around in the run game is frustrating to watch. I do think Dorian and Bernard play well together and did an excellent job on Kelce and spying Mahomes in the Chiefs game. I felt like Milano had his best game against the Jets so maybe there’s hope. I’m okay if Milano starts if we play Denver. But in a game against the Ravens I think all three (Bernard, Milano and Dorian) will be needed and against a stronger run team Dorian should be leaned on. Obviously playing with the lead would really help our defensive issues. Great breakdown! 👏🏽
It gives me great comfort for you to comment about the use of base personnel in the playoffs. Clearly the Bills have to have an answer for what the Ravens did to us.
Rolling with 3 LBs at times would be nice. Milano, Bernard, and Dorian all are solid in coverage and can blitz. We’ll need some extra muscle if we have to play Baltimore again. They are 80 if Henry goes over 100 yards rushing
@@paulcbaum74we also didn’t have Bernard against the Ravens. And Baylon Spector played 96% of snaps against the Ravens lol. Didn’t have Taron Johnson either
Dude. The reason he “drifted to the middle “ was TO clear out a space for Tyreek The shit is rigged. Every play a script. Do you believe in Santa and he lying blood of Jesus. These guys are criminals always unpredictable for Vegas. “ any given Sunday?” My ass
Nice to see Dorian coming along and Milano getting snaps to evaluate his overall health. Nice to have options. If they can stay healthy, our playoff run could go deep!
This was very detailed and Informative . Feel much better about Milano. Wish somehow Milano and Dorian could be on the field at the same time, but nah. Solid video!
Matt is just starting to get it back together after the injuries son. In the Jets game he put a O lineman in the blue tent and inches from from finishing the career of Rodgers on the blitz. His football IQ is needed in the playoffs. GO BILLS
This film made me realize 3 things I’ve been taking for granted about our defense. Terrell Bernard although undersized is great at fighting through blocks and making the play, and Hamlin has pretty good Ball IQ, and Kalie Elam has what it takes to be a stud
Cool subject for a film segment! I feel like at this point the team defense is better off with Dorian in there over Milano. It's probably like 5% difference overall or something very marginal in nature, but Dorian really gives them an edge with intensity and athleticism. He's come so far between the ears too this year. I think he honestly has the higher floor and currently a higher ceiling than what we're likely to see from Milano this year. McDermott needs to prioritize the overall team equation over any vet loyalty angle with regard to this decision though. He at least needs to be willing to pull Milano if it's clear he's struggling in game.
Really interesting tidbits there regarding the missed tackle rates and the tape of them in coverage...but agreed with your main point about both likely needing to play a huge role in certain packages come playoffs 🤞🏾
So glad you did this break down! I was wondering about this for sure. Not that I think you need to break it down but I was surprised to see Baylon Spector out there as much as Dorian against the Lions. Both guys were out several weeks prior to that game. I'm just curious to see what you think about that. The split went more toward Dorian for the Pats game but Milano also didn't play in that game.
I personally have preferred Dorian over what Milano has shown so far He did come on later in the Jets game. If he gets back to close to Milano of old, then it’s Milano all day but the defense has looked better with Dorian this year so far imo.
I really like both guys, I like Milano more in coverage and love when they bring Dorian in for base 3 linebacker sets, I think Dorian Williams has matured a lot since his rookie year
You may or may not have noticed this but rewatch footage containing Milano and note how close to the ball he is when the whistle blows practically WVERY DOWN. by my account he's within 2 ft of it 99% of the time. He's got more hustle in his little finger than most defenses have in their entire bodies.
a play that worries me is the over pursuit on a shift and the rb leaks out for an easy 1st down. the vikings ran this play to get the 1st down to ice the game against the packers this weekend and i can see teams trying this play on bills. milano seems like he has the experience to sniff out this type of play.
What a problem to have, Bernard, Milano, & Dorian all healthy. We’re usually not that lucky (knock on wood) I also think Bernard’s having a down year, he seems to get lost in coverage.
Against a team like the Ravens, having all 3 linebackers on the field along with 3 corners, one being Johnson, allows you to hide injuries to safeties and play a lot of cover 3, a defense that the Ravens have typically struggled with against the Bills.
Matching up with Baltimore as well as KC, there is no question Milano has to be in the line up. The rate of improvement from his first snaps back and now is actually incredible. Remember, the guy sat for the most part of last year and the vast majority of this year. As well, you can NOT teach instincts. The decision to play Milano over Williams is pretty simple. Missed tackles are about technique and reps. Milano has to be out there.
Matt Milano has a missed tackle rate of over %30 this year, which is horrible, Dorian has a missed tackle rate of 8.1%. Also Milano has NEVER been below %10 in a single year in his career, his career low is 11.3%. And it’s been a problem for Milano’s whole career, when other good LBs have missed tackle rates around 5% and Milano is usually around 15%, that’s bad. And ultimately it’s why I’ve always thought he was extremely overrated. The guy has never been able to do the most fundamental task, and now he’s all time bad at it. And you’re telling me he’s going to be fine? I’m not buying that. Milano does have great instincts but the fact that he’s always missing tackles really negates almost all the good he does. And man making it seem like %12 is actually acceptable or good is crap, it’s not. When guys like Fred Warner, who also misses a lot of tackles is still typically around 10% it shows how bad Milano is as a tackler. Guys like Mosley, Roquan, and Davis are consistently well below %10 you start to see the problem with Milano. And it’s also why Milano is also always injured, because had some of the worst tackling technique you’ll ever see. Milano is the guy you show your players on what NOT to do when tackling. Also, what’s been the Bills biggest problem on defense under McDermott? It’s poor tackling, and constantly whiffing on tackles. It’s why the run defense always sucks every year, and why the Bills always suck on 3rd down. And it’s like McDermott doesn’t even want to attempt to fix it. It’s the number 1 reason the Bills don’t already have a superbowl or 2. And it will most likely be the reason they won’t get one this year. It’s almost impossible to win a superbowl when the team is garbage at the fundamental, most basic part of the game. And don’t take my word for it, go see what guys like Belichick say about how important being able to tackle is. Honestly it’s been, by far, my biggest issue with McDermott as a head coach. He refuses to get the team better at tackling. And it is on him, because it’s most of the team, which means he either isn’t teaching tackling right, or what I suspect, he’s putting pretty much no focus on tackling. And yet every week I have to listen to him talk about how important the fundamentals are, even though he is consistently ignoring the most fundamental part of the game. And until McDermott manages to do what I believe to be impossible, which is win a superbowl with a team that can’t tackle anywhere near well enough, or he actually gets his team to be good at tackling, I’ll continue to have a big issue with him as a coach. Make no mistake him and Babich can fix it, they just don’t seem to care.
Eric always learning some things watching your breakdowns. You are a leading contributor to the national media narrative relating to Milano. Your opinion is well respected as it should be. We all know that his popularity is cause for tiptoeing around his less than ALL-WORLD lowlights. One play in particular, Sunday night at home vs Green Bay disqualifies Matt from ever being mentioned as anything other than serviceable. I know that you know exactly what I am referring to. That play would never happen to a true All-Pro. Also you know that Matt would never be considered a whistle to whistle, high motor guy. His glaring lack of all out hustle most egregiously following missed tackles is completely unacceptable and an insult to his back up and teammates. And us.
Milano is going to be fine. He’s elite. Y’all have no patience. “He’s 30!”. He’s a football 28… y’all forget why Fred Jackson was a stud into his 30s? It’s not about years, it’s about miles.

So they expect Williams to cover Hill on that play? I feel like our defensive coordinator are putting our LB in bad situations also. Our scheme sometimes put just be bad for our players. Even if Williams would’ve dropped back on that play Hill most likely still would’ve caught the ball.
I just don't see why they don't play Dorian on running downs and Glass Milano on passing downs.... I also don't understand why they insist on playing full time nickel with Tarron instead of a LB even against teams like the Ravens or other run heavy teams.... I'm almost sure we're going to lose the AFC championship game against KC because Milano, Bernard, and Tarron are going to be injured from being beat up by physical run first teams like Broncos, Ravens, Steelers, and Chargers....
One of the facts of life in football is that some guys just play way better going forward, to me, it looks like the way Williams is wired is to not give up ground and explode forward. Don't get me wrong, I think he's doing a great job,but he very well may never become good in pass coverage
Great breakdown as always Eric, thanks. Is there a way to quantify the overall havoc Dorian creates by speeding teams up. with this version of Milano the Bills seem pedestrian on defense. With Dorian he increases the overall team speed which I believe contributes to creating a higher rate of turnovers on defense.
@ I agree. Sean needs to give Baltimore a different look if we play them… that’s the only team I’m worried about in the playoffs I think cooper should get targeted more as well
I agree with almost all the video except when you say the bills want you jumping routes I totally disagree. We watched young guys get benched for that if they miss and I don’t see the same Douglas gambling on routes either we seen last year. I believe that’s coaching. I don’t know about everyone else but I be watching these corners sometimes and we know they gonna do a 5 yard route and they don’t jump it. And I believe it’s because if they get beat on a double move they gonna hear about it. I highly doubt gambling is encouraged especially with the young guys.
It’s not gambling, the QBs depth of drop and body language all scream the throw is coming. That’s ok for the players to jump the route. If that wasn’t the case they wouldn’t get any PBUs or INTs. A vision based system isn’t made up, it’s what the players have told me when breaking down film with them. It’s not made up.
don't expect too much from Milano after not playing much in 2 yrs. He definitely not moving as well or decisive in last few games. Most of the time, he misread the play or slow to tackle. I haven't seen him able to shoot the gap to get the running back which he excel before injury
they will not beat the ravens playing nickel. if mcd insists and we lose because of it, he needs to go. coaching is about matchups and acclimating, not ego.
I think the Bernard Dorian combo has a bright future. If anything get a third lb you trust going forward after Milano is gone and sprinkle in some base more. Then add a monster to replace Jones and this may counter some of the issues you are concerned about
as trends in the NFL shift, we should move to a 4-3 given that all the great defenses in the league are. the era of playing 5 DB's and speed are over. the RB and the running game are back. trade taron for a 6'4LB type and draft some size on the DL.
This analysis seems WAY premature. The guy has been back for one game before a groin pull and then one game after. Do this if the Bills go deep into the playoffs and Milano stays healthy
Well, yes and no. I saw this title and jumped at the chance to view it. Because I wanted to know. BUT! But I am not too concerned as of yet of his current failings. I didn't expect him to come out perfect. I just wanted to know if he is reliable or a big fall off in ability. That being said, I would love it if they game Williams more play time against the Pats this week. I saw a lot of indecision in his steps before committing. He need to see more game time. Not sure I want Milano out for Williams to sub in for though.

Not sure I want Milano out for Williams to sub in for though.
...but we're all curious to see how he's performing on the ramp up to the playoffs? No such thing as premature analysis in a week to week league!
no.
