I relish this story selection & your flawless narration with unbridled zeal! De La Mare was a master at setting atmosphere & mood with his rich, vivid, and trancendant imagery. I'm a huge, huge fan- Thank you, Tony
My thanks, Tony, for the story and for your brilliant narration. What a lovely surprise to find this in my feed. Your handling of it was masterful -- I know this one must have been a trial by fire to narrate, and you pull it off without a hitch. All those endless convoluted sentences, filled with obscure five-syllable words, and you tell the tale with great ease and style. I remember when I originally mentioned it to you, I thought "If anyone could pull this off, it'd be Tony." I first read this as a child, and identified with certain aspects of Jimmy's childhood. Later, I liked that he managed to keep a sense of humor, at least intermittently, when he was finally installed in his uncle's house. Yes, I guess it was depressing, for which my apologies. But this is a writer who's been a favorite for a long time, and a story that I'm really pleased to revisit. I look forward to listening again, at bedtime, in the future. Don't be surprised if it doesn't immediately get a lot of views. I suggested A: B: O (same author) to Ian at Horrorbabble a few years back. It didn't get a lot of listens at first, now it's got 28K.
Thank you for choosing this story to narrate. The way Walter de la Mare writes, it seems much like how my mind works (horrors!). Well, in this story at least. I always feel the slightest step behind his words, but very much eager and able to catch up, and find the entire experience very satisfying. Quite a writer indeed. Although I don’t know what my feelings about his work say about me- that’s probably left unanalyzed! Your narration is always spot on- the intonation, the pauses, the pace. Thank you do much for sharing your gift!
I hate to say it but your summary at the end of the story was actually more entertaining than the story, but that's just because you made me chuckle here and there. Great insight since you're a psychiatric nurse about the deeper meaning of this story, that there are some people who are so traumatically abused as a child that they really struggle to get over it and that this is part of the essence of the story. Well done! I always get so much from your analyses of these stories.

He says they have a family resemblance to himself and to each other. They may be the family he didn't know. They said Somes might have been illegitimate, so maybe he is finding out he was, too. Out of the deep family secrets...

I interpret each of the spirits as a reflection of Jimmie himself, pig-creature included. I gather being open to multiple interpretations is a deliberate feature of de la Mare’s work, and in that regard I notice there’s as much concrete language in the final passage to suggest that Jimmie is dead as there is to suggest that he’s alive.
