!!! Correction note: from 5:09 to 8:09, Computer A's IP address' fourth octet in binary should be "00000010". Sorry about the confusion.
    ----------------
Every host on a network has IP address and subnet mask. What is subnet mask? Why does a computer on a network need a subnet mask? What does a subnet mask look like? How does a computer knows whether its target computer is local or remote? What is the secret? In this video, you may find all these questions.
This is my education channel. My topics cover networking, security, programming, and other computer-related materials.
Please subscribe my channel. Many thanks.

Or is it a classless subnet mask ? Please do clarify

For decades I have used the question "What is a subnet mask and why do you need one?" I have been shocked at the answers I have gotten by senior people. They have never learned it as a bit level like Sunny teaches. When you see it at the bit level, everything clicks regardless if IPv4 or IPv6. I like Sunny, he breaks things down into easily digested chunks. When I am building a new team of cyber people, I make them watch Sunny's videos as the man is smart, humble and knows how to communicate. Well done Sunny. Oh, and BTW, your binary mistake is irrelevant to the network number so your instruction is still valid.

I still ask 'what is a subnet mask and why do we need one'... Why do we need subnet mask if we can arrange subnets with vlans and ips? Why do we need to know the network portion and the host portion of the subnet mask if the network portion and the host portion are ALREADY on the ip addresses? Doesn't make sense..

This channel is great for building and strengthening foundational knowledge. Thank you, Sunny, for the wonderful way you present your content!
What specifically is the subnet mask "masking" or covering? Also, how come the comparison is only done for the network part and not for the host part? Is it because checking host is not necessary as a computer can tell whether the target computer is local or not based on the network part?
