I’ve been to that cliff, or one near there. My husband fished off the ledge. and even in crystal clear weather those rocks are so slippery.. I was terrified to go anywhere near the edge. I think I crawled out once just to look down at the huge waves. I know people go down there in the dark. People who live in the area, especially. We saw tents and people fishing when we got there. We were warned to have a local with us. Not just to show us the good spots but to tell us where not to go for our safety. Sad situation.. I feel like there’s more to the story…
This is so sad and scary as ever. The only situation I can think of close to this was our trip to Costa Rica driving up those hills and it was raining. My husband don’t use the toll roads at home so on his phone this wasn’t turned on which lead us on the back roads which were rocky and hilly. We literally could have went over the hill. Down below was beautiful coastline Pacific Ocean water. All I can say is in moments like that you have to slow down and really think clearly.
Not to add insult to injury but the rescue would not have been necessary if they hadn’t been so irresponsible by putting themselves in such a dangerous position. It’s a terrible loss for all concerned, especially the woman and their children.

Sadly, I’ve been in big surf like this and it is a unbelievably tough rescue. Super stud LG’s on surfboards or PWC’s with a rescue gurney is about your best bet and everyone in the water at that time is at risk of not making it. Sad, circumstantial death. Know before you go.
Any kind of boating or swimming after dark, is dangerous. And if you're not a strong swimmer, which obviously neither she was, nor her boyfriend is, don't sit where you can be swept into the surf, particularly after dark! If you're caught in the surf, and are not a strong swimmer, simply float on your back. The water will buoy you up. This is particularly easy in salt water. If she had floated out from shore, then the coast guard could have rescued her. They have pulled people from the water, who have been in there for hours. But their vessels, including helicopters, cannot come extremely close to shore, near rocks, and where it is shallow. When she was yelling for help, they should have yelled to her, "Float on your back! Do not try to swim ashore!". While it is difficult to swim for several hours, it is not difficult to float for several hours. Very sad.
Bra i wouldve went in myself. Swim toward the waves but not straight into um.... diagonally and duck dived the wave. I understand that it was strong but get in there regardless. Go as you can to bypass the break then make your way away from the cliffs. Then body surf your way towards a sandy shore

I almost got dragged away from St. Thomas by the undertow and current. Itmwas about 8 pm after a day c r uise we went on. I made a huge mistake because I love to swim and was impaired...I nearly didnt make it but I am a strong swimmer. I was 50 at the time, maybe 48. My husband and in--laws watched me from the shore for about 1/2 hour. They all KNEW they werent strong enough to rescue me and hoped I would make it. I still hear about the stupid thing I did. (And, no, I am not a parent, but YES, I was an idiot). Be careful ESPECIALLY if you have children. There is a reason the people who live on the islands either don't swim at all-more common than you'd think, but NEVER swim at night. In all of our Caribbean trips, never ever saw locals swim in the dark.
When Dana Ireland was dying on the Red Road, emergency responders drove their ambulance to the beginning of the dirt portion and said, "Oh! We will damage our tires!". So they turned around and added an extra 40 miles to their response time, and still drove over just as much dirt road, but from the other way.
