Yes, not taking care of your teeth (eating too much sweet) can cause caries which will then cause pulpitis.

My pain seems to fall into the category of reversible, but it has been ongoing for over 8 months, so it doesn’t seem to be reversing. It began after a filling (when the tooth never hurt before the filling). Is there anything I can do to help it reverse at this point (like antibiotics) or do I most likely need a root canal?

I had a similar issue recently-pain on anything cold or hot touching the tooth and some pain too when I chewed on food. I was worried the tooth was infected and would eventually have to be pulled. The dentist took an X-Ray and couldn't see any evidence of an abscess, however, the tooth had an old filling in it and that was worn thin so the nerve was being affected. She removed the old filling and replaced it with a new one. The tooth seems to be settling down now and I can eat and drink pretty much as normal again. Anti-biotics will help with symptoms if there is an infection present, but it will only be temporary relief and the infection will return again, worse than before, and the tooth will have to be removed or else a root canal performed. Have your dentist check out that filling-maybe it isn't sealing the tooth properly. Best of luck, tooth ache can be very painful.

@@martinrea8548 Thanks for sharing your story. I had an x-ray at an endodontist yesterday, and it showed abscess forming around the tooth, so I guess I need a root canal. I'm in so much pain now, I can actually hardly wait 2 weeks for the root canal (that I thought I was trying to avoid!). They put me on antibiotics too, so hopefully that will help with some of the pain from the infection in the meantime.

@@mn_ice Hope it all goes well for you. Root canal isn't too bad really. I had one of them too. 👍
