I was looking for a video to watch that would help me fall asleep and figured this looked good for that. However, I really found it funny and interesting! Now I am going to watch others by tomdnyc and I'm not tired anymore.
Well that video just flew by, just like on a broomstick (get it, get it?!!) I know I keep saying this but, top work again Tom, always look forward to your uploads!
Very informative. I had a cousin who grew up in Greenwich Village & the only thing she showed me was the coffee & tea co., where 2 play chess where 2 get hand made leather bags @ the village tannery & where 2 buy shoes I had no idea the village had such secrets, including the burial ground. WOW!
I haven't been to NYC since 2010. I've been binge watching your videos because I want to visit again in the near future. Really awesome stuff! I love spooky.
Loved this! I lived in New York City from 1985 to 2000 and especially remember the Joel Steinberg/Hedda Nausbaum murder of that innocent child as well as the executive who was killed at the pay phone. I will always be a New Yorker at heart and look forward to seeing more of your videos, just subscribed. Love your personality and wit!
This was very interesting and fun. I'm from the East Village and was often in the West Village, too. I worked for NYU Law School in a building Edgar Allen Poe lived in. I haven't heard the story about the women and their families talking loudly from the Women's Prison windows since my Mom told me about it when I was a little boy. Well, now I'm going to watch your East Village Walking Tour and see if you remind me of Jeff Goldblum in that one, too.
You are awesome bro nobody doesn't like you so knowledgeable and funny it's a pleasure to watch your videos you and you and Eric are great team did a marathon with all your videos looking forward forward to your future ones rock on brother God bless peace
When I was in my 20's I had fun running around the Village in the '80s. Then I got gainfully employed and retired to the South East. and I don't miss NY at all. But this bought back some memories.
What a great video Tom, give us more of the grissley goings on in New York, murder houses, kidnapping house, places where people plotted dastardly deeds etc..Cheers from the UK
Love your tours, so good, so much great info, your sense of humour and sound effects make it easy to watch, but are you ever going to tell us about your Law career?😁
Hi Tom. I haven't seen your videos for a while. This is a nice video for Halloween. It's a lot better than those gory slasher they show in the movies these days that leave nothing to the iimagination. I saw some videos of Canatsie who my friend from Brooklyn used to live. He moved to South Florida,. That's now a pretty bad area for drugs and crime.
You mentioned Mae West in this video. Fun fact: I grew up in northern NJ and the house my parents bought was very old. They've lived in that house since 1978. It was over 100 years old when they bought it. There was (and still is) a path that goes from the back of the yard to the center of the yard and just stops. Over the years, they've collected many stories about the house. One of them is that an Italian family lived there and the lady of the house made these MASSIVE dinners on Sundays. She was an amazing cook. Word got around and people who worked on Broadway would come to these dinners and literally sing for their supper. They sang in a gazebo that used to be at the end of that pathway that dead ends in the middle of the yard. We were told Mae West was one of the people who ate in our yard.
Thanks for the history. City sure has come a long way since the crazy olden days. Since the late 90s we tease manhattan for being Disneyland-esque. Things still happen at random, but much of the criminal malaise has disappeared.
In 1987, I use to listen to the Howard Stern show religiously. I was 13. Every day, the case of Little Lisa Steinberg was in the news and Howard & the gang would talk about it. Wasn't she tied to a radiator at one point? Anyway, for 20 years, that's how I kept up with current events by Robin reading the Post & the Daily News over the radio. Baby M and R Budd Dwyer were two other stories from around that time I remember!
A couple spooky things missed: in the early days of Washington Sq, it was a major execution spot with many hangings. The 1971 suicide of photographer Diane Arbus by slashing her wrists in her bathtub in Westbeth artist residence is one of the darker parts of Greenwich Village history.
Awesome. The 1st two were on blocks I grew up on. Bunch of kids that went to my grammar school lived in the building at the end of the block. Really cool vid.
I absolutely love your videos, both the historical content, the quality of the videos and your witty humour!! It feels like I’m attending a very fun but information-packed history classes with you 😂 interesting that you mentioned Kathy Boudin. She was my professor at Columbia University and taught us criminal justice social work. She was an amazing woman, was able to turn her long years in prison into a lifelong learning journey. Did you know that she received her masters degree from the Vermont University while in prison? Later on she did her PhD at Columbia Teachers college and was offered a job as an adjunct professor at Columbia School of Social Work, where she even created a center for justice, supporting research and programs on helping inmates’ transition to life after their discharge. Because of her past, she received a lot of harsh criticism obviously and was even framed as “Columbia’s pet terrorist” and accused of brainwashing students with leftist propaganda. I was her student, and never heard her doing any of that. She was extremely kind to people around her, extremely kind! Very thoughtful and of course a fascinating scholar, writer, poet -all of that! A woman of many talents! But oh well… our society is not always favouring giving people with criminal background a second chance in life, although America, the land of the free, is dong much better in that regards than the part of the world where I’m coming from. Btw, Kathy passed away from cancer a few years back.
Spooky good fun, I think the Village has lots of haunting places… Fun fact I’m pretty sureI had a paranormal experience staying at The Jane Hotel, just a block or so from the phone booth killing! The Chelsea Piers used to be urban ruins that were used as a playground for adventure, danger, romance and lust… So many stories!
The first two stories (at least) are well-known history. I lived a few hundred feet from where each of them took place. As a graduate student in 1976-77, I lived at 35 Fifth Avenue (Fifth Avenue at Tenth Street). During that period, one of Greenwich Village's great bookstores also burned down: Eli Wilentz's 8th Street Bookstore, across the street from Electric Lady Studios.
I remember the Steinburg case. And people in poor neighborhoods think these things don't happen in affluent neighborhoods and if they move to the suburbs everything will be hunky dory. OK Sure!!! People are people
Exactly Donald. People think bad things do not happen in good areas and that is false. Of course, it’s not as bad as poorer locations… You still must have a open mind and watch your surroundings everywhere🤷🏾♂️💯
@@zazaaziella16 -My family has been in that neighborhood since 1983 and there were always gourmet stores like Balducci’s in that neighborhood, and Parsons School of design is literally around the corner.

My deceased roommate remembered when the Women's Prison was standing in the 70s, and when he walked by he'd usually get catcalled.
Yup the women’s house of detention I think on W8th.
No, 6th Ave and about 12th.
You are so entertaining and funny. How do you remember all the information stored in your head? I love your videos.
Tom, this was a fantastic video. Thanks for this
Keep them coming Tom! Awesome approach to the videos!! 🔥🔥🔥
I left NY in 98 and I haven't returned since then. Thanks for bringing back so many memories of NY!
