Did I miss anyone? We researched the heck out of this one over here at the cat cave, but there have been many cats with many impressive jobs over time. Name me some others!
Smaaaaaaall correction, but we only started storing grain about 10-12 thousand years ago, so cats have only been working for *humans* that long. But they were independent small businesscats for long before that :D
Not exactly a working cat, but Oyen the orange cat singlehandedly doubled the ticket purchase of our National Zoo (which was struggling even before the pandemic) when he moved in with the capybara family in their enclosure. He's definitely the most famous and beloved orange cat in Malaysia, people came from all over just to see him.
Capybaras are so sweet. I hope to meet one someday. There are so many pictures of them hanging out with all sorts of other animals. Turtles and cats come to mind, with a bird perched on top.
My cat Burkley has a very important job! I’m autistic and he helps me be more independent. He gives me a reason to wake up, puts me on a daily schedule, and helps me stay on top of keeping my apartment clean for him. He also lays on my chest when I’m overwhelmed and purrs and licks my chin. Then when he can feel my heartbeat go back down, he goes to my stomach or lap. He is my angel!
I have a service cat by accident. By accident meaning she was not trained but a natural. I have a medical condition called sleep apnea (in English) and she nudge me everytime I can't breathe in my sleep and then she started cuddling and her purrs normalized my breathing while asleep. My doc's recommendation was CPAP at night but since mimi the cat was adopted, I don't use it anymore. She is a very smart cat and I hope you discover her channel someday. Much love from the Philippines.
Makes me think of the book, Making Rounds With Oscar, written by a doctor who was sceptical of Oscar's special gift with nursing home residents. Very touching read!!
@@SharonKroes-ki3xe animals are natural healers. They have a magical quality with their fur suits and wet noses. ✨️ ...if that dr had any doubts, he would have gotten two or three cats to feel the heal.
I got to meet Super Stationmaster Tama before she passed away. She was feeble and weak, but when she saw a camera, she made sure to show her good side. She was so sweet and precious and cared for her train customers. I have yet to see her shrine at the station, but I have met Ni-tama, who is not as nice as Tama was, sadly. I'll have to take another trip out there soon. It is very far off the beaten track, but close-by there is a strawberry patch where you can have all-you-can-eat strawberries during strawberry season.
It sounds like she is worthy of her own shrine, and having her life and personality remembered for a long time. One can hope that Ni-tama will become more gentle-hearted as she ages; some cats gain a different outlook over time, as their bones get achy and their appreciation for their human servants grows.
I went to meet Tama a couple of months before she passed away. She was indeed weak at that time. Nitama was beautiful when I saw her. I couldn't tell how nice she was (or not) from how she was housed. It is worth it to visit that area for the trains. In addition to the tamaden, there is a strawberry train and a toy train. And of course the cat-shaped train station. Cats are often part of tourist attractions in Japan. There is another cat station master, a castle cat, and at least one cat island.
Somie people visited Dewey the Library Cat, casually mentioning it was on their way and their daughter wanted to see him. I don't remember the exact numbers but it added like 600 miles to their trip!
You missed Oscar the cat who lived in a nursing home & sensed when people where going to pass away . He would go to their rooms to comfort them, he had a book written about him also 🐈
I adopted a cat who used to be a shoe store cat and greeter. An Egyptian Mau. She loved to greet people and sit in the window of my apartment and meow at every single person who walked by. Whenever I bought new shoes I would show them to her. She loved the boxes and the tissue. She passed in 2014.
I have an Egyptian Mau and adopted her when she was 3 months old. I didn't know she was an Egyptian but kept looking through cat images and found him. Such a wonderful cat, long and thin and loves to jump and gallops when he runs. I let him go out during the day and play. They are very loyal and only hangs with me. I love Jackson and watch his show and continually glean info on my cats!!
I can’t believe Simon the WW2 hero cat didn’t get a nod. You could seriously do a whole episode on military cats from around the world. There’s even one that legit fought for both sides in the same war because his ships he was on kept getting sunk and he would be adopted into whatever military picked him up.
Able Seacat Simon (Dickin Medal, Blue Cross Medal, Naval General Service Medal with Yangtze 1949 clasp) was post WW2, serving from 1947 to 1949. A true hero.
Bob the street cat in London. Big orange kitty, he has a book, RUclips channel, etc. A Street cat Named Bob is a wonderful book about how one cat saved the life of a man who lost his way.
There are two working cats in my neighborhood that I know of. One at the hardware store that for a long time I thought was fake. He is always sound asleep in random spots around the store. I think I've seen him up and walking like twice. The other works at a print shop. Her name is Copy. She runs to greet every single person that comes into the shop. Even when they are closed, if you walk up and tap the window she'll jump up on the window sill and give you head bonks through the glass.
AAAAAH I was so excited to see Tama's story! I'd like to provide my own honorable mention; the ancient cat companions of artisans. Archeologists have discovered countless bits of pottery, brick, and otherwise that has a paw print in it-- something the artisan desided to preserve when the work was fired, allowing modern day people to find the immortalized toe beans of ancient cats. Reminds me very much of the scientist putting his cat's paw print on his study as his co author's signature ❤
@@tethergobrrr One of my all-time favorite painters-deserving-wider-recognition was Suzanne Valadon. So many great paintings of her kitty friends. Tsuguharu Foujita also painted and drew some wonderful cat portraits. Alas, I've never seen the book he did that was all cats. (I don't think it's even been in print in my lifetime.)
I could never consider leaving a kitten in a book drop at our library. It would be the worst feeling to hear it crying and know that other people are going to come drop books on it.
My cats LOVE their jobs…. Heater warmth supervisor, fly wrangler, blanket softness purveyor, seafood examiner, shoelace monitor, cuddle manager and finally… reflex tester (testing my reflexes by dropping down in front of my feet while I’m bringing the groceries in and can’t see in front of me!) Thank you Cuddles, Pumpkin, Smooch & Squish for your tireless efforts.😂
Love it!🤣🥰. Somehow, mine have employed themselves into similar positions! Now my eldest, of 4, Lilly Anna, is in charge of all of us, and I mean in charge! The other day she was ruling from her cat tower upon the other 3 playing with growls of disgust at them "taking a play break". I asked Lilly if she's like her scepter...🤷🏼♀️🤣😻
My college (Niagara College) had a cat that worked in the greenhouse (probably still does). His name was Basil and his official job title was Pest Control Expert. He was on the college payroll.
I would give another honorable mention to Bob the street cat. He was James.Bowen's mental health support animal. He chose.James to be his human companion in 2007 and helped him stay on the straight and narrow. He helped him busking and selling the Big Issue. He made countless people happy, inspired James to write a book about him that was even made into a film. Sadly he passed in 2020 RIP Bob .
My cat approves of the gifts given at Tama's funeral. Cans of tuna are the best gift you can give a cat, according to my Joanna. Also, I would say that cats that provide emotional support for their humans who suffer with mental illness have a very important job.
I have always had cats. My current furchild is sooo empathetic with me when I have bad mental health days. She will let me pet her till I rest and sleep and then she will go to her own bed when iam sleeping. If I cry she's always by my side. They are absolutely in tune with my mental health
I have a working cat Blossom. Her job description, 1. is household overseer. Knowing everything going on in the household 2. Lizard getter. No lizard is safe in our house. She calls me when lizards are on the window screens she’s our alert system for both lizards and grass hoppers. She has a special cry & i immediately know to grab my lizard stick & come to the sun porch.
My kitty was part of a program called PALS Pet access league society, we would visit retirement homes, nursing homes, hospitals. We tended mostly to visit one hospital and the mental health wards with the kids, she along with her subordinate dogs brought a lot of joy to people who really needed it.
❤I had a service cat who lived to about 23-24 years old. She slept on my chest and patted my face in the middle of the night whenever my heart went out of perfect rhythm.
Thank you for this lovely video. It inspired me to share a few other examples. Félicette a stray Parisian cat was launched into space in 1963 as part of the French space program. She survived the launch and landing and her adventure was commemorated on a stamp. Another library cat is Browser, the library cat and mascot for White Settlement, Texas that was hired as a mouser. Cats hace been employed as mousers at the New Hampshire's Mount Washington Observatory for years. The building sits at the top of the highest peak in that area and it attracts rodents because it offers warm, dry, shelter. A cat called Marty was employed in the capacity of Mouser as recently as 2007. The University of East Anglia, here in the UK, has Sylvester the campus cat. He has the job of improving the mental health and well being of staff and students and his merchandise is sold to support a mental health charity. A primary school in Turkey adopted Sleepyhead, a stray cat, as mascot, playmate and companion to the students. Yang, mascot at Hexham Hospital, keeps company with staff and patients, including those being treated for cancer. The list is endless.
I was gonna advocate for Jorts the Cat, but then I remembered that Jorts technically came to fame for being BAD at his job. Thankfully Jorts is better at advocating for labor rights than he is at not falling in a trash can. Though he did get buttered that one time. Also wanna plug for my local campus cat, Big Boy, who comforted stressed out UCSB students for nearly two decades. RIP Big Boy, your chin was soft and nice to scratch. May all senior cats get as much love and support as you did in your final years.
There is a video of Larry seeing off a fox, another one of him ignoring a short lived PM, ignoring resigning PMs, getting policemen to open the door for him and another of him going for a pigeon in front of the press. He removed Palmerston's collar in that fight.
All the cats that provide emotional support for mental health, elderly, and others, they're working cats. I have 4 of various ages, adopted from a local shelter.
That was awesome 😎 You really should do a story on Sailor cats including ‘unsinkable Sam’ 😻 He started with the German Kreigsmarine and ‘jumped ship’ to the Royal Navy and survived several ship sinkings!!
My cat Maru is the official alarm clock and tutor. She would get me up at 4:00am and help me study for my exams. Her official duties included sleeping on my feet to keep them warm, guarding the door so I wouldn’t be interrupted, and dropping a sock on my lap at 8:00am for a study break. Together we passed the FAA A&P exams. She would even stretch out on the floor to show me how aerodynamics work.
I would like to give an honorable mention to all of the working cat community members in Chicago, both feline and human, who are making a valiant effort by working together to control the rat population that has overtaken the city. The humans are providing food and warm outdoor housing (along with neutering) and the cats are working hard to rid the city of all of those rats that have invaded it. Hurrah to all of them for working together at this admirable job!
Yes! I've heard of this recent program and am highly enthusiastic. The science behind is that their mere presence and scent actually inhibits the rat population. It's not just the ones they hunt. Love it, them, and all the people supporting them. I hope they get comfy retirement as needed too. They deserve it. 🥰✨🌟✨
At the game store I frequented in Austin, TX, they had "store cats." I asked where they adopted them from and the manager said that each of them just came in and made themselves at home. They put cat doors on the office doors, so that the cats could escape, eat, or use the litter box, but they also loved to mingle with the customers and could often be found lounging on the carpet or in a chair in the children's section.
My cat was a kitten of a working cat...a warehouse cat at the Mars Confectionery factory in Slough, guarding the sugar. She had her own paycheque and health insurance. What about the Paddington Station cat?
The Paddington station cat was Tiddles, down in the ladies loo. I met him back in the 70s on my travels. Massive big cat that would totally fill his cat bed, and eyes the size of 1 old penny coin.
@@judyofthewoodsRemember him well! He occasionally took a front of cab ride on the tube. It was funny to see the tube hurtling into the station with what seemed to be a cat at the controls. He was a kitten who wandered into the ladies' WC and was adopted by the cleaning staff. Then there was Mr Singh's tortoiseshell..Mr Singh was a manager at Arnos Grove tube station. She would sit on his shoulder.
The University of Florida has a working cat, Chicken Tenders (AKA Tenders)- their job is to make certain the students take a break after eating and inspects the Food Hall at Gator Corner. There are other cats on campus that keeps the rodent population under control along with the campus hawk population
Last year, I lost my sweet, sweet kitty of nearly 14 years (to illness). I miss him dearly. 😭😭 He was a SUPER companion, keen listener and first-rate new box inspector.😂 But, his premier job was BEST biscuit maker this side of Texas!! 😻😻He was a true gem!! Loved him dearly!! ❤😻🙏😺💕🙏
Just a quick mention of Street Cat Bob the 'Big Issue" cat. He lived in London and helped to sell the 'Big Issue magazine on the streets. He became a tourist attraction and was filmed several times for RUclips. There is a book and a film about his life with James Bowen who Bob helped to recover from drug addiction. Sadly Bob was run over and killed in 2020. He was thought to be about 14.
Other important British working cats of note include: George the Stourbridge Junction Station cat. A very popular local celebrity in his own right! Unfortunately, all railway station ticket offices in England are currently under threat of closure and George is likely to lose both his job and home, as are many humans! Catmando (1995-2002; also spelt "Cat Mandu") was a cat who was named "joint leader" of Britain's Official Monster Raving Loony Party (OMRLP) from 1999 to 2002, along with his owner, party chairman Howling Laud Hope.[2] He died in 2002 serving as leader until his death.
There's another popular one you missed, the Chessie System railroad . I've been to the Museum before and met an ancestor of the original Chessie. Most people don't realize the symbol is a silhouette of a cats head resting on a pillow. It's been on plenty of box cars and trains around the country.
I remember learning that story in the late 70s when I was in college. We would cheer when we saw the Chessie system trains passing. A few years ago I went to the railroad museum in Lancaster PA got a t-shirt with Chessie on it. The picture is the shape of the silhouette but the sleeping kitten is illustrated in full color.
We had barn cats when I was little. One female also took up the post of babysitter. Whenever my brother and I were outside alone, she'd stop what she was doing and stick by us until we went in.
We have a working cat, Lil Bears. There were a few years we traveled for work, and he went with us to keep us sane. Now that he no longer travels, he’s our official indoor critter keeper. We’ve had recently hatched chicks escape their cage, and Lil Bears brings them to us, completely unhurt. He’s even delivered them to bed and woke us up to take care of the chickie
There is also Rolf, the University Cat of Warwick University in England. Rolf is the official cat ambassador for the uni. He is one hard working cat!! 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐾🐾
My Mom and stepdad went on vacation in the Thousand Islands and stayed at a hotel that had a working cat whose job was to sleep in a basket on the counter. Maybe he was elderly at that point, or maybe his nap schedule just happened to coincide with Mom's tourist comings and goings. He was a grey cat named Ashley, so she decided she wanted a grey cat named Ashley. (It was a name for boys back then, it didn't become a girl's name until later). When she got back home she went on the search for a grey kitten, found him, and named him Ashley. But one day a friend visited with her little toddler, who tormented the poor kitten. Manners being what they were at that time, you expected your guest to parent their own children, and didn't speak up even when the children destroyed your house or tormented your pets. Mom was just relieved that little Ashley went into hiding and got away from the brat whose mother was lazy and inconsiderate. But at one point Mom didn't see where the toddler went, and she did speak up about that, because he could have gotten outside. They found him and continued the visit for however many hours longer. After they left, she went looking for Ashley, but couldn't find him. Earlier, the brat had gotten a scratch from Ashley and called him, "Bad kitty." So Mom phoned the friend and gently told her to ask her brat what to do with bad kitties. She was going to get the kid to reveal and confess. But the mother freaked out, and finally decided to parent her kid, except she screamed at him demanding to know what he did to the kitten. Of course the brat clammed up. Said he didn't do anything, didn't know anything. The next day, Mom just happened to be changing out seasonal items inti and from the storage room that she only went into rarely. When she opened the bottom drawer, the poor little kitten sprang straight up in the air howling. He was never the same after that. He hated kids with a passion, except my son the Cat Whisperer. My son was barely 3 years old, but he knew how to gain the trust of a cat that had suffered that kind of abuse. They were buds. He got along with my young stepbrother, too. Mom got rid of the litterbox because Ashley preferred to go outside in the bushes, except in winter. She was suspicious of where he was relieving himself, but never smelled or found anything. She just blamed my stepbrother for not flushing the toilet 😂😹 That poor kid! Finally one day Mom heard someone peeing in the bathroom with the door open and light closed, and when she looked in, there was Ashley on the toilet seat squatting. He scratched at the seat, but didn't flush. So after that, whenever she had company, she would make an excuse to check the toilet. The saddest thing, though, was when she moved, Ashley refused to go with her. He disappeared when she was packing. Neighbors kept an eye out, but couldn't catch him if they saw him. He never went back to the old place, either. We'll never know what happened to him. He was a good cat.
There was a cat named Browser who was a Library cat. A councilman fought to have Browser removed from the Library, and he ended up being voted out of office. Browser got to keep his job at the Library. There is a cat that works in a pharmacy, his name is Daniel, and there's a mockumentary type video about him and his coworkers being jealous of Daniel's employee of the month status and preferential treatment. Then there is a Tuxedo Cat named Truffles and she works at an Optometrist Office, she wears glasses and helps kids feel better about having to wear glasses. We named our Tuxedo Cat Truffles, because come on, that's the cutest name ever! She's also super sweet, so the name makes sense.
Will never not love the places that open their door for a cat (or any animal for that matter) to have a 'job' and a loving home. I knew Tama's story, but its nice to see it getting more attention. Dusty made me absolutely laugh. . .I have to wonder what the neighbor's thought and if they just knew when something went missing to go knock on Dusty's door.
There are the healing cats. The ones that help you heal by laying on you and purring. They keep you company and give you a reason to live. Healing cats can take pain away from you. They are amazing!
13:17 This dinosaur stuffed toy looks remarkably like a "miscellaneous object" 🤣🤣🤣 I find in especially funny, that his name is Dusty. When he drags all the towels home, he keeps dusting the street.
Yes and thank you for not leaving out the decimal. Very important and obviously problematic when we get numerals mixed up with dyslexia or cognitive disfunction from being tired or stressed. 😂👍
My dear departed best friend Arthur, had the difficult job of providing me emotional support and companionship. And he did that job brilliantly and effortlessly. I'll never forget or stop missing him.😸👍
Cute stories! I also remember Oscar, the cat in a nursing home, there is a book about him. Also there are lots of cats working in cat cafes! My favorite author is Sneaky Pie Brown. She writes books with her human co-author Rita Mae Brown. I worked in a restaurant inthe kitchen and behind the woodfired oven there was often laying one of the cats supervizing our work! And finally Kassandra, my adorable kitty. Welived near the kindergarten I was working and she often came to visit me and played with the kids
Hercules is an all black medium short hair, super mouser at his Mom's apartment and neighbor's too. Hercules was found on the street at 2 months old by the Santa Fe, NM Animal Control folks. They took him to the town shelter where he was given a full medical exam, bath, food, shots, a little collar and the name Toot Toot. Within a week Hercules was adopted and given his new name by his mom, who studies Egyptology. Now approaching the age of 3 Hercules is loved by all.
I was already aware of Dusty because he was featured on the TV show World's Dumbest on the channel TruTV. He was profiled with dumb criminals, but compared to human criminals, Dusty is kind of a genius.
There's a cat in the UK who did the same thing--usually stealing items from clotheslines. The whole village knew where to check first if something went missing. 😂
We used to have employed cats in my city, Rochester, NY. We have a historic movie theater that has gone through a number of phases. In the previous life of the Cinema people could enjoy a movie where a cat or two might join them for the film. Sadly, the theater changed hands once again over the past year, and now you can watch your movie with dinner rather than cats. Oh well.
I loved hearing these wonderful stories, cats bring such amazing energy into daily life and are also so helpful! The hardware store in the shopping plaza I work at has a store kitty named Rocky; permanent employee of the month, certified patio chair tester and mouser!
Robert the allotments cat was a fantastic ambassador. Robert has a number of books written about him and the othe cats of the allotments in Birmingham England. They saved the allotments from being destroyed!!
I have 2 cats : a professional bug, mouse, and even a bat killer. Professional sunggler, professional alarm clock, and just the best professional cats ever.
Excellent report, Jackson! There was a cat named "Dirt" at the Virginia City and Truckee (Nevada) Railroad who used to take care of vermin, greet visitors, etc. He passed on a couple of years ago, but his legend lives on. Fellow former Boulderite, Dave.
I work at a library that has a library cat, her name is Newbery - she's been there for 5 years and has a similar job description as Dewey. Meanwhile - let me recommend you look up Dirt the Railroad cat.
I read Dewey's book and loved it. Still cried at the end even though I knew Dewey had passed several yrs before. I never knew about Tama before and now I'm intrigued about learning even more about her.
Oh my goodness!! I read Dewey's story, too -- and just bawled and bawled at the end. I LOVED Dewey. I've not heard of Tama before now. Wow!! Sounds like an incredible story.❤😻🙏
There's Fup, the beloved cat who, for years, graced Powell's Technical Books with her presence. After she passed, the staff at Powell's Technical kept her ashes in the store. Powell's Technical Books has since closed but Fup's ashes are now enshrined in the rare book room at Powell's City of Books.
I'd like for my cat Jackie to have an honorable mention in these comments. For 10 years she has been the chief dog overseer, flycatcher and snuggle provider. She also diligently tests every incoming box. So far she's raised 3 dogs and made sure they stay in line. It's hard work, and she does it well. 🐱
There was a momma cat who deserves mention...as best momma. She saved each one of her kittens by entering a burning warehouse many times suffering terrible injuries. I believe a fire department stepped in on some level. Now that sums up the words; True Mother
No doubt by now someone has mentioned that the Guinness brewery in Scotland has a cat on duty. There have been library cats as well. Taylor and Baker have a book about their lives in a Nevada library. 😺
My friend visited Kiev following the fall of the Berlin Wall. She stayed in a rather nice hotel. She came back one night to her room and found a mouse running around. She called the front desk snd they said they’d take care of it right away. Next thing she knows there is a porter knocking on her door. He stood there holding a cat. He handed it to her. She could hardly believe her eyes. No explanation cuz the porter didn’t speak English. So she suddenly had a room mate and no more mice.
Laughing in recognition from my travels. I got so used to cats being around that I completely forgot how odd it can seem to others so I was shocked when a friend visited and screeched "WHAT IS A CAT DOING IN A GROCERY STORE?! when he spotted one napping on a shelf. "Uh, rodent control." 😂
I think this vid and the comments here are absolutely brilliant! I wanted to share that cats really help instil and role model some very important skills and habits. Like getting plenty of good sleep, eating regular meals and snacks, grooming and hygiene, situational awareness, greeting guests, as well as good work+play life balance. They know both how to stay on task and how to take stretch breaks. Things us humans often struggle with. Great vid and hope you make a series of these.
There are several station cats in England, I understand. But Tama is the top. Btw, Tama is said to be the most popular Japanese cat name. It means round jewel or bead, for example a pearl.
I met Hank! He was adopted from Animal Allies in VA -- a wonderful feline rescue group I volunteered for and adopted my kitties from. Hank was magnificent!! He could have been President! Loved this episode so much .
My son's roommate's kitten is in training to be either a Formula 1 driver or announcer. I get photos of the cat staring at the tv screen when a race is on. Only time will tell which one he will be.
Figure you didn't cover these since it's mouse related, but boats/ships have a history of working cats. My favorite is Unsinkable Sam (aka Oscar) who survived at least 3 shipwrecks in WWII! He retired from the navy to then work as a mouser on land for the rest of his days. ❤
To this day, most farms couldn’t function without our farm cats. And why would we want to? Even the farm animals like the barn cats. I have my rescue Persians as pets, but my family has a fiber farm(alpacas, sheep, angora rabbits) and our three barn cats are never to be overlooked.
my cat had a job in an antique store. he went over there every morning, at and lounged on all the furniture showing everyone how incrediable comfortable it was and they escorted him home at 5 pm. he got paid in tuna sandwiches. and well, all the attention he wanted. Of course he was a ginger tabby. Ginger tabbies have got to be the best most friendly ats. Of course I believe that all cats have great personalities if you let them show them off.
Exeter Cathedral has had a cat on the payroll since the early 1300s. They got paid 1 penny per week, but had to wait until 1598 for someone to put a cat flap in!
My cat , Poppy is watching the show with me. Thank you, we really enjoyed the show. Peace and love from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.❤🐈😽🙏🇺🇲
I have a friend's who recently move to your state, one of team members from the Rescue ❤️ now she's trying to find amazing homes from our 🐈, 5 of my rescues Kiddo's they've been adopted ❤️ I'm so happy for my Rescues/fosters Kiddo's because they'll not suffering this terrible 🔥🥵 weather 🌡️ never in their lives againnm 🐈😻🙏🐈⬛
Hearing of the railway cat reminded me of this poem by threat cat lover T S Eliot
SKIMBLESHANKS THE RAILWAY CAT by T.S. Elliot There's a whisper down the line at 11.39 When the Night Mail's ready to depart, Saying "Skimble where is Skimble has he gone to hunt the thimble? We must find him or the train can't start." All the guards and all the porters and the stationmaster's daughters They are searching high and low, Saying "Skimble where is Skimble for unless he's very nimble Then the Night Mail just can't go." At 11.42 then the signal's nearly due And the passengers are frantic to a man-- Then Skimble will appear and he'll saunter to the rear: He's been busy in the luggage van! He gives one flash of his glass-green eyes And the signal goes "All Clear!" And we're off at last for the northern part Of the Northern Hemisphere! You may say that by and large it is Skimble who's in charge Of the Sleeping Car Express. From the driver and the guards to the bagmen playing cards He will supervise them all, more or less. Down the corridor he paces and examines all the faces Of the travellers in the First and the Third; He establishes control by a regular patrol And he'd know at once if anything occurred. He will watch you without winking and he sees what you are thinking And it's certain that he doesn't approve Of hilarity and riot, so the folk are very quiet When Skimble is about and on the move. You can play no pranks with Skimbleshanks! He's a Cat that cannot be ignored; So nothing goes wrong on the Northern Mail When Skimbleshanks is aboard. Oh, it's very pleasant when you have found your little den With your name written up on the door. And the berth is very neat with a newly folded sheet And there's not a speck of dust on the floor. There is every sort of light- you can make it dark or bright; There's a handle that you turn to make a breeze. There's a funny little basin you're supposed to wash your face in And a crank to shut the window if you sneeze. Then the guard looks in politely and will ask you very brightly "Do you like your morning tea weak or strong?" But Skimble's just behind him and was ready to remind him, For Skimble won't let anything go wrong. And when you creep into your cosy berth And pull up the counterpane, You ought to reflect that it's very nice To know that you won't be bothered by mice-- You can leave all that to the Railway Cat, The Cat of the Railway Train! In the watches of the night he is always fresh and bright; Every now and then he has a cup of tea With perhaps a drop of Scotch while he's keeping on the watch, Only stopping here and there to catch a flea. You were fast asleep at Crewe and so you never knew That he was walking up and down the station; You were sleeping all the while he was busy at Carlisle, Where he greets the stationmaster with elation. But you saw him at Dumfries, where he speaks to the police If there's anything they ought to know about: When you get to Gallowgate there you do not have to wait-- For Skimbleshanks will help you to get out! He gives you a wave of his long brown tail Which says: "I'll see you again! You'll meet without fail on the Midnight Mail The Cat of the Railway Train.
I have 12 wonderful working paddock cats - well 1 of them works, the other 11 play all day, knead hay, and keep the pony company. One of my favourite internet working cats is Daniel who featured on the DODO Cat Crazy 'Everyone has that one CoWorker' vid. Thanks for the great video Jackson. Cheers!
My cat Moo, has decided that his job of the house is to be "the boss", to oversee, direct, and inspect everyone and everything! ❤ He thinks, "tough job, but someone has to do it. Also, on a personal note, Jackson Galaxy's wand toy is my favorite toy ever!!!!!" ❤❤
this was such an amazing, wholesome video I loved it! the only working kitty I had heard of was Tama, but I think Dusty the Dishonorable mention cat was my fave bc my Siamese cat jumps into my cupboards to steal towels/ soft things/ sponges + leaves them in the living room lol. Would love a part 2 with some of the mentions I've seen in the comments!
P.S. The advogato cat is named Dr. Leon, and I also found out about Pawfficer Fuzz- the cat assigned by the police in Arkansas to help children with autism.
Great video! I love the variety of jobs. One addendum: NYC’s Hamlet VIII was adopted from Bideawee. He has an eartip because he was rescued during a TNR project; he turned out to be socialized. He is quite a gentleman. ❤
Did I miss anyone? We researched the heck out of this one over here at the cat cave, but there have been many cats with many impressive jobs over time. Name me some others!
How about fisherman?😂
Aw I missed the live! Somehow we managed to sleep in until almost noon! Idk how when the kitties usually wake me up demanding their breakfast 😂😂😂
felicette The space cat
How about Jean and Jorts? They are working cats.
That’s a hard working cat if he single-handedly doubled ticket prices thereby generating revenue for the zoo
@shazzz2909 not only that, 95% of the weekend visitors came just to see Oyen! You can google "zoo negara oyen double revenue" to read about it
@Meeker128-Amy Oyen really adores them too! Most videos of him see him rubbing the capys and sunbathing with them
@@shazzz2909hope he got a kick back and a wage rise… and some salmon 👍😝
My cat Burkley has a very important job! I’m autistic and he helps me be more independent. He gives me a reason to wake up, puts me on a daily schedule, and helps me stay on top of keeping my apartment clean for him. He also lays on my chest when I’m overwhelmed and purrs and licks my chin. Then when he can feel my heartbeat go back down, he goes to my stomach or lap. He is my angel!
Definitely an important job! 🤗
🥺 Such a good cat
Sweet baby. You're very lucky!❤
What great kitty!
Give Barkley a good belly rub and back scratch for me. So glad you two have each other.
Her purr probably tricks your brain into breathing properly :3
Our nurse Simon passed a year ago. He was all white (his uniform 😆) and diligently attended to anyone sick. He was the best❣️
RIP Simon. 😘 We've got a healing cat. He just knows when someone isn't feeling well and lies next to them constantly and purrs.

Enjoy your medic cat, sounds like an amazing feline❣️
Tama, what a beautiful girl❤😊
What a wonderful retirement you provided. 🥹 I'm glad you and your neighbors got to enjoy her charm and grace . Great story !
Nice story 💕🐾🐾💕
I have an Egyptian Mau and adopted her when she was 3 months old. I didn't know she was an Egyptian but kept looking through cat images and found him. Such a wonderful cat, long and thin and loves to jump and gallops when he runs. I let him go out during the day and play. They are very loyal and only hangs with me.
I love Jackson and watch his show and continually glean info on my cats!!
@paulettecalli9684 Egyptian Mau cats are the best. So smart too! And they love to talk.
That was a charming story. I’m so glad she enjoyed your neighbors and shoes and you enjoyed her. I’m going to Google images of Egyptian Maus now.
I can’t believe Simon the WW2 hero cat didn’t get a nod. You could seriously do a whole episode on military cats from around the world. There’s even one that legit fought for both sides in the same war because his ships he was on kept getting sunk and he would be adopted into whatever military picked him up.
Unsinkable Sam!
Able SeaCat Simon! One of the heroes of the Yangtze Incident aboard the HMS Amethyst!!!!
Love to hear that. Im not gonna google it-ill wait for Jackson
Unsinkable Sam is great!!
Able Seacat Simon (Dickin Medal, Blue Cross Medal, Naval General Service Medal with Yangtze 1949 clasp) was post WW2, serving from 1947 to 1949. A true hero.
Oscar the cat worked in a nursing home and he'd curl up with people who people were going to pass.
There was a book written about Oscar.
Bob the street cat in London. Big orange kitty, he has a book, RUclips channel, etc. A Street cat Named Bob is a wonderful book about how one cat saved the life of a man who lost his way.
A street cat named Bob is wonderful. Definitely saved the guys life.
Loved story about Bob, definitely very special cat!
Saw a documentary about Bob and his human. Really worth watching.
One of my favorite stories. I saw the movie and loved it.
I just read about him. Bob died after getting hit by a car and his owner is now homeless again because of the cost of living crisis.
Good addition. There are also the countless unsigned models and muses who worked with artist’s through history.
Maybe it fell in by accident
@@LiusilaI saw a story about a kitten that was stuck in an ATM machine 😅
My cats LOVE their jobs…. Heater warmth supervisor, fly wrangler, blanket softness purveyor, seafood examiner, shoelace monitor, cuddle manager and finally… reflex tester (testing my reflexes by dropping down in front of my feet while I’m bringing the groceries in and can’t see in front of me!) Thank you Cuddles, Pumpkin, Smooch & Squish for your tireless efforts.😂
Fly wrangler 😭
I love that... shoelace monitor!! Gotta love those cats!! 😅❤😻😺💕🙏
Squish 😂
@@kqusa lol, that's too funny. My youngest one, Squish, just jumps on anyone's head if they don't want to play 😂
Definitely a case where they saved each other’s lives.
One of the branches of the Brazilian Bar council had a “advogato” (“pawrrister”) called Leon. After his passing they adopted another one. 😊
I remember that story--he was adorable with his little badge. So sad when he passed.
I hope there's a special place in Hell for anyone involved in launching a cat (or any other animal) into space 😢😡
'Testing antique furniture for napping quality.'
That's a dope job description!
Honorable mention to Unsinkable Sam, the ship cat who survived the sinking of *3* ships.
😮❤
The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia! Cats have been running the place for almost 300 years making sure that art doesn't turn into rat food.
An inner city police station here in LA did the same thing. Just their presence and scent keeps the rats away. I wonder if this works in Turkey also?

Dusty was a local story where I live. He passed away March of 2023, a week before his 17th birthday. RIP Dusty. He made us smile.

Yessss I love Tama I wanted to punch the air when her name came up. The Eternal Stationmaster is her title. FDC Willard also makes me laugh.
My cat Mindy helps me out with my job as an over the road flatbed truck driver. She is America's prettiest trucking cat.
I met Hank! He was adopted from Animal Allies in VA -- a wonderful feline rescue group I volunteered for and adopted my kitties from. Hank was magnificent!! He could have been President! Loved this episode so much .
Hamlet VIII gets THREE meals a day?! What a king! I’ve always fed my pets only twice a day. What a lucky boy!
My son's roommate's kitten is in training to be either a Formula 1 driver or announcer. I get photos of the cat staring at the tv screen when a race is on. Only time will tell which one he will be.
Longwood gardens in Pennsylvania has several cats providing natural pest control. Popular with visitors.
I read the Dewey book when I was in the psych ward. His story drove me to tears, but it was so good.
Similar to Stubbs, Sweet Tart was elected mayor of Omena, MI.
But, my favorite is the cat burglar. Absolutely adorable.
SKIMBLESHANKS
THE RAILWAY CAT
by
T.S. Elliot
There's a whisper down the line at 11.39
When the Night Mail's ready to depart,
Saying "Skimble where is Skimble
has he gone to hunt the thimble?
We must find him or the train can't start."
All the guards and all the porters
and the stationmaster's daughters
They are searching high and low,
Saying "Skimble where is Skimble
for unless he's very nimble
Then the Night Mail just can't go."
At 11.42 then the signal's nearly due
And the passengers are frantic to a man--
Then Skimble will appear and he'll saunter to the rear:
He's been busy in the luggage van!
He gives one flash of his glass-green eyes
And the signal goes "All Clear!"
And we're off at last for the northern part
Of the Northern Hemisphere!
You may say that by and large
it is Skimble who's in charge
Of the Sleeping Car Express.
From the driver and the guards
to the bagmen playing cards
He will supervise them all, more or less.
Down the corridor he paces
and examines all the faces
Of the travellers in the First and the Third;
He establishes control by a regular patrol
And he'd know at once if anything occurred.
He will watch you without winking
and he sees what you are thinking
And it's certain that he doesn't approve
Of hilarity and riot, so the folk are very quiet
When Skimble is about and on the move.
You can play no pranks with Skimbleshanks!
He's a Cat that cannot be ignored;
So nothing goes wrong on the Northern Mail
When Skimbleshanks is aboard.
Oh, it's very pleasant when
you have found your little den
With your name written up on the door.
And the berth is very neat
with a newly folded sheet
And there's not a speck of dust on the floor.
There is every sort of light-
you can make it dark or bright;
There's a handle that you turn to make a breeze.
There's a funny little basin
you're supposed to wash your face in
And a crank to shut the window if you sneeze.
Then the guard looks in politely
and will ask you very brightly
"Do you like your morning tea weak or strong?"
But Skimble's just behind him
and was ready to remind him,
For Skimble won't let anything go wrong.
And when you creep into your cosy berth
And pull up the counterpane,
You ought to reflect that it's very nice
To know that you won't be bothered by mice--
You can leave all that to the Railway Cat,
The Cat of the Railway Train!
In the watches of the night
he is always fresh and bright;
Every now and then he has a cup of tea
With perhaps a drop of Scotch
while he's keeping on the watch,
Only stopping here and there to catch a flea.
You were fast asleep at Crewe
and so you never knew
That he was walking up and down the station;
You were sleeping all the while
he was busy at Carlisle,
Where he greets the stationmaster with elation.
But you saw him at Dumfries,
where he speaks to the police
If there's anything they ought to know about:
When you get to Gallowgate
there you do not have to wait--
For Skimbleshanks will help you to get out!
He gives you a wave of his long brown tail
Which says: "I'll see you again!
You'll meet without fail on the Midnight Mail
The Cat of the Railway Train.
❤
I remember seeing that Tama Google doodle and not understanding what it was for. Now, it makes sense, and the reason is sweeter than I expected. ❤
Cheers!
Great list, thanks for including Smudge (one of my favourite Scottish cats!)
Smudge is a revolutionary hero
My cat Moo, has decided that his job of the house is to be "the boss", to oversee, direct, and inspect everyone and everything! ❤ He thinks, "tough job, but someone has to do it. Also, on a personal note, Jackson Galaxy's wand toy is my favorite toy ever!!!!!" ❤❤
Our Captain ChiChi greets our clients every morning. At night, he catches roaches and leave them by the doormats.
this was such an amazing, wholesome video I loved it! the only working kitty I had heard of was Tama, but I think Dusty the Dishonorable mention cat was my fave bc my Siamese cat jumps into my cupboards to steal towels/ soft things/ sponges + leaves them in the living room lol. Would love a part 2 with some of the mentions I've seen in the comments!
Chester's pawprint signature makes me indescribably happy. =^w^=
P.S. The advogato cat is named Dr. Leon, and I also found out about Pawfficer Fuzz- the cat assigned by the police in Arkansas to help children with autism.
My Houdini is a working cat! He hunts the spiders & other bugs in the house, he shows no mercy! 🤣
Great video! I love the variety of jobs. One addendum: NYC’s Hamlet VIII was adopted from Bideawee. He has an eartip because he was rescued during a TNR project; he turned out to be socialized. He is quite a gentleman. ❤
I used to love feeding Stubbs treats. He always had to drink his water out of a goblet and not a bowl. He was such a sweetie.
Dusty's just trying to redistribute the wealth! We love comrade Dusty
There was a cat who used to live in well used Victorian public toilets near the beach, in Brighton, England, who lived to be very old for a cat.
