Top tip for drilling straight holes: use an over size washer on the drill bit, it spins as you start to drill, if it moves towards the work piece you are too high, towards the drill you are too low, keep it in the middle and you are level, and now you just concentrate on the left or right level.
From what I know of my brothers cows it won't take them long to figure out the bump mechanism. They already know to nudge the gates to see if they haven't been chained and either push through or bounce it off the post and swing the gate open. Happy cow days.
I like the irony of 1st step is throwing the instruction out, then calling the manufaturer. :) I too have had to dig deap into a bin for the instructions, whilst leaving my pride in said bin. Neat gate, I've seen these years ago, but nevedr knew how the delayed close could work. Stupid simple once setup.
Bump gates have been used in the Texas sheep country for many years. The gates I have seen are much heavier built. The pivot pipe is usually 6-8 inch diameter. Many of the ranches run cattle as well. I have never heard of cattle going through them, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened
Unlucky if a frisky animal gives it a solid push though. I think this product solves a problem I didn't know I had. It's good to see new products though.
I was always trying to think up self opening gates fencing as a lad. Never thought of this type though, would have worked well for sheep maybe but not cattle surely. Love the idea.
Well done installing that gate. It cannot have been easy. Thank you for showcasing yet another innovation - very interesting and, yes, just like a bought one! 😂 Nothing beats a grate for well-travelled roads and lanes, in my opinion, but of course, a much more expensive fix.
Another great video from you Tim, showcasing another potential tool for farms. But i have to chip in and say Bump gates arent new to the market, we had one on my childhood property over 30 years ago! Warning!!! You can have issues with cattle using the bumpers as head scratchers!!!!!
This was installed in a cattle paddock. We will see. We left the catch posts higher to avoid injury for stock and them getting lost in long grass and damaged by slashers etc. The gate requires very specific angles to work. If the posts can be thrown out of alignment then this would cause problems. The gate also needs to be offset from the corner by about a foot to allow the gate to travel 110 degrees to the catch post. Advantages include no batteries, no wires and no switches to break.
Far better than undoing gate and pushing it open fast with the brumby Ute while racing the 4 sheep who think they're dogs and just want to play silly buggers dancing around the vehicle :D Although the bump part looks perfect for rubbing that itchy spot between horns, especially for goats, I'd love to test how that goes.
Had one of these for 15 years. Great idea most of the time. Main problem was the ladies hitting it way too hard and bending everything. If you smash into them, they bounce off the catch hook and slam into the car. That was somehow always my fault. Also, seasonally, the ground moves and throws the alignment out too. Horse floats and trailers can catch as it closes and tear the whole thing out of alignment. NO ONE READS THE "IF IN DOUBT OPEN BY HAND " sign. First thing to break is the locking pin at the hole drilled through it. Make some spares first. The pivot points on the "bump" arm are weak and need reinforcement from time to time also.
A lot of work just so you don't have to get out of your car. Checked out the system & for the exorbanent cost I can buy 4 electric gate openers with remotes for opening & closing a gate.
I honestly don’t think that gate would be that good if you had cattle in the paddock coz if they go to rub on it it would just open but I think it would be great in different scenarios
Very fiddly by the looks and I see issues arising when yarding cattle running them down the fence line - potential for them to bump it and lose them into the next paddock.
I remember the good old days in the CSG industry when I had 10 gates to open to get to a well head or storage pond……due to the GPS/telemetry monitoring systems in the vehicle, each gate required hand opening and every time the car was moving the seatbelt must be engaged for safety or it was instant dismissal!
@@FarmLearningTim I have a small property (5 acres) and this would be very handy. However, with the setup involved, and only using it once every week or two, maybe i should look for a smaller, simpler solution. Or just push the damn gate! I liked the video, though.

Ripper tip mate. Might even put this in a future video. Cheers.
Cheers! I'm trying this out first thing tomorrow.
Amazing
Hell yeah, thanks!
Great idea, seems very fiddly to install

Being TEXAS the bump gates would be bigger to I think
You were Tim, Ed...the first time you tryed the gate.
This is awesome
Ed was Tim??? Ok.
Where can I buy that mechanism for doors?

Nice video.
BUT
Whats to stop a cow or horse from bumping it open ??
Donde puedo comprar ese mecanismo.
Esta muy bueno y quero algunospara usarlos en mi rancho

Awesome invention. I hate opening and shutting gates.

Another great video! Thank you!
Great stuff Tim!
Seems unnecessarily complicated.
What stops a beast pushing the bar and opening the gate?
I'm glad that people like these gates.
However, I will stick with getting out of my vehicle to open and close gates.
Me too

Good morning Tim, I was really impressed with the concept of the bump gate. I would like to know how cattle effect them, cheers another great video.

4 electric openers for less than a grand? lol don't believe it
Where can I buy that mechanism. ?It's very good and I want several for my ranch.

Oscar I think your right goats would also have it figured out in a half hour too. Aussie Jeff
What scenarios do you have in mind?
Great!. You've made a good job.
Good evening Tim
CAN YOU IMPART SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT EXCLUSION FENCING
WHAT HIGH POSTS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND
Good evening Gregory. WATCH MY EXCLUSION FENCE VIDEO 😝 ruclips.net/video/9mHDI7HrXa4/видео.html

I'm hoping my misses doesn't see this, that gate wouldn't stand a chance, every vehicle would have dent in the front and one in the side. LOL 😆
I’m hoping that she doesn’t see this comment or you’ll have dents of your own matey! 😂
Very cool
Did you say cudge screw? We call them carriage bolts here, if I'm seeing it right.
Coach screw
great idea
The best of fences move over time, I gather that you are not confident of its long term viability. (Reading between the lines)
really solid stays...concreted in
Great video mate, just a quick one, what sort of watch do you want whilst working?
?? One that works??

No one ever clicked the seatbelt in and then sat on it? So I heard from a friend of a friend
...😄😄
society is run by softcocks that see risk everywhere.....and want life to be like a computer program
what are your thoughts on weather this would work with a mobility scooter?
No. Just no.
I now seem like a barbarian using my normal gate and a chain.
😅
I'm in the states and this would be really great for my horses and cattle
...so they could open the gates themselves?
Well I never! Such an interesting idea, unfortunately I can see my pigs sitting in a line watching and plotting.
That’s what pigs do eh?
for the record, thomas jefferson had automatically opening doors in his house. there were pressure points in the floor. the house still exists.
Good job. My horses would rub their asses on it and my cattle would rub on it until they learnt how to open it. Haha.
fence posts always move. especially gate posts.
Yep
A week for concrete to set ! I would have given it a decent day.
Manufacturers recommend this. Yep seems excessive
8:35 Should have read the instructions, hey...and did Paul say, "Read the instructions!"?
Noice veedeo maite but that design looks a bit fidley. Aiw will look for a different model thuanks.
Would this work with a ride on lawn mower do you think?
Hmmm. Not sure to be honest

What's the point of having kids then?
My animals would wreck it in no time unless I electrified the gate.
My sheep would open this gate within hours. Fine for other uses, but not livestock
That sure looks like a sheep farmer solution.
👍👍👍👍👍
Someone's thought about this aye
My cows would open it
If they can learn to open a normal gate latch it wouldn't take long for them to open this
Too much mucking around for me, pass
