Casper please listen to this, this actually has some minor importance. If your reactions to this series continue, I'd highly recommend watching the CR mini campaign EXU Calamity before going into season 3 (Or at least before watching S3 EP3). It isn't a required watch or anything, and it is a bit of a commitment at almost 20 hours long. Just trust me when I say it's entirely worth it. It's one of the best actual plays of all time, and most importantly it's an incredibly beautiful and emotional experience, which has one of its best story lines completely spoiled as a cameo in Season 3 (To be clear I like the cameo, it just spoils to much for my taste). If you ever have any interest in watching that, then please try to do so before watching Season 3 of this show. If you see this it would be nice to get some response, even if it isn't specifically a yes or no, just so that I know not to post this again in the future. Additionally if anyone disagrees with me on anything here (I don't get why they would, this is more of a just in case thing) then please keep any responses to this comment spoiler free, for Casper's sake. Also just some mostly unimportant background information. This show differs in fairly major ways from how the original campaign went, though it mostly follows its events, at least loosely. Additionally it actually starts after the first story arc of the campaign.
You should get him to watch TP Burrows table to screen videos so he can see our trauma firsthand! They’re spoiler free and definitely something I would recommend ppl check out even if you’re just hanging out with your best buddies!
Fun-non spoiler-fact about this series: Originally it was only gonna be a 3 episode mini series about one of the arcs. They did a kickstarter that raised I think around 11 million (their goal was 750k, they hit 1 mil in the first day) Amazon picked it up, the first 2 episodes are completely original to the series and follow loosely on something that happened in their home game. Episode 3 onwards follows a beloved arc that happened in the livestream of critical role
I think it was supposed to only be a 2 episode special, but they raised 1 million in the first HOUR of the Kickstarter, not the first day lol. It was epic. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Vox_Machina
The adventure begins, they were always beside you, your nerdy best friends, and the DM to guide you! So excited for Cas to experience more Vox Machina :3!
The thing about Matt Mercer is that during the game, as the Dungeon Master, he did the voices for *every* NPC. So even with all these cameos, he's still doing 90% less than he did originally. Also, some of the Matts were designed to look like him too, and are basically Matt stand-ins throughout the world, as the group repeatedly gets accidental revenge on him for what he's put them through in-game. For example, the guy who Scanlan peed on towards the start wasn't only voiced by Matt, but was made to look like him as well. Logic was the guard who said "the bear waits outside." I wouldn't get too wrapped up in wondering about specific rolls and rules - this is a narrative built around the major high points and plot lines from the campaign. So it only comes up occasionally that something mirrors or is directly caused by a D&D rule. For example, "roll to walk" is not something that most any D&D table would bother with.
For the record, the cast of Critical Role/Legend of Vox Machina recently released a holiday album which is absolutely epic, so if you like the show, well worth checking out! Many songs are in character voice for characters from later campaigns, but I don't think there are any spoilers for this campaign (other Critters feel free to correct me). It's called Critical Role Presents: Winter's Crest. Can't wait to see these reactions, you always find new ways of looking at things that I didn't think of!
YAY! So hyped for this reaction! Welcome to the adventure, you're going to have a great time! The Hozier image sent me 🤣 Morgan, your editing is giving me so much joy. I'm always so entertained when someone hasn't seen the trailer (it spoils the fate of the first party we see) I love watching people try and figure out who each party member is and then *SUDDENROCK * Your delight is delightful, great reaction! I can't wait to watch you fall in love with these glorious disasters :D
As a disclaimer, they started streaming Vox machina at later times, these first 2 episodes aren’t in livestream as it’s from back when they were still a home game. Ep 3 onwards is when they began streaming, they’re much higher level, around 10 or more I think
Sam aka Scanlan comes from musical theatre and is still part of an Acapella group. During the game he would make song parodies on the spot as a part of Scanlans character.
I'm so excited to hear you break down more of the music stuff! Yes. The casts' kids are often the kids in the series. Also your editor is amazing and funny. Loved all the little pop ups during
5:13 So actually what you are seeing here is Casper using an extremly rarely seen 9th level spell known to the wisests of wizards as "Power Word: Puke" and the effects of its use on Keyleth-
Sam, who plays Scanlan, was Gavroche in the first Lincoln Center cast of Les Miserables. And Logic was in this first episode because he's friends with the core cast. He actually plays (or at least used to) in a home game with some of them
Grog's VA Travis Willingham is Turelyon and Monte Gazlowe Percy's VA Talisen Jaffe voices The Deathknight Darion Mograine If you're a big wow player you've heard a lot of the cast's voices there. Excited for this series!
And Neal Acree wrote the score for WoW as well. He was such a fan of CR that when he heard they were putting together an animated series, he wrote an orchestral version of their CR theme song, got the Budapest Scoring Orchestra to record it and sent it to Travis. That's the song you hear in the end credits. The Scanlan songs are written and sung by Scanlan's Voice Actor Sam Riegel, with music composition help from his brother-in-law Peter Habibi, half of the producing duo Mr. Fantastic.
26:44 It's understandable if you feel like you dont currently have the time to play a campaign but dont ever think that you are "too bad" to play DnD! Everyone and anyone can play it, as long as you are having fun you are doing it well. You can also do one shots if you dont wanna commit to a campaign. You probably know people who are able and willing to help you try it out again as long as you want to do it, and it's an amazing experience to have
So, the music in the tavern fight is based on the song "Your Turn to Roll" written largely by Sam Riegel, the voice of the Bard Scanlan Shorthalt, but it wasn't created until midway through the second campaign. So if you want to you can safely react to the theme song without spoiling any of *this* show. (However, the campaign it was made for is also being turned into a series.)
I believe "Your Turn to Roll" was originally an instrumental theme for C1 written by their friend Jason Charles Miller - Sam wrote lyrics and worked with JCM to rework the song as they started preparing for the LoVM Kickstarter, and it became the theme for their second campaign!
BIDET, CASPER! I. Am. SO HYPED!!!! for this reaction series!!! You are going to LOVE it! I love Critical Role so so so so much and to get to see you (one of my very fav creators) react to it is going to be amazing!!!!
Oh I am very excited for you to react to one of my favourite series! I am glad you keep reacting to the best content out there! This series definitly revived my passion with dnd and helped me with storytelling as a whole.
RUclips recommended me this, I think since I watched you with Mortius on the Open Arms channel and because I love new The Legend of Vox Machina reactions. Your editor (Morgan) had me giggling. Basing on how you analysed Legally Blonde, I'm looking forward to seeing your analysis of the music as not many (if any) have done that.
I didn’t check cause there’s too many comments a;ready but if you’re interested in a spoiler free’ish video I’d highly recommend the making of the legend of vox machina. They’ve got one episode where they go over the voices for characters if you’re interested. ❤ the reaction. I’ve been into critical role since its inception on Geek and Sundry almost the full 10 years. I’m excited to see your journey.
I very much recommend watchign the behind the scenes videos, especially the ones about the cast! The legend of the cast of the Legend of Vox Machina. Edit to note both Logic and Khary Payton are friends of the show as are a bunch of other voice actors on the cast. Voice acting community is tight knit and a lot of people are dnd fans.
DUDE!!! I'm so excited that you are reacting to Legend of Vox Machina!!! I found you with Epic and never DREAMED that my Critical Role obsession would ALSO be found here!! SO FREAKING EXCITED LETS GO!!! Also, man, you got the Epic fandom, welcome to the Critical Role fandom, it's a whole nother thing man!!!
to give some of the dnd backgrounds, you've got it mostly, although the show is based on their campaign, so they didn't do any rolls for the show itself. They adapted the events more or less directly, with adjustments here and there for stuff that doesn't work in a tv show context. But you are right that you can relate alot of the actions to dice rolls or skill checks, but everything show is technically scripted (I say technically because it's scripted from the live-streamed campaign like I said, so a script based off of improv). I am very excited to see you go through the series, it is one of my favorites!
the joke about a clever play on worlds is that Voxs Machina is Latin for Voice Machine its the name they picked when they started streaming their game since they where all voice actors. in their home game the where the SHITS. they figured that would not a good name to call themselves on a live stream.
@Casper Fox Ooh! Professional Singer is reacting to and analyzing LoVM! This is new! I am SO here for this! I can't wait to hear your opinions and breakdowns of all of Scanlan's (The Bard) songs. Fun Fact: Sam Riegel, the voice of Scanlan Shorthalt (The Gnome Bard), was Gavroche in Les Miserable when he was a kid. So yeah, he's a legit singer and songwriter who has been singing, pretty much, all his life. Every song in this series that has lyrics was written by him. They're all original songs. In the Campaign, Sam used parodic arrangements of Pop Music to cast his Bard Spells. Of course, they don't have the rights to all of those songs, so he had to write all new music for Scanlan for the Animated Series. At some point, you should look up "Scanlan's Songs" on RUclips. There's, at least, one compilation out there of the songs he's sung. I think you, being a singer and songwriter yourself, would appreciate the lyrics he came up with, pretty much, on the spot. In fact, the song you heard at the end was originally written by Sam Riegel. The original has lyrics and was used for their Campaign 2 Theme Song, but was originally written for this show. Neal Acree took that song and Orchestrated it for this series. Oh and he did that FOR FREE. He Orchestrated the song and hired an Orchestra to record it and sent it to Critical Role as a "Thank You" for considering him for the job. Oh and since you mentioned it at the top of the video, Neal Acree did most of the music for Overwatch. So yeah, Critical Role aren't just any Voice Actors. They're the best of the best and they personally know the best of the best. Also it's funny that you mention Young Justice. The Character Designer for Legend of Vox Machina is Phil Bourassa. Phil was DC Animated's Character Designer on shows including Young Justice. Travis Willingham (Grog) has worked with Phil on a Batman Project and just happened to run into him on a flight. And it was Phil who saw Travis, actually, and said "hi" to him. Travis was like, "Hey Phil, I'm working on this project and we need a Character Designer. Would you like to take a crack at it?" Phil was like, "Sure I'll have a go." According to the cast, he, pretty, much nailed the character designs on his first try. Every Actor they brought in for this show is there because Critical Role personally asked them. David Tennant, for example, voiced Scrooge McDuck in the latest DuckTales Show from Disney. Sam Riegel directed some of the episodes so he met David Tennant while directing him and got his phone number. Sam, literally, texted David to ask him if he wanted to take this role. It's amazing what can be accomplished when you know the right people. Anyway that's enough from me for now. I'm glad you like the show so far!
The best way I’ve found to remember which is Vex and which is Vax is to pay attention to the vowels in their names. Vax has an A because he’s mAle, and the first vowel in male is an A. Vex has an E because she’s fEmale, and the first vowel in female is an E. And then their full names make it even more obvious. Vex’ahlia and Vax’ildan are much more gendered than the shortened Vex and Vax. Fun trivia: the actors for Vex and Vax, Laura and Liam, came up with the idea of playing twins because they share a birthday! And because their names both start with L they made their characters’ names both start with V!
The original kickstarter trailer for Legend of Vox Machina has lyrics for the end song that you were jamming out to. You should totally react to the song from the original kickstarter trailer!
You should react to the Critical Role songs. They were written mostly by Sam Riegal the guy who plays the bard, Scanlan. He also wrote the D&D Beyond theme.
I watched your Hamilton reactions , and am a long time Critical Role fan. Very excited to see you doing this and I’m looking forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of Vox Machina!
Yes! A few relatively spoiler free/low spoiler things. So the first two episodes are based on pre stream events, as the main cast had been playing these characters in their home game of D&D (technically a similar game called Pathfinder I believe) for a while before they started to livestream the game. A lot of the moments are based on the game and on game mechanics, but not everything will be a direct recreation. In D&D you typically start at a low level, 1 or close to it and characters will advance as the story goes on typically until eventually reaching level 20 or close to it, if they live that long. But by the time the livestreams start our main characters are closer to mid level, in these first couple of episodes they would likely be a couple of levels below where they start in the first livestream.
When Neil Acree heard that Critical Role was getting an animated show he knew he wanted to do the music for it. So he hired an orchestra, burned a CD and sent it to them with a label "For your consideration."
Check out 'Your Turn to Roll' it was originally going to be the intro, but then I guess they got an instrumental instead...(it has been a while and I am unsure of what happened anymore)
So fun non-spoiler fact: This show IS FUCKING STACKED with voice actors! The King is Khary Payton aka Cyborg from Teen Titans! Even the main characters are all acclaimed VAs from Laura Bailey (who voices Naruto's mom, Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, Maka Albarn from Soul Eater) to Travis Willingham (Ace from One Piece, Roy Mustang from FMA, Knuckles the Echidna) to LIAM O'BRIEN (Who voices Gaara from Naruto!))
Casper, if you liked that music at the end you HAVE TO react to the official Song made by critical role, it's called "Your turn to roll" i think you'd like it 😊
Welp I hope he does the rest of the series and other seasons. I was actually more impressed with this reaction/analysis then the other 5 or so I've watched.

I have to say, Casper's cursing being censored with Sam's scream while none of the cursing in the show is, is kind of peak humour.

I used to remember it this way
A = Adam (male)
E = Eve (female)
People have also specifically given this as a helpful tool:
Adam = A = Male = Vax
Eve = E = Female = Vex
The original kickstarter trailer for Legend of Vox Machina has lyrics for the end song that you were jamming out to. You should totally react to the song from the original kickstarter trailer!
You just fell into another of my favourite fandoms and I'm so happy about this!
A combination i didn't know i needed until now
Oh my god Im so excited youre watching tlovm!! Enjoy!!
well I did not expect this! another person to watch go through Vox Machina is always welcome! Bidet, Casper!
You should react to the Critical Role songs. They were written mostly by Sam Riegal the guy who plays the bard, Scanlan. He also wrote the D&D Beyond theme.
YES! I AM SO EXCITEDDDDD
They are actually at level 7 when the series began (I believe).
This I did not predict, my favorite music reactor meets my favorite adaptation
When Neil Acree heard that Critical Role was getting an animated show he knew he wanted to do the music for it. So he hired an orchestra, burned a CD and sent it to them with a label "For your consideration."
I can't wait, let's go!
Also, how awesome would it be to get a d&d one shot with the Open Arms duo and other reactors?
Great reaction. I suspect you already know you're going to have a great time with this series. Looking forward to more!
Heck, yeah, Casper! Do the whole series, please! It's so flipping good, bro!!!
Ahhhh!!!😍 yay Vox Machina !❤
YESSSSSSS IM SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO SEE THIS SERIES!!!
im late but OMG this is so exciting i hope you have fun !!!!
Check out 'Your Turn to Roll' it was originally going to be the intro, but then I guess they got an instrumental instead...(it has been a while and I am unsure of what happened anymore)
Oh hell yeah! Casper reacting to my favorite cast? Today must be my birthday
THIS IS GONNA BE SO GOODDD
The end credit song is based on critical role’s opening song “your turn to roll”.
I'm so hyped for this
Fun fact about the cast of Critical role and WoW, Grog is also Gazlowe (yeah that's a crazy range)
the person who got pissed on is matt mercer, there is one of him in every episode.
see if u can spot them
Ooooh you’re reacting to one of my favorite shows? LETS GO!!🎉
So fun non-spoiler fact:
This show IS FUCKING STACKED with voice actors!
Casper reacting to Vox Machina? This is going to be awesome! ❤
HOLY FUCK??? did NOT expect to see this from you but I am so here for it!
Oh shit Casper and CR together!!!
Casper, if you liked that music at the end you HAVE TO react to the official Song made by critical role, it's called "Your turn to roll" i think you'd like it 😊
I am SO excited to watch you enjoy this!!!
Another small tidbit for you - the little boy and girl in the village are voiced by Sam Riegel's son and Liam O'Brien's daughter 👍🏻
I'm SO Happy you know Warcraft!
I love critical role so much, I'm so hyped for your journey with these series!
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS!!!
Welp I hope he does the rest of the series and other seasons. I was actually more impressed with this reaction/analysis then the other 5 or so I've watched.
Yay Vox Machina!
BTW Grog's epic burp was created by mixing Laura's and Marisha Ray's burps, not any of the guys.
YEEEESSSSS! I love this show.
