A canvas mantlet cover was designed, and Chrysler began to install the fittings for it around October, 1944. We can only conclude that they had a problem finding a contractor to provide the actual canvas cover, as these don't appear to have been factory installed until January 1945. Also in the Fall, a cap with retaining chain was installed over the smoke mortar aperture. M4A3(76)s with just the mantlet cover fittings begin to show up in Europe in early February, 1945.
I found leaving them in half was a much easier way of building this 1.1.16 sherman believe it or not! Wouldn't do it on a 1.35 but this size it's kinda a must for easy of moving around it was alot simpler building the bottom first then the top hull! And now on the turret! Do it in 3 sub sections what a difference in ease of building! There was no fitting issues with the hull on AHQ putting bottom to top after building it was test fitted all the way through before going ahead and glueing but left the sprue gate on as handles in the turret ring only the rear plate that had any fit issues really
I looked through my 1/16 Sherman from AHH as you went through yours. They both look like they will make great kits. Im happier that I got the AHH version though as yours seems to have a few inaccurate areas. But again...thats rivet counting stuff. They will BOTH be great builds. Yours looks to have much more complicated tracks. And im glad they both come with a figure. All in all they are both comparable and will look great. Im already planing on getting the AHH tiger when it comes out. He has an eye for accurate details and so far I'm loving it. Can't wait to see you build yours up and compare it to mine. Love the video.
Thanks Dave - yeah it was a toss up on this one and the AHH Sherman, I went in somewhat blind but it looks like the base versions of these kits will be a similar price. I kind of prefer the way Trumpeter armour goes together compared to Takom, but again only slightly. Just grateful we've got a big Sherman! And yes Im itching to get it started, but I really need to finish my Tiger! Cheers Chris
Its not rivet counting if it's that obvious. Plus it cost 100+ more than the AHH kit with less detail, 1,000+ more parts and literally a tank that doesn't exist. Lol
@@willthorson4543 In Australia, the base level I Love Kit (without detail up set) is $90 cheaper than AHHQ, whereas the detailed up version (the one I'm reviewing) is only $20 more expensive. This is probably due to transport costs? I got mine for 25% off so its nearly $100 cheaper than Andy's.... I might address the accuracy concerns in a separate video, any help you could give in this area Will would be very grateful. I'm not that fussed about accuracy for armour (although I did go overboard on my 1/16 Tiger) - and I prefer buildability over anything else, even if a few details are wrong. I find Takom a little less pleasurable to build compared to Trumpeter/Hobby Boss armour, due to the large number of ejection tabs, seam clean up and sometimes frustrating fit. I've build most of their 1/16 tankettes, and quite a few of their 1/35 kits - all lovely but slightly frustrating to get to the finish line. Hey Chris, about the box "fart", my grandmother used to blame that on the dog, if ya know what I mean, but Penney is so sweet to do that so the box will do :-) To the tank, I'm not sure you've got more parts than the original Sherman - what a monster kit. There has to be a scale limit coming soon. I'm not an armour guy, but the red stripes on the decals might be for spots that part of the star would be covered over and they couldn't must make a four cornered star, it may need to be cut off, a possibility. There are two quick stories on German tanks, due to military politics and production capabilities along with fuel supply, German armour used gasoline There were efforts to make a diesel but military ,wanted high rpm, even though their real nemesis the Russians were very successful with Diesel. Here is where their intelligence fell off. First in Battle of the Bulge Germans dressed as American soldiers , who spoke English very well, were penetrating the lines but carrying rubber hoses to siphon fuel for their vehicles. They didn't count on American tanks having gasolinel engines. The ruse was caught on to quickly. Next mistake - ( don't let Penny hear this), the Germans captured many of our guard dogs, mostly Sheperds, and trained them to sneak underneath an American tank. The dogs had a bomb attached, when the dog was under the tank, they would trigger the bomb and destroy the tank, However, the Germans big mistake was teaching the dogs to do this on German tanks. G'day Chris, Like you, I mostly model aircraft but a few months back I saw a discount price on a 1/16 Trumpeter Mk I Abrams AIM MBT and snapped it up. Most of my models are from WW2 and Korea but there is something about the design of the Abrams that really appeals to me so, as they were being used by our Tank Corps, I thought I'd do up an accurate as possible rendition of an Aussie Abrams. What I wasn't prepared for was the box it came in; not so much as a box but a medium to large sized 'suitcase' is a better description. It even has a suitcase like carrying handle at the top. It's mammoth. Inside the 'suitcase' sleeve is the main box which has, neatly grouped inside it, a collection of different sized boxes holding various similar kinds of parts. I reckon it's over the top in packaging but it has kept every single part well protected and one can work out of each box as their contents apply to the upper and lower hulls plus the turret. My hobby room is small and already stuffed with my stash; the 'Abrams Suitcase' dominates all the other boxes and 'screams' at me to get it open and get stuck in. The work space on my hobby table is too small to do the assembly of the tank which I'll have to transfer to our huge dining table in the house. That will please SWMBO no end. I have promised to finish a few other large aircraft kits first so the 'Abrams Suitcase' will just have to wait. Am I daunted by the 1/16 tank; am intimidated by it, even just a little? First off notice the suspension is way over engendered compared to AHQs sherman being there all workable aswell! These took me 6 hours to out 6 biggies together so can only imagine the time with these one's! Haha been alot and I mean alot of cleaning up on this thing! I've just done takoms 1.16 jeep the clean up on that too was alot!
It does seem that way, I've built up one set and it goes together very easily so far, not much cleanup, compared to the cleanup on the Takom/AHHQ kit. I'll report back soon on it!
The difference between this kit and AHQ’s suspension is this one actually makes a decent attempt of making the HVSS suspension workable, while Andy’s kit is really badly designed and doesn’t show how the HVSS suspension actually works. It’s easier to build for a reason.
Oh...and I agree...I think 1/16 is more build for your buck. But...thats a lot of bucks (and space required) to have a large 1/16th collection. But...I do agree that its a great scale size.
Looks like my tracks I have waiting to be made / put together. They are rubber instead of plastic pads. I was going to put brass pins and brass tubing so that they work because they go on the 1/16 scale RC Sherman tank. I've had them for years just never got around to really wanting to assemble them. Got plastic and metal tracks for the Sherman as well. Been working on my tiger on that's 1 / 16th scale for 8 years. got kind of sidetracked on it. My dad got sick and I took care of him the last three years of his life. After that life got in the way. I had been trying to remake everything out of brass and wood and make things function like on the real tank. Been a learning experience trying to figure out what does what and how it does it. Plus I kind of lost interest cuz my dad really enjoyed seeing some of my creations and when he passed I guess my enthusiasm kind of went with him. I just don't enjoy as much as I used to.
For flat foot foggie you'll need to add all the applique armour to the turret and front check RFMs new Flat foot foogie or net info for details Any of the Thunderbolts using the stars with the red strips you cannot build out the box as no extra armour as they had and the tracks are wrong! You can only go with the normal white stars for this kit I'm afraid! Quite a bad research job from Trumpeter on this kit!
“Any of the Thunderbolts using the stars with the red strips you cannot build out the box as no extra armour as they had and the tracks are wrong!” There’s literally a famous photo easily found online of an Easy Eight Sherman from the 11th Armored crossing a river in Austria with no appliqué armor and have the T-80 tracks.
And also the HVSS suspension - nearly 30 parts per bogie....there's barely any parts for the hull pieces, I just finished construction of the hull and it takes less time than to make the bogies...

1/16 scale is PERFECT for RC. 1/16" = I". You can scratch build detail easily to 1/2" real thing detail! (wire, bolts, posters on the walls, whatever) I made a RC 156' F.A.C. Ship model in this scale. It's 9'6" long weighs 200 lbs w/ working Exocet missles. The auto-melara 3" gun is 3/16" bore. Real bullets can be used to simulate all naval caliber guns in this scale. .20-.30-.375-.50bmg for 3"-5"-6" and 8" naval guns. It's a great size for twin engine aircraft also. 100' span in reality is 75" in 1/16. Perfect for RC!!!
Just ordered one of these this morning and really looking forward to starting 2025 with my build. Great review and insight into the build process.

ITs better if you have mainly tankettes, like I have with the FT17, the Panzer 1s, Type 94 etc - I'm loving the Takom tankette range...
No Chris, you can't do the Sherman with the under pinning's up lol
I'll try!
Looks a nice kit, bloody huge though!
I know mate, but gotta have one in the cabinet next to my Tiger, thats the whole reason to get one!
1/6 is huge , 1/16 is the normal standard
For flat foot foggie you'll need to add all the applique armour to the turret and front check RFMs new Flat foot foogie or net info for details Any of the Thunderbolts using the stars with the red strips you cannot build out the box as no extra armour as they had and the tracks are wrong! You can only go with the normal white stars for this kit I'm afraid! Quite a bad research job from Trumpeter on this kit!
Typical Trumpeter Research....heh heh yeah they make good kits, but let down in those areas. No one manufacturer is perfect, except Bandai maybe.
“Any of the Thunderbolts using the stars with the red strips you cannot build out the box as no extra armour as they had and the tracks are wrong!”
There’s literally a famous photo easily found online of an Easy Eight Sherman from the 11th Armored crossing a river in Austria with no appliqué armor and have the T-80 tracks.
They get that number because of the parts that go into the tracks lol
And also the HVSS suspension - nearly 30 parts per bogie....there's barely any parts for the hull pieces, I just finished construction of the hull and it takes less time than to make the bogies...
I take it your going to build it in flight.
The tracks make my soul hurt.
Not inflight...maybe going over a rise? And yeah the tracks look like FUN!
@@beckersmodels But if you make it in flight you can have the landing gear retracted. No need to worry about the tracks. 🤠
Have to say seeing this and building andys knowing my shermans it's not a patch on Andys 1.16 sorry to say!
Tyre is English English, Tire is American English
Really? Odd way to spell tyre...but then again American English ain't.
@@beckersmodels as the great man Sir Winston Churchill said two Allies separated by a common language. English English uses a y as a sixth vowel and spells things differently to American English a point is colour in UK but color in US. Strange people those colonials lol
You should rc it for more fun
Thats a rabbit hole I dont want to go down!
@@beckersmodels too late for me, I went for it 12 years ago and now I can't go back
1/16 scale is PERFECT for RC.
