Written in 1937, Missa São Sebastião (Saint Sebastian Mass) pays homage to the patron saint of Villa-Lobos's home city of Rio de Janeiro. The premiere, which Villa-Lobos conducted, took place in the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro on November 13, 1937. The teachers of the schools Paulo de Frontin and João Alfredo made up the female choir that performed the work. As indicated in the score, the piece was dedicated to Frei Pedro Sinzig.
Villa-Lobos sets the text of the Ordinary of the Mass, and to each of the Mass's six sections he adds a recitative. He indicates in the score that these recitatives should precede each section when the Mass is performed in the concert hall. The recitatives were published in the Irmãos Vitale edition of the Mass in 1939 and in the second volume of the Solfejes Collection in 1946. The text used in the recitatives exalts Saint Sebastian:
Kyrie: Sebastião! O Virtuoso! (Sebastian! The virtuous!)
Gloria: Sebastião! Soldado romano! (Sebastian! Roman Soldier!)
Credo: Sebastião! Defensor da Igreja! (Sebastian! Defender of the Church!)
Sanctus: Sebastião! O Martir! (Sebastian! The Martyr!)
Benedictus: Sebastião! O Santo! (Sebastian! The Saint!)
Agnus Dei: Sebastião! Protetor do Brasil! (Sebastian! Protector of Brazil!)
The arching lines of the Mass are often compared in style with the Spanish polyphony of Victoria or Morales. In Villa-Lobos's words, his Mass was written with faith, disciplined imagination, and religious sentiment. The style is more closely related to an international sacred style than to his own.
