  • With a mountain of oddly shaped scraps, I decided to start testing out some fun, smaller ideas that could be great as gifts. These earrings came to mind on a whim of wanting to spend some time turning.

How to make, or how I made, these scrap wood earrings.
    Let’s get into it.
I started by collecting a pile of scraps ranging from walnut, to cherry, to maple, to rubber wood.
Then used the cross cut sled to cut thin slivers from each
First person to guess correctly what project this laminated piece came from gets a new HW|D shop shirt on me :)
Once I had a decent pile of slivers, I laid out a fun random pattern,
    Then, glued the stack together.
After it cured, I used the bandsaw to cut all the edges flush
    Pretty cool
Then, I cut the blank in half to get closer to a square blank, AND to give myself a spare in case the lathe and cutter don’t get along later. Good thing too.
I found the center on either side and began rounding the cylinder.
Once I got to a dimension I fancied, I sanded it down.
Then cut the wobbly ends down
For the other earring, I stuck with just walnut, wanting to try out adding a little shine to the piece.
After getting the cylinder to size, I used a parting tool to cut a few small recesses
Then, filled them with super glue, before laying in some gold leaf.
I used accelerator to get them to stick
    Then, sanded down the excess.
With both earring shaped done, I used the drill press to cut a slight recess for the earring pin (sets of which I picked up on amazon).
Then used super glue to place them
I used an orbital sander to tidy up the end grain.
Then applied some tung oil before deciding I didn’t like the ambering and switched to a semi gloss poly instead.
    And that’s a wrap.

Haha! The shirt is still on the table, but it wasn’t a cutting board per se…
