      Standard Leo Fender scale is 34 inches. Longer scale results in higher string tension resulting in more harmonics.
      Short scale has lesser string tension for more of the base fundamental frequency.

    I should mention that the palm mute technique with the pick can lead to fatigue and pain pretty quickly, even if it's perfect for guitar.
    That's why the sponge/foam was originally used, to prevent hands falling off at hours long gigs and sessions.

    • @LivingroomGearDemos
      @LivingroomGearDemos  4 года назад +36

      yup, good point.

    • @nishot2639
      @nishot2639 4 года назад +23

      Instead of putting more pressure when you want to mute more you can also move your hand towards the pick ups, how further away you get from the bridge how more you are muting. That way you don't need to put any use any pressure

    • @superbroadcaster
      @superbroadcaster 4 года назад +18

      It's really not that bad, a lot of it is pressure and volume control. You can palm mute for a long period of time and still get the job done, turn your rig up a little more and pick less hard so you don't have to mute as hard Just work smarter and not harder.
      -From a longtime gigger that picks aggressively

    • @Terrible_Peril
      @Terrible_Peril 4 года назад +2

      #can’trelate one of my biggest bass heroes is Bobby Vega. I palm mute all the time when using a pick and I don’t feel pain. I’m talking several hours of it a day, minimum, for 20+ years. Often what happens, and I think what you’re referring to, is when a cat’s going for this kind of sound they lay their palm down over all the strings and then start using their finger and thumb muscles to move the pick through the strings. Definitely delivers the plunky warm sound we’re after in this scenario. But that’s poor economy of motion and basically just bad technique. I find it’s good to get more of your picking motion from muscles farther up your arm, and for the mutes you can just get some skin in contact and either clamp it down with a little turn of the wrist or leave it a little more open.
      But hey, it’s all about the sound, and any way we get there is good as long as we pay attention to our bodies.

That setting is what Paul always used on each Beatles song that has a hofner. So from please please me to help and on let it be. On the other albums, he used his rick except for the white album. You want authentic? Then put La bella flats on a pbass or jazz bass, then get some 3/8" tall X 1/2" wide black foam rubber weather stripping at Ace Hardware closed cell, medium density. Stick it on the bridge cover just like Fender did originally but you gotta put it right up against the bridge saddles. Voila authentic mute with just the right decay. Imho what works is something which emphasizes the tone, so you need a compressor setting with a short attack, long release and low threshold, and turn up the gain. It's especially good on compressors which add a bit of tube saturation to the signal.
      Depending on your recording, as the threshold is low, you might want a gate before the compressor.

    Get a cheap shortscale violin bass and try Rotosound RS88LD Black Nylons. Instant 60s. Used these strings on a Framus shortscale years ago in a coverband for all 60s work....

    Hi
    What BIAS FX preset do you use? or did you create your own one for this tone, if so what is the chain?
    Thanks

    My absolute favorite bass track of all time is sympathy for the devil, which I read was played by Keith Richards on the ‘68 recording, not Bill Wymsn. Lots of attack, deep, woody, hollow sound.

    Try the nylon coated flat wound strings also!

    If you time it correctly, you can get a sweet base loop of "Money" by pressing "J" at 3:10 mins

    Hofner ignition series with a orange 🍊 bass amp, played with a pick. Only issue is I HATE the bridge on the hofner, so I am going to get a fender precision or jag. I like ole muddy bass tones but I also like clean well rounded tones when needed.
