What a great opportunity...I signed up, so thank you Amy and Craftsy for gifting this to your subscribers!!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how GORGEOUS that purple sky is in the boat piece?? 😍😍
Im a full on whimsical rainbow girl!! 🌈 Have been all my life!! 😂 Accepting that it is okay for a middle aged lady to still do that is also a challenge... This is an excellent video and very encouraging!! 🥰 Remember that those who leave unkind comments are showing you their personality. It is not a reflection on you!!🤗
I'm right there with you on the rainbow girl thing! I love color, and I mean bright l, saturated color. To the point where one of the art teachers I had kept telling me muted colors looked more elegant and professional. And I spent a long time trying to fit into that box before I asked myself why. You do you! There I'd only one you in the world and you have something special to shre that no one else can! Thank you for taking the time to watch!
@winterwoodsstudio I agree!! 🩷 Bright and colorful!! 🌈 It really draws people to you who enjoy that as well!! 🥰 I find that they are oftentimes the most fun, bubbly people!! 🤗 You're quite welcome!! 💞
Good advice Amy, I know I'm guilty of wanting to do it all, buying too much, getting overwhelmed and then doing nothing. I will definitely think about what you said for new year.😊
Great video so so helpful. Merry Christmas to you and your family God bless ❤️ 🙏 Merry Christmas to all of your beautiful subscribers from Ontario 🎄❤️😍🇨🇦👍🎄
Guurrrlll ... you read me the riot act for certain ... & also confirmed my just-started intentions for 2025 list ... ii love all your shares, am inspired every week to work thru challenges (just like amy), & am inordinately grateful for having found ur channel... blessings on you & your house.
Feeling called out by #5. 😂. Thanks for the much-needed tough love today.
Right?! 😂 It’s to early in the morning for this conversation - 😆🫣🫠❤️
Thank you, Amy! I have found that just sticking to sketching and using colored pencils is enough for me - a little water color for background. Thank you for letting me know that that's okay! I heard that it is a good idea to find inspiration in your everyday life, so that's what I am focusing on. Keep up your videos; you tell it like it is.
A truly helpful and inspiring video. Thanks so much, Amy! 👍💖
Loved your video and seeing your paintings. I love paintings of people and have tried to do portraits, ones that aren’t full on faces, mostly of my grandchildren. I have one that I’ve done 5 times and still not happy with it, but I think of it as a study. I’m determined I’m gonna finally get the hang of painting flesh. Thanks for the encouragement in finding ones style!
Awesome video!! Thank you!! ❤❤
Great advice! Thank you Amy. 😊
You are welcome, Madelyn! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
I loved the video, great topic. You definitely have lots of wisdom and nuggets of truth to help. I lean towards landscaping. I most admire impressionist type paintings. Realist work is beautiful as well. Monet is my favorite artist of all time. You have brought up so much food for thought, ty!
Great advice I’m going back to a few basic watercolour paints I get overwhelmed by to many choices so I’m going to simplify things and go forward from there. 😊👩🏻🎨
Loved this video. I’m still a far way from having a style of my own but love the learning process. I have tried and emulated many different styles to find me. A work in progress. I do know the time I spend immersed in my art is my best time.
I love trees and clouds. They are my favorite things to paint.
I LOVE skies! One of my favorites! And water... that's my other favorite! Thanks for watching and commenting, Tessa!
Plenty of good advice in that video! I definitely go along with the idea that, while an experienced professional can create great art out of almost any materials, for a beginner the higher quality materials will so often make the learning process much easier. I couldn't layer or blend watercolour to save my life when I used normal cellulose watercolour paper - and the moment I changed to 100% cotton was a game-changer for me. I still struggle but at least I find that I'm now only fighting my (hopefully temporary) insufficient ability instead of fighting the materials I'm using. Thanks for another video that I'm sure gave many of us plenty to think about. Kind regards, Brian.
Great encouragement and #5 is something that applies to anything we want. Guess I better get a grip.
Oh my goodness....this is so helpful! I feel like I've been all over the place. Maybe that's part of my journey (?)
I did sign up for Craftsy. Thanks. Great video. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks! I needed to hear this today!! Im bad about making excuses and buying the best supplies and never using them. Im going to take your advice☺️
You are welcome! I hope it helps! You are so going to make amazing art! I can feel it! Thanks for watching!
Amazing video topic. I write literary fiction and my niece asked me to write her a book, which I enjoyed so much that I’m now writing and illustrating chapter books as well. I love the creative process. I easily found my style, but I regularly make mistakes and the only way to get the illustrations I have in mind for my stories is to redraw them until they look the way I want them to. They’re not perfect, but I’m having so much fun. I have noticed that the quality of supplies matters. For example, I like the effect of Ecoline a lot, but it fades so fast it isn’t suitable for a series of artworks. If I need to rescan something, the colors might already be off, so I’m switching to a similar medium that is lightfast. Affordable can sometimes be very costly.
I’m going to take your advice! It sounds great. Thank you ❤
Excellent advice! Your best advice video ever!
Wonderful advice! Thank you!
Good video girl. Tough love. I could even see myself in some of it. I buy the things and they sit. Of course, my life is in upheaval right now with my mom in hospice, but I can find 5 minutes to sketch! I've been lazy. Thanks! P. S. I finally ordered the Artists Way too.
Thank you, I needed this!
I’m basically a player if I see something I like I might try it or I’ll think how I could do it in a different way. When I taught fabric art I always encouraged class to look at art in all mediums. And really look at the world around you with art eyes watching light and shadow
That’s great advice for students! It’s always great to look at different mediums, artists, and styles! The more art you consume, the better artist you will be! Thanks for watching!
I think my problem is that I'm interested in too many supplies, one day I wanna do watercolour and then by the next I want to do coloured pencils or something. Guess that's my cue to cut back lol
On the other hand, you don't want to force yourself into an art routine that makes you unhappy. I change mediums on a weekly/monthly basis too. It's a fine line between staying inspired and flitting around too much, to the point where you skills aren't progressing. Only you can figure out which one is happening for you and make a plan! You got this!
@@winterwoodsstudio Yeah that makes sense, I've found that combining supplies (my favourite combo right now is gouache + colored pencils) has helped me stop overthinking less so there's that at least!
Great video ❤. I love Liquitex professional and basics for beginners.
First of all, you are a sweetie and I'm going to send you a big big hug. I don't agree with your point of using lower quality art material. Imagine two situations...in the first situation, the artist uses lower quality materials but ends up inspired by the subject and makes an absolutely beautiful detailed work. Damn, would have looked so much better on higher quality materials. Second situation, artist uses higher expensive materials and makes a mistake say with a pen and ink drawing. Damn I wasted the nice art materials. But I learned my mistake, don't dip the ink pen so far and now I don't make that mistake again and now I'm using high-quality material for best result. Also, when you use high quality you have a developing relationship with the higher material and it is inspiring you that you don't get with the lower. Also, when you're with the lower you are probably compensating, and then when you go to the higher, you have to adjust. When you are living with the higher quality materials then you are more able to maximize your intended results. I think you're going to get more out of it in the long run.
I love seeing your art. Would like to see more of it!
All of the pieces I showed in this video are up on my channel as full length videos from start to finish plus much more! Thanks for watching!
This was an excellent piece - informative and really motivating- one of your best!
Thank you so much! I'm glad it resonated with you! And thank you for watching!
Great advice, Amy. Thank you!
You're welcome! I hope you're having a great day! Thanks for watching!
Need some thoughts. I injured both my feet/and had surgery with hardware put in both . I have been in bed atrophying for 12 weeks. I'm feeling really down because I may have developed a chronic nerve pain condition. I finally have been wanting to do art again but it's not good, it looks like it did when I first started... as much as I want to paint, I'm in a negative head space and it shows. It's not so much an excuse I guess, more of discouragement.
I've been there and it's a hard place to be. I will say that your abilities will come back a lot faster then when you had to learn them the first time around. You're rusty. It happens to all of us. If you can push through it, it will come back! You've got this!
Here's some good thoughts! Also, I agree with Amy, your skills will come back faster than you're probably worried about right now.
thank you so much great information.
Glad it was helpful!
Always enjoy your videos. Lots of good info thank you.
Glad you like them! Thank you for watching!
I am a beginner in painting. I live in a small city and do not have a car to get around. Also, there is no scenic places in town and would need to travel many miles away for inspiration. I would like to practice my painting but do not know what to paint. Could you suggest a source for pictures or images for creating and practicing my art? Thank you
Pixabay, pexels, and unsplash are all reference photo sites where the photos are copyright free and you are free to use them in any art you want and sell the art or display it on the internet. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
Love this Amy! I just finished the book “How to steal like an artist” and wow! Amazing advice and great points, please check it out. ❤
I haven't read that one yet! I'm definitely going to go find it! Thanks for the recommendation and for watching!
💜💜💜
I’d like to find some skill. Not going to happen with;ut practice.
maybe we both ought to try out craftsy for a year ...
I feel like I need to quit. I have been playing for at least 9 years. My daughter and DIL started this year and are a million years better than me.
I'm going to tell you something that I constantly tell myself: "The only way to guarantee that you will fail is if you quit." I don't remember where I heard it (maybe it was something the Dali Lama said?? I can't remember) so I can't attribute it to someone, but it's become a bit of a mantra to me. If it's something you want, don't give up. Future You will thank Present You!
My daughter is also miles better than me at the age of 16, however I keep in mind that she has had so many more resources at her fingertips than I did. I also love her artwork, but am not drawn to her style for my own creative endeavors. Another thing I am certain of is that I no longer want to be realistic with my artwork as I spent years in art school doing that and have zero patience or desire for that style. At this time I still just create for myself as I have been an artist in many areas my whole life and ran a photography business pre digital and pre social media and then in its infancy before my greatest creation of being a mom to 3. I really don't know if I want to go down that avenue again of running a business and be multiples heads of it. HOWEVER...I still must create and I just do it on my own terms for my slice of the world. Kudos to all the creators out there that share online the wealth of knowledge so others can create too...that's been a refreshing sight to see as it used to be that artists weren't always so kin to do so.
