    I've grown up believing they were goggles, however i'm not completely convinced. The ones he has seems like shop glasses because of the temples, which don't usually protect against wind in the way aviation goggles do. But shop glasses essentially never have a full rim on the bottom, meaning that they would have to be normal glasses. Then again, I don't believe they make any single lens prescription glasses... I guess i'm on team "general purpose eyewear"

    He only wears goggles because Mario Kart is a racing game, and goggles make more sense than glasses. The eBay listing was trying to get as many tags covers for their "safety galsses". Big wrap around goggles was just an aesthetic choice

    I always thought it made more sense for gim to be wearing goggles because he is a flying character. And about toad, he is a giant mushroom because he probably is Peach's bio-WMD to rid the mushroom King dom of its original people: goombas, as suggested in Game Theory's episode about them.

    Credit where it's due: You are really passionate about this. I'm one of "those" people who was never really into Mario, although Mario Kart 7 for 3DS was a top-notch game, so I don't really know. But it explicitly says "specs" in one game and that means glasses according to UK Google. Although I'm sure it's more than possible that the game studio's have changed many times and therefore so has whether they're glasses or goggles. So I'd recommend finding when he was introduced and what studio made that game and check if it says glasses or goggles in either that first game or the next few Mario games that studio made.
    Really interesting video though, thanks J.J.

  • @Electroshockist
    @Electroshockist 2 года назад +5

    I've always thought of lakitu as kind of a pudgy/nerdy character, yet I've always called his "specs" goggles even though I kind of see them as a mix; some sort of swimming goggle/glasses combo.
    I only really started getting into video games when the 3d games were already out, so that might have something to do with my interpretation.

  • @maxis2k
    @maxis2k 6 лет назад +2

    The Answer: Lakitu, like every other character in the Mario series, has been redesigned dozens of times by different artists. And they make minor changes on the whim of the artist or games director. Miyamoto himself has changed tons of things about Mario based on how he feels at the time (see Yoshi's shoes or Peach's lips). So really, there's no conspiracy here. Nintendo doesn't care about design accuracy as much as the fanbase does.
    Also, there's lots of cartoon characters who have glasses without being a nerd. But since Lakitu was developed in Japan, you have to point out that they have very different standards. There are thousands of anime characters who wear glasses but are not stereotypical nerds/eggheads. Because Japan just has different views of glasses than the west does. Of course they do use them to signify nerds sometimes, but they generally add swirls to the glasses as well as an eccentric/shy personality to the character wearing the glasses. In other words, Japan puts character traits more into the personality and less into the outward appearance of the characters. This leads to some really weird design ideas westerners can't generally recognize, including with Mario characters. Like Wendy's big lips or Luigi's strange poses.
    And as someone who is working to get into the animation industry, I kind of feel insulted you lumped "everyone" into a box. Yes, these stereotypes exist. But not everyone follows them. And the use of these stereotypes is not because of a lack of imagination from the artists (though it can be for some). It is more that the most successful characters are designed to fit the preconceptions of the audience they are aimed at. Many of these stereotypes come from early works like Warner Bros cartoons, who were characterizing real life people, from famous Hollywood actors to World War 2 generals to other cartoon characters. These became so well known that they became the stereotypes we now know today. And so 75 years later, when someone wants to make a cartoon character who is a scientist, they have to conform to the standard. Unless they have multiple seasons to develop a character through other means, such as Hank Hill in King of the Hill, who doesn't fit the stereotype at all. There's entire episodes about Hank mocking nerds and worrying his son is becoming one. And Smithers isn't a nerd or egghead towards anything except dolls. I'm only pushing this so hard because you were making some REALLY sweeping generalizations in this video...
    Anyway, blah blah, from a design standpoint, I don't think Lakitu wore either when he was originally created. His original design in Super Mario Bros 1 on the NES just had him with green shading around his eyes. This is a common technique artists use, especially western artists, to be able to draw quick eyes. And it also really helped you notice his eyes in the small NES sprite. As time went on however, designers gave Lakitu glasses. Then over time, his headgear changed to goggles, based on the game he was in and the designers mood. These were made possible by having more detailed character models. In Mario Kart, he wears both depending on the activity he's doing.

    I've always believed that Lakitu is more of a race in the Mario franchise. Like, there's not just one of them. It's shown in the newest MarioKart that while playing as Lakitu, there's still another Lakitu acting as the camera/track-putter-onner. I agree with JJ's idea of design, I think the idea of Lakitu was originally designed with aviator goggles to signify that he's a flying character, but throughout the game the designers just kind of forgot about that, which meant some Lakitus had glasses. In the franchise, some Lakitus have goggles, some have specs. I think a simple resolution is that there's multiple Lakitus, just like how there's multiple Koopas, Birdos, Bloopers, etc.

    This is so useless yet so amazing and entertaining, J.J. is my favorite RUclipsr due to the way he ask and answers questions that very few people ask or gives much thought to, and makes five minute long videos diving into their histories, evidence for many cases, and finishes by asking for audience input. He is also a good satirist (in my opinion) and is one of the few people I can think of that could smoothly talk about video games, cartoons, and random/fun facts as much as he discusses politics, demographics, symbolism, history, and other such topics of (somewhat) importance.
    He is also the only person I can think of that can pull off a Nietzsche mustache. Also, you did a few videos on terrible flags as well as about twenty videos about Canada (as a geography nerd these videos really fascinate me), can you do a video about Canada's province and territory flags? Some are descent (Quebec and Ontario) while others are kinda ugly (British Columbia as well as Newfoundland and Labrador(which is a shitty province name for a list in my opinion)) I am kinda interested what you think about them.

      Clark Kent has glasses as part of a disguise. Hank Hill I would say has glasses to convey a general nerdishness. Hans Moleman has glasses because he'd old. Peter Griffin is probably the best counter-example, since he's not nerdy or smart or old, just a buffoon.

  • @louisiananlord17

    Growing up I always thought it was either spectacles or goggles. But your analysis has proven that he switches in-between goggles and specs. And glasses can be worn in cartoonery by non-nerdy characters. But character props may evolve and change just as the character does. The real question for Mario lore-lovers is Lakitu a Koopa or a whole another species. 👓☁️

    @3:59 Lakitu wears glasses because he drops Spiny eggs at random rather than throw them directly at Mario, which he could do if he could see well. All the other enemy sprites attack Mario directly, such as the Hammer Brothers, but they don’t wear corrective lenses (or maybe they *DO* wear contacts but how could we ever tell?) Programming the action of the sprite in the game influenced the design of the character.

    I think he's wearing glasses during the early years then Nintendo switch to have him wear goggles from time to time. Because in the early cartoon series (The Super Mario Bros. Show) he was wearing glasses. Everytime when he took them off he was nearly blind. So if they're glasses or goggles, it must be prescription eyewear.l of sorts.

    There is a Odyssey novelization? Also, add fishing to Lakitu’s odd list of hobbies and jobs.

    I always assumed he was wearing goggles... I probably just subconsciously associated it with what he does (fly around).
    Maybe he wears glasses normally, but goggles if he is doing an activity in which his glasses may fall off?

    Wait. Lakitu attacks from a distance. Maybe he wears glasses (he is drawn with glasses) to emphasize that he won't (wouldn't) dare get near you because then you might break his glasses.
    Basically, Lakitu is a ***** and the glasses help emphasize that. Or Mario is a bully, and Lakitu is scared of him but still supports Bowser as best he can--attacking from a distance. Either way you look at it, glasses make sense.
