    I had a Gerber combat knife in 1967. Lost it in a firefight in January 68. My folks sent me another one. When I left my unit, I gave it to my squad leader. When I located him 40 years later, he said he lost his also it in a firefight. Both knives were lost in the I corps area, between GioLihn and ConThien and had my name, usmc and service number engraved on them. Sure would be wonderful if one of those knives would show up.

      Thanks for sharing that Awesome story, David! Welcome Home, Sir… and thank you for your service 🫡 I just started collecting them… I’ll keep an eye out on the market… that would be the coolest find ever!! What if some old NVA soldier has it, and stored it so the leather survived intact lol. That would be nuts

      @to3ta64 Thank you sir. I carried my first gerber on my belt and unfortunately, the knife fell out of the sheath. When I received my 2nd knife, I secured it to my flak jacket, handle up, with a blanket roll strap. That was more secure. After I gave that knife to my squad leader I assume that he carried it on his belt and subsequently lost it. The sheath just wasn't very secure under strenuous situations if it was kept on the belt. The knife was incredibly sharp. It could cut 3 to 4 inch bamboo with one stroke. A good knife does give one an added sense of security.
      Your video was excellent. Thank you for your response.

      Lost mine in Nam too. Also engraved-w/blued blade. (Actually, it was stolen-off my harness by a CIDG)

    Hi
    The staples in the 1967 sheath are from Boyt Harness Company who made all the sheaths for the USMC Ka-Bar and US Navy Mark 2 knives. All military leather sheaths had the staples and in some cases, double stitching.

    I really like the direction that they went with with that knife, back in 1974 btw!!!

    I noticed the snaps on the sheaths changed sides also. I remember when I was a kid, about 12, my brother had one of those. I really wanted one, but wound up getting the shorter version when I went into the Army. I carried it for about 16 years, and passed it on to a friend on his way to Iraq for our first visit. I think he carried it on to Afghanistan and other places before he passed it on. To my knowledge, it made it to Hondo/Nicaragua, Panama and then the middle east. No telling where it has gone to since.

    Awesome collection. Now all consumers have to do is get Gerber to put these back into production already!. I really like the early 80's Mark II up into 1990. I have the black one in 420HC I think I got it in 2008. I like all the other versions better.

    I hope I can find one at a vintage store or state sale for cheap. At a vintage store I found a wwll German paratrooper knife for 40$! It's real but I'm not sure where to get it appraised.

      I had one some years ago, sold by an outdoor stores that was going out of business (I think I paid $60 for it). I gave it to my son and someone stole it out of hit tent when he was camping. I should have kept it.

    Was watching a former Seal show his knives and he had one of the late models but it reminded me that I had some old Gerber in a box. Turns out, after looking at this video, it's one of the early models, number 005160. It's not as nice as yours and has no sheath. What year is it from, 68 it looks like.

    • @estatesalerelics1967
      @estatesalerelics1967  5 месяцев назад

      @mrweeby1961 Yes, based on that production number, it would be from 1968.
