Dr., your video of today really turned a rainy, muggy, rather dismal day into one of enrichment. Who would ever broach this as a subject? You woke me up to these fully functional, grand and aesthetic inclined trains I was privileged to have ridden on at least on in Northern Michigan to where they quietly disappeared and in their stead -- mundane elevators.

I can remember when I was a young child,my parents took me to dogpatch Arkansas.there was a amusement park, with hillbilly theme, and fresh trout they stocked in a cold stream that ran thru the park. They had a small incline railway that transported the parks guest to and from the upper parking lot to parks entrance. Silver dollar city Branson mo. Has incline railway technology incorporated into some of the rides too.

I grew up in Pgh and still visit family there about 4 times a year. I was up on Mt Washington at the end of April at a celebration dinner for my daughter who just graduated PITT. She lives 2 blocks off Carson just around the corner from all the action. What interests me is the hillside under the incline and the inaccessible areas under the lookouts at the top, but there’s no easy way to get an up close look. Best would be from McCardle, but you just can’t pull over and park and inspect the mountain from there. When I drive by, I go slow and it looks like the rocks are more like the stone blocks of a giant building that’s been overgrown. Recently I walked around downtown so I could see where Grant street was lowered many feet. The original higher street level line is visible on some of the older buildings like the Pittsburgh jail by the bridge of sighs. So much hidden history! Bummer I didn’t have time for an original Primantis sandwich in the strip when I was there last. I’ve been craving one so much!

It’s the complexity and engineering beauty of these supposedly mundane things like trolley parks and incline railways that lets me understand how much is being covered up!
By the way Michelle have you looked into all the ice rinks and roller blade rinks that seemed to be around in the pre World War 2 era?
Sorry if you already covered this and I haven’t caught up yet but I just noticed how everywhere seemed to have these rinks until about WW2 and then they started dying out suddenly?
Even my little mining town in the north of England had one nearby. Same as the local town parks and bowling greens or putting greens, they all suddenly started to get torn down after World War 2 and nothing was put in its place? 🤔

Their storyline states it was used to take coal mine workers from the top to the bottom. I also found “coke ovens” in this area. Beautiful works of art. Here in Switzerland we have lots of these. Short ones and longer ones that go up steep mountains. In the city of Zurich there are 2, one short on that goes from Central up the hill to the university. Another one from Römerhof up the hill to the Dolder area. Oh yes and a 3rd that I can’t remember the name of. In the Italian part of Switzerland there is a quite odd one that goes from Locarno to Orsellina. It passes by a VERY interesting old church called Madonna del Sasso. This was the location of a meeting of high level politicians that led to The Pact of Locarno in 1925 in an attempt to prevent a 2nd WWW. It obviously failed. Here in Switzerland they are called funicular. There are many many more. Great topic and very interesting. 🙏
