Mystery dirt

I noticed this oddly colored patch of dirt in my yard. At first I thought it may have been dog poop but when I scraped it with the scooper a very fine cloud came from it, almost like smoldering smoke. The dirt (or whatever it is) has a reddish color that doesn't match any of the soil in my yard.
