- Here I walk through each insulation I considered, and the thought process behind my final choice. There are many pros & cons to each option, so this may help you with your final choice! After an overview of insulation types, I show how I insulated my van with 3M Thinsulate, and what I learned along the way.

We are Linnea and Akela. In May, 2020 I purchased our 2016 Ram ProMaster, Togo, to become our full-time home! With this van build, I am using my stubbornness and drive to show individuals that they, too, can convert a campervan BY THEMSELVES and ON A BUDGET, with a lot of learning, rolling up the sleeves, and getting to work.
Our goal here is to inspire individuals to chase their dreams. To break from any societal limitations and live the life they truly desire.

It's awesome to see a woman doing all of this. I'm a 57 year old woman that has never really even picked up a power tool. You have really encouraged me. I have actually installed a skylight and two solar panels on the roof. I have a long way to go but it makes me feel like I can do anything.
I am 61 yo Male and I Love these video I am learning alot from you!
My used van came the the wall void already filled with rigid insulation. But I like the Thinsulate concept? Works great in winter clothes?
im converting a ram promaster right now and your videos are super helpful!! thanks for showing your process :)
I am so glad to know that they are helpful! Good luck with your build and reach out if you have any questions :)
I'm also converting a promaster as well..
I am too!
I found ya on Tik Tok and came here and watched all the videos in order. I am totally vested now LOL. So fun watching you achieve a dream! Someday, i hope to solo travel too. For now, just a working single mama banking up the money to do so :)
Haha wow thank you so much! I’m happy to have you along for the ride :) reach out if you ever need some solo travel tips!
Your hours of research is going to helping me by just watching this 15 minutes video thank you. This is exactly what i wanted easy to install and non toxic.
I am so glad that my videos are helping! Good luck with the installation :)
Hi Linnea, I was on the shelf about buying a van because of the daunting task of converting it but I binge watched all of you video's and decided to bite the bullet. I'm flying from NY to FL this Thursday to pick up my 2020 Promaster 2500, 159" hightop and I'm very grateful to you for your honesty, humility, determination and for taking the time to show the rest of us that it can be done, even with no prior experience. You are the best and I wish you much happiness on your travels.
Really admire your hard work, commitment & patience. I do wood work as hobby and I know it requires patience and hard work. Awesome work.
Wow thank you!
Hey Linnea!
I am about to do my insulation too - same stuff! Thinsulate and 3M 90. I can't wait for the quiet. On the interstate it's so loud I can't hear podcasts without cranking the volume!
Q: what places did you end up using double thickness?
Couple things I just read in case it helps:
Can use tape around the edges to make sure it doesnt fall off the ceiling or walls (maybe vibration will do it?)
Don't forget to do the "headliner", right above the front seats, in that storage nook. Or the front doors. This guy lists all the places to insulate, I will put the link in the next comment.
Just saw this! I hope the insulating is going well!
I really appreciate the detail in your videos! My partner and I are building out a sprinter. B/c I had the time, I did all the insulation and sound deadening - it's been great rewatching the parts that we've already done and then looking to your videos for what's to come! The only thing I would add to this step is *gloves* - not only because the edges of vans are sharp (as seen by your gash) but cutting all that thick thinsulate gave me hot spots/pre-blisters on my hands!
Just dropping a line to say you're awesome. I love your dog. And i dig how straight forward you are. Starting my build this January and im loving watching you get yours going.
I appreciate this comment a lot, thank you! And good luck with your build, have fun, and reach out any time!
One of the most informative and helpful build series’ that I’ve come across - thank you so much for sharing all of your insights and giving me hope for the rest of our build!! 😭🤩🙏
This is the first full insulation video that teaches not just a short of before and after. After watching your video, I feel confident that I can insulate the van that I buy with the same material that you used. Thank you. Girl power 💪
That's amazing - I'm so happy to hear I could be of some help. Go get it, Girl!
You just helped me make my decision on insulation. I've been writing down pros and cons of every insulation imaginable and it had come down to thinsulate or wool. I didn't know about wool attracting bugs so yeah.. Insulate it is!
Best Thinsulate video I have found
I started binging on your videos last night and here I am!! You totally motivated me, you make it look easy...it's freakin on, I'm so doing this!👍
I appreciate your straightforward approach with information. It's clean and clear, makes me feel more confident that I will be successful in my van conversion. Thank you!
You are outstanding !! I learned from you about( how little that I know about it) insulation. I was going to use the wool ,but after what I learned from you about the downside of wool it is out. I did not think of using 3M thinsulate. But I'm going to try it. Note: on your wiring use what is called SJ cord ( it is sold in 2 wire(12 volt) and 3 wire(120 volt) it is like a drop cord( that use to plug in your tools) I want to thank-you for teaching a old dog new tricks!
John Grant well thank you!! I do know that people love the wool, those are just a few things I gathered from my research that I was nervous about! Unfortunately I already purchased my wiring - you’ll have to let me know if I should change something when I post my video about it!
Hmm. Have you thought about a vapor barrier? A. To prevent moisture
B. Keep anther air layer for better R value.
Hello Linnea/Akela!! What ur sharing with us is sooo AWESOME of u, I know u know how much ur build videos r helping others, but I honestly have to say...u r seriously helping me understand a great deal more! I appreciate u sooo much! Thank u
I've watched some of your videos and every video I say "omg she's amazing" pretty much the whole time. Hahaha. Thanks for sharing your build. It has helped me get started overhauling my E-250. I'm currently filling about 20 holes in the floor and about to start insulation. Cheers!
This video gave me a lot of insulation. Thank you
Hi, I never found you on tik tok, I believe it's a age thing! I'm enjoying the build so far, especially the maxxfan episode which was my go to video for installing mine just last Saturday. We have different products here in England, for example the main insulation to be used here is "recycled plastic insulation" which I'll be fitting in a couple of weeks, I've got the floor to sort out this coming weekend.
I have a Fiat Ducato which is the same vehicle as yours but different badges and probably engine (2.3 diesel).
Looking forward the next episode, cheers. X
Wow, thank you so much for this amazing feedback! I am really happy to hear that you were able to avoid some of the mistakes that I made! Very interesting to hear about the products you have - I watched a lot of videos from England when I was deciding on my rust prevention process, and I ran into that, realizing a lot of the things used we didn’t really have here. Good luck with your floor next! Mine took me a lot longer than expected :) best of luck with the build!
Omg that looks too much easier than what I did... I struggled with foam boards and spray foam for weeks! It was cheaper but honestly, I spent so much on buying more spray foam it probably cost the same in the end... haha. Love your videos!
Hey Linnea & Akela!!! I believe EVERY decision that you have made so far is directly aligning with the things that I plan to do. Thank you for explaining all that you have for insulation and Thank you so much for sharing. 😎
Of course!!
I been a Rver Class C girl and have owned 3. My last one I sold before Covid was a 2020 Jayco. I decided 3 years ago that I now will drive a class B. I always wanted Havelock Wool, but U have made me re-think about that. The only thing about that spray your using is that it's cancer chemicals!! 3m company is health hazardous! I will go another way installing the thinsulate. Thanks for this video it shows how to do very clearly. Thx
Enjoying your van build so much that I’m trying to find a good reason that I need to buy and do the same. Miss my beautiful blond GSD and watching yours brings a lot of smiles as I see the same mannerisms.
Haha maybe a van is in your future then! Thank you very much :)
Also, I know how those dogs stay in the heart forever... I am happy that you can catch a few glimpses of your own GSD every so often through my videos❤️
I am so sad when I see soooo many people spend so much time and money insulting and leaving so many thermal bridges that will more than likely lead to condensation build up introducing water into your wall cavities. I love that people are DIYing there is just so many popular videos that may not be good examples for how to do things to help with longevity. Spray adhesive contains many of the chemicals that you may be trying to avoid. Some of the sustainable insulations options you mentioned are great for stationary buildings but not for moving vehicles. The R-value listed is based on controlled conditions and are often not valid for the way people install the insulation in vans, which is something that companies unfortunately do not advertise but hide in the fine print. I hope you had many good years with your van! Keep building and designing!
You are so adorable and funny.
I wonder how much mold and mildew have built up in those vans with demin insulation.
That 3M SM600L is great stuff. I used it in my van with 5/8" high density rubber floor mat for sound deadening..It's been six years. No mold, mildew, smell and the 3M Super 98 did not dry up and turn to dust....
Watching your subscriber count climb, congrats on your van and your RUclips channel. take care. Dave
Thank you Dave, I appreciate it!
thank you-thank you-for this good insulation advice/i was trying to decide what to use-i am going to insulate my van -this is very helpful to me/i was doing a lots of research too/wow-you help so many people find a good-good product/where did you order it from-you did not leave a link/thanks much
Wow, great video! Nicely done! I had so many questions at the start but you pretty much answered them all. Best RUclips video yet on van insulation!
Just started watching your channel with the van build you are amazing
Thank you for sharing your amazing life with all of us.Also I love your play list!
I am going your way with insulation.
After watching several videos, I’m gonna go with the Thinsulate. Thanks for posting, and sweet pup! 🐶
You filled those drain holes with that caulk the guy left you. Spray foam would've been the key.
Absolutely love your build. Keep it up young lady
I wish I had seen your build series before i built out my Promaster. I was afraid to do my own wiring, fans, and windows. Could have saved a bundle if I’d seen your videos first! Thanks for the informative, inspiring videos!
Hi, love you videos!! Wondering if you had enough insulation or too much? I have a 2019 3500 Promaster 159” ext. Want to make sure I order the right amount. Thanks for helping me make my insulation choice!!!
Yes!! Thank you!! Your video tipped the scale for me--Thinsulate it is!!
I live in a warm area and will go with thinsulate too
I found you from tic tok I will watch your videos tonight
Thank you!
Thanks for all these videos! Helping me a lot with my build
Love ❤️ your dog! Thanks for sharing your van build 😀
I am soooo glad I found you here!!!
Thank you!! It's a video made for us!! Women kind haha!!
I already love you.
Welcome!! haha this is so sweet, thank you!
Thanks for the Thinsulation tip! Bought the thinsulation off your link. Hope it helps you!
Love watching your van build! Curious, what are those reflective square pieces on the panels before you put down the thinsulate?
I believe they’re a sound deadener, usually contractors put them in their vans. Nothing important really
Is that EZ Cool?
Interstitial condensation is condensation which occurs between layers of the construction, i.e. 'inside' the roof, wall or floor elements. Interstitial condensation can cause deterioration
I enjoyed all of the information of the insulation installation. (say that 3 X's fast) Good job young lady.
I am so glad you enjoyed it!
hi Linnea, if you have time to answer two questions please, i would really appreciate it... one - what is the silver piece in the center of each area under your thinsulate and why ? two - does it matter if you put the black part inwards or outwards cause my thought was to glue the white part to a thin piece of wood and just plop the wood pieces onto each area...that way no glue needed on the van + easy removal. cheers !
Thank you!
Linnea, I love your videos and always fall back on them for my build, question do you remember have an issue with your ceiling insulation falling down after gluing them with the 3m 90 adhesive?
Thanks for the video.
I like your way but I might prefer to cover all bars, the entire door, and not just where you can put that stuff inside. A good deal would not be touching metal but enough to secure it. I have yet to see any RUclips van builds do that. It would certainly provide more insulation because of no gaps. In addition, my securing method very well might not be glue but some method where I can remove for maintenance or replacement.
Yes, putting huge sheets of insulation down all sides with open gaps behind it, will reduce cabin space a bit. I am willing to accept that. The condensation sealing argument: I agree with the concept that condensation prevention primarily from good ventilation. Sealing should be done to prevent rainwater entry, of course, where necessary.
How much insulation did you end up using? Was the one roll you bought enough?
Just came across this video. Wondering how the insulation has held up over the years. Just planning to do the same.
Loving your videos I’m watching them all!! I’m at the same stage as you were on this video and couldn’t figure out whether to do the wiring or insulation first. Do you mind me asking if you would chose insulation first if you were doing it again??? Thanks!!!
Great idea with cutting out strips to stuff instead of pulling out pieces to stuff.
Curious - how many linear feet of Thinsulate did you get, how much of that did you have left over? I'm weighing all these same insulation options right now that you did last summer.
I just wanted to say you have a beautiful GSD also the Van pretty cool great work keep up the good job thanks for the videos
Thank you very much!
@@Linneaandakela Your welcome have a fantastic day
did you ever research hemp fiber insulation? if so what did you find out?
Came from Tiktok you earned a new fan❤️
Thank you!
Great info on insulation! Thanks for sharing. You are inspirational😊 One question though, did you use it to insulate the floor?
Hi Linnea how much thinsulate you used in total.? And you bought from Amazon?
how much did you ended up using, looking at getting some for my new van but not sure how much indeed 159, tall roof like yours.
Hello Linnea. Did you have enough insulation left over to double up anywhere? And if you did, where?
Wonderful work, keep up the good work!
You could use the sliding door holes as storage. Just frame it out some what
Great Work!!! thanks for the links.
So umm question. Did u end up adding 2 layers on the roof? Also...are you putting a wall up (with a door) closing off the front and insulating that wall? Tons of heat and cold will come from the cab. Just askin
I did not! I didn't have enough left over to do so. And I will no be putting a door up, but I will be doing a curtain
Géniale félicitation grandiose pour le bus la rouille vas arriver car elle ne vas plus respirer avec le froid et le chaud 🥵 ne jamais faire comme cette vidéo 😅😅
Curious how well the insulation has worked in your van the past few years. I saw in your most recent videos that you are wintering in Wisconsin. Does it seem to be working well or is there anything you would do differently? I live in Iowa and plan on wintering in a van here for a few years before hitting the road, and our winters here can be pretty brutal!
Hi, señorita, new subscriber here, I have a 2014 promaster and I'm almost through fixing dents and painting the exterior and when I'm done I don't know if I should sell it or convert it but you should know that you are inspiring me to go ahead and convert it 😊...
Hello! Congrats on all the hard work you've decided to take on! I hope you have a wonderful build :) Enjoy all of the ups and downs!
@@Linneaandakela 🙏❤️
Thanks for the video. It’s very helpful and gave me the nudge I needed to go ahead with Thinsulate. Question: did you also later use any kind of reflexive or other sound proofing material? I’m pretty sure you only used the Thinsulate but just double checking. Thanks again!
Great information, thanks 😊
You should add some curtains behind the driver and passenger seat.
❤ no toxic !
Hi! I noticed you used two different 3M adhesive sprays. One day permanent one doesn’t. Would you use both types again or do you like one over the other? I notice one says adheres to metal surfaces the other doesn’t. My van conversion guy just had to cancel on me so starting on my own. Your videos are helping so much! Thanks for the great content. Luv the music too. T
Hi Tricia! They honestly both worked great. It had been weeks before I installed anything over the insulation and even with driving across the country and doing other work on the van not a single piece came off the metal!
Currently building out a high roof extended length Ford Transit with my partner and this was so helpful! I was just curious how many feet of Thinsulate your roll was, and did you have much leftover? Just want to make sure I get the right amount!
Great info video!
Curious how you like the thinsulate and what you might have done differently?
KooL dog ,,,, great work … I’m following your lead
Well done!
Hi Linnea. Love your videos! I'm planning, pricing and searching for a suitable 159 Promaster. I wanted to ask if you have found that the 200w kit is enough for your needs? I will be traveling solo too, but I do plan a water pump and water heater. Thanks!
Hey!
I would say yes. Although I would add another battery (probably will in the future). I get plenty of power but when I have multiple appliances running I do need to monitor the battery and make sure it doesn’t get too low! Hopefully that helps, and I hope you have a great time on the build and with your upcoming adventures!!
Enjoying your very informative videos. We are a week into our Promaster 136 conversion. How much thinsulate did you have left after the initial installation?
Thanks Tom & Nancy from following walkers world. 👍👍✌️
Thank you so much for your videos. They are really helpful as I build my van. I've heard the Thinsulate doesn't smell, bid you have any problems with off gassing or smell from the adhesive? Thank you in advance.
Great videos. They are really informative and entertaining. If you ever want to sell that van, you'll have thousands of interested buyers, who know how diligent you and Akela were in every aspect of this. I know that isn't your plan, but if you did sell it through an auction at the end of the build, it would probably go for a shocking amount.
Just so you know, the Instagram link on your "about" page isn't working. If you want it to work, for people you might need to do something.
Thank you! I will go ahead and fix that right now. I appreciate you, Steve!
These videos are awesome
This is one of the best van builds I've seen on RUclips and I signed it funny that girl's name their stuff after guys and guys name their stuff at the girls it's just funny to me I like your choice of insulation I like your choice of doggy excetera excetera excetera👍👌👏😜🐝😎
Love your video, how is the 3m thinslate in cold winters?
Hey! I went to order Thinsulate from your link provided above, but the link is broken. Turns out there are many variations to choose from. Can you shoot your over?
But, but even 3M says... "If you are insulating a Van, we do not recommend this particular type of insulation for the Ceiling, Walls and Doors. We highly recommend the 3M SM600L for this application. 3M AU4002-5 sound and thermal insulation engineered for vehicles. 60" wide, scrim on both sides. 1 linear foot is 5 square feet. Material comes compressed from 3M. The material will expand to 1 inch. Thinsulate is FMVSS 302 certified (federal motor vehicle safety standard). Delivers more acoustic absorption per unit weight vs. competitive products. Helps customers meet mass reduction goals Non-woven sound absorbing fibers create a quieter vehicle environment. Hydrophobic. If you are insulating walls and ceilings of a van we recommend SM600L. Recommend using 3M 90 Adhesive Spray."
Hey there!
I used the product that they recommended. In the video I talk about it, and in the link you will see that it takes you right to the 3M SM600L. Also, I used the 3M adhesive and it worked out really well. I hope this helps!
@@Linneaandakela Robert thought he was a genius but, your reply was on rocket scientist level. Haaaaa. Take that little Robbie, sounds like Bobbie, go find another hobby.
It’s non toxic but certainly the strong spray adhesive is toxic right? Was that a concern?
this confirms what i need...one day.
So I can see that this is a old video but I would still like to throw my2 cents. I love that you did do your research but One insulation you did not mention is rockwool it is insect and rodent deterrent does not retain moisture or harvest mold , Has a great R value , is a amazing sound barrior, way better than thinsulate and is WAY cheaper than thinsulate
Great input - thanks
As always 👍👍👍👏👏👏
What made your decision on not putting windows on the back doors?
Can I ask why you didn't use recycled plastic insulation?
Insulation is important especially traveling Canada a alaska
Is thinsulate flame resistant? I know havelock wool is, along with water-resistant and sound-deadening, so we’re currently deciding between havelock wool & thinsulate
15:21 where did you purchase the thinsulate insulation?
Great work! I thought wool would be my answer but after watching your video I may change my mind. I missed it but did you purchase the 159wb?
Nope! I believe mine is the 136. I have heard that the 156 is great though, and doesn’t change much about steering or turning.
