    I can definitely see the potential of Sephiroth of turning against jenova but for more selfish reasons. He wants to be in full control I still see him as a neutral evil Character.

      Bro was lied too his whole life by Hojo and went mad due to believing he was a monster since he was told his mother was Jenova. He needs someone to show him the truth, take him to see Lucrecia *his real mother* then at least let him realize he is like Cloud a human who was experimented on and then he can work to fix some of his mistakes before he dies.

    It’s not impossible to redeem Sephiroth. I mean Vegeta was redeemed and he did far worse things than Sephiroth. The trick is the execution.

      @@Melterer Vegeta literally killed people to either gain more power or just for the sheer thrill of it, or to satisfy his own ego. And he killed far more people than Sephiroth…and he still got redeemed. So Sephiroth getting redeemed if executed well doesn’t seem like a stretch, let alone the worst thing in fiction.

    • @Melterer
      @Melterer 11 месяцев назад

      @KingNazaru All that is fine, to say anything veheta did was worse than sephiroth I just disagree is all. They both killed for selfish, and ridiculous reasons. Vegetas redemption worked because dbz story and world are different. It's not bad, in my opinion though if you redeem sephiroth, the story loses a huge part of its value based on its core themes of power and loss.

    • @KingNazaru
      @KingNazaru 11 месяцев назад +5

      @@Melterer Not really, we still have Jenova as the main antagonist. And Sephiroth would still have to deal with the guilt of the horrible things he had done so these themes would still be intact from a different perspective. As for the Vegeta thing, yeah he still did far worse than Sephiroth. He was committing genocide even when he was a little kid and conquered planets. The Dragonballs only undid a limited amount of his crimes.

    • @Melterer
      @Melterer 11 месяцев назад

      @KingNazaru I don't see how anything he did is any worse or better than what sephiroth did. Did they want to kill planets? Yup. Unreseemable. Its works in dbz because the story is worse. If you don't think the story is worse in dbz, that's fine, we will just have to agree to disagree and enjoy the ride.

    To me redemption doesn't mean "turning good again", but in Sephiroth's case more like "let go, accept, allow yourself to die, rest".. I think he has to die in the end, but also to be in peace. The memories and negative emotions both Cloud and Sephiroth are having towards each other, are keeping Sephiroth alive. And I think, only if they both learn to let go of this, then he will finally be able to die and dissolve into the livestream, for good and forever. Personally, I would love to have an ending like that.

    Thank you for this video! Tbh I didn't get why everyone on twitter instantly interpreted the interview as Sephiroth becoming a good guy, I don't really think that's what he meant either. In my opinion Sephiroth doesn't need redemption, he's just that good of a villain it'd be a little bit sad to see him suddenly become good again...but like you said, if it's executed well it might work...either way I can't wait to get my hands on the game in February

    Well, the Japanese version does seems to imply that there's a good version of Sephiroth in Edge of Creation. Whenever that's the Sephiroth that was from post-AC and reformed or an alternate past Sephiroth who find out his horrible future is up for debate.

  • @MysterEeee
    @MysterEeee 11 месяцев назад +6

    For the fans who say or don't consider that the developers political and spiritual beliefs have informed their intent for the Remake project just need to experience this interview. Admiring or popularizing a character that OG deves believe is clearly designed as evil says something to those same devs. I think whatever the conclusion they came to about this audience empathy towards evil I think is core to the changes, meta and overall self awareness of the Remake project.
    Redemption, it seems, is a noticeably and growing human concept amongst the fan base from storytellers. What does this mean? Why this yearning for redemption in the collective unconscious? Could it be that all of us have shown an inability to heed blatant warnings of doom (arguably OG FF7 can be labeled this) and instead easily leaned into more self-destructive behavior? Do we all unconsciously desire for a higher power to reveal itself to us and pull us from our cancerous behavior? Was it the death of truly spiritual "parents" that put us on this path? Was it an outside, an "alien", influence that we just aren't properly equipped to resist? Or is self destruction just a ticking time bomb within our very nature? Are we worthy of redemption?
    I submit these same questions apply very much to the story of FF7 and that Sephiroth is the main proxy/avatar for answering and exploring these questions of humanity for the devs.

  • @zekiel2533

    Seph might be able to be redeemed. But not to be good per se but to understand the importance of life when he's defeated. Sephiroth is disconnected from his humanity because of the lies hojo wrote and told him in his youth. Ever crisis shows a teenage seph who is still leaning towards good.
    That's why I hope he meets lucrecia because he'll learn the truth about who he actually is. Not originally a monster but human.

      He only knows what Jenova tells him. He is not even listening to the planet, according Aerith. Who is the real puppet? That's the question I'm looking forward to. I do not trust the current narrative that Sephiroth is in control. From my perspective, that claim have always seemed baseless and forced. This trilogy will clarify things for me.

  • @lajazziamacklin8418

    I've been thinking about this question ever since VII Rebirth was revealed. I'd love to see Sephiroth turn over a new leaf and take a stand against Jenova. Remember in Crisis Core Reunion, Sephiroth read those notes Hojo had hid from him day and night, locking himself in the interior of that basement and then Genesis eventually lost his trust after he told him about his origins and Jenova herself, flooding his head with nothing but lies, causing him to snap. I'm afraid if Sephiroth gets redeemed, it's going to be REALLY difficult for me to see him as the antagonist he was always meant to be in my eyes IF he takes the famous 'antagonist-turned-hero' route in Rebirth. But if he does, I'll learn to live with it. I mean this man has done so many terrible things in his entire life, I can't see him turning from an antagonist to a hero quickly, especially after what he had done.
    Sephiroth, however, has taught me so many wonderful things about myself that I wasn't aware of. It's going to be difficult for me to see him suddenly turn into this 'wonderful hero' and throw away that famous antagonist role that he's been known for all these years. It just terrifies me very much right now that Square Enix would choose to make one of their famous characters a 'good guy' after everything he's ended up doing: murdering thousands upon thousands of innocent lives, taking Tifa's Dad away and killing Cloud's Mom.

  • @ConnieJasperson

    i always think Sephiroth is the quintessential "villain you love to hate." I use that analogy when teaching writing characters--you need to have an antagonist who is the hero in their story, and who has a reason to be there. It's hard to get invested in villain who is evil for the sake of evil. Kefka is a 2-dimensional villain, and the satisfaction of beating him was simply because it was a good boss fight. But interacting with Sephiroth is different, has meaning, makes you feel part of the story. And THAT is why this franchise is my favorite of all time.

  • @miki49
    @miki49 11 месяцев назад +2

    It’s rare to find that bad guy who’s just bad for the sake of it. They usually end up being more one note, but certain events they partake in could make them stand out. Even Kefka’s character as we know him was also the product of experimentation. Only one I can think of described this way is Luca Blight from Suikoden II (never actually played it myself, but I look forward to the remaster)

    I just want someone to show Sephiroth the full truth about his creation, even if its pointless. Then at least Sephiroth has a chance to be free of his madness instead of dieing without ever knowing who his real mother was. Seriously, I dont know why Vincent never tried to tell him in the original series. I loved him in Dirge of Cereberus but come on man tell the boy about his mom already!

  • @zephyr8072

    The developers have always insisted that Sephiroth is in control of Jenova and not the other way around but the fact remains that villain Sephiroth’s personality is completely different to hero Sephiroth’s, and his snap from aloof hero with a heart of gold to callous murderer is suspiciously fast.
    I’ve always thought of it as another personality taking over. Not Jenova, but not the “real” Sephiroth either. If that were ever revealed then in this sense Sephiroth doesn’t need to be redeemed, just saved.
