I lost my mom to cancer this year and my 5 year is very sporadic but I decided when I come upon the blank spaces the next year around I will write a memory of my mom in the blank space so those have a place to live
Hi James! I came across this video some time ago and returned to thank you because you inspired me to not ditch my 5 year journal. I have not Hobonichi but Leuchtturm one since 2020. I have been through a lot these last 2 years: ongoing health problems, constant surgeries, 2 heartbreaks and on top of that a war. I’m in Ukraine and still wake up sometimes from explosions in the mornings and from sirens in the nights. There was a time when I didn’t wanna document my life at all. But looking back, I realised that I’ve grown so much since 2020 and I can see that exactly thanks to my 5 year journal. Thank you for this video!
What an incredible comment to read! It’s wonderful to hear what journaling means in your life story and I’m so glad to hear you have documented such pivotal moments in your life. ❤️
And one more note for anyone afraid of falling behind: if and when that does happen, you don't have to do the whole catch-up in one session. I like to do 2 or 3 a night until I get caught up again. That's pretty manageable.
Completely agree with keeping it at arm's reach. This is my second year in mine, and it is so much more rewarding now that I can look back on last year's shenanigans.
I just ordered mine yesterday! I am an A6 and weeks user but decided to challenge myself to get the A5 for my 5 year journal. Thank you so much for your video ♥️
I love my 5 year journal. I have the A5 size and it's a little intimidating to fill the space but once I get started it's no problem and often I even spill over Obito the next page. For anyone who hates blank slots, I think it's a good idea to have a plan ahead of time for what to do about them. You can look up a newspaper article headline for that day. Look up the weather from that date and draw it in, or just put in a nice quote. It doesn't have to be all or nothing! Even if you didn't pick it up for a months, I think just get on the horse and try again :) You'll be glad you did.
Just about finished with year 1 of my diy 5yr in a Cafe Notes B6. I have had a number of occasions where I put off or forgot about it then had to back track but also days where I decided I didn’t need to back track (usually days that were so mundane I couldn’t remember them). Most of my blank spots were only a day or two roughly each month but I have about 5 weeks in Nov/Dec I was so busy/drained I just left blank and they will remain that way. I have loved it so far and am looking forward to doing even better in the upcoming second year.
I have this in an A5 starting on 22, and I find I go back and forth on how much I want to write. Eventually I think my kids will see and read it, and that was where I would do “code” for certain things. It’s been the hardest year of my life so I’m happy I have it. I wish I knew about it earlier though.
I'm so tempted by the 5 year hobo, but I know I'm pretty bad at keeping to stuff, so I just got my usual weeks journal, and I'm planning to try to build a habit writing everyday in that one before making the jump to a 5 year. (Plus, next year I'll be 30, so 30-35 is a nice satisfying chunk)
Hi James great video gorgeous journal! Just bought the 5 year Hobonichi and wanted to actually have a look at it while I’m waiting for it to arrive! Looks so chunky! Love it! Thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you for this video. I've been researching around a lot because i want to get one for myself and your video helped enormously! I thought to get the a5 but now im genuinely thinking a6 might be better. Not only cause its a little cheaper, but also because of what you said, its hard to commit so much and the small space will probably feel too big a lot of times. So i better small it down from the start. Never been into journaling before, so i expect to straggle a lot, but i want that feeling you get while flipping through your years of experience and life
I just started a 5 year this year and I am so excited to be finished with year 1 ad start on year 2. I can't wait to see you start on the last year!! How amazing and inspiring.
I have been debating on getting this journal type for a while now. I finally did it tonight and it is because of your journaling videos! Love your work. I think I was mostly encouraged and inspired to do it now, because you mentioned it almost tracking your days throughout the years. And ending 'curses' in a sense. The layout of the Hobonichi definitely affords an easier quick glance than a traditional journal. Thanks for sharing and always being transparent!
I just recently finished my first year of using my journal, it's really fun seeing how different other people's journaling styles are. I use mine very specifically for practicing writing in Gaelic so right now I'm limited on what to write based on how much Gaelic I know, lol. But there's been quite a few entries where I just wrote something in English if I really wanted to say it. I'm already able to look back and see that my entries are getting longer and my vocab has expanded a lot since the beginning. It really makes me want to keep studying harder to see where my writing will be by the time 2026 rolls around!
It's that time of year, and I'm researching what to buy from Hobonichi for 2025. I'm considering getting the 5-Year Techo and came across your post. I'm torn between the A6 (such a lovely size) and the A5 (larger, which might be better since I have a ton of things to write). After completing the A6, have you thought about switching to the A5? Great journal-your beautiful soul really shines through in it. Thank you for sharing
I loved this video! Your pages are so lovely and look so great with all the illustrations and photos. I bought a 5 year Hobonichi in 2021 on your recommendation and I'm so happy I did. It helped me journal consistently and I know that thanks to it I'll have so many more memories to look back on.
Love seeing all those photos in your pages! Really adds to the journaling. I kept a 10 year journal from 2008-2018 (so technically it was 11 years!) and the first 5 years I did really well keeping up with it, then *life happens* and I had a lot of gaps in the last 5 years. I'd love it to be completely filled but I'm also grateful for what is in there (my kids used it to draw in too, which is so fun to look back on now!) Since 2019 I have been using standard TN's and have enjoyed that. I'm pondering my choice for 2023 and whether to do a 5 year journal to have some years together again :) Oh and your comment about how many 5 year journals we have left in us... hahaha.... I have thought about that too!!
I'm so glad to discover you and your RUclips channel. I just ordered my Hobonichi 5 Year and it's because of you. I'm going to just jump in now and go from there. I do journal so I *might* copy snippets of journaling from my current journal to my new 5 year journal to have a complete 2022. You have inspired me and I thank you for that.
What a GREAT vid so Helpful, I've lost track of my Hobonichi Daily and then was discouraged, thanks to this vid I've picked it up again. I'm working backward with the help of my agenda and just go for the real highlights, this works well!! 😉💞 Love and Light from Europe ☀
I've kept a daily Hobo Cousin for a few years, so I thought I was ready for the 5 year, but I ended up not being able to maintain it :/ I did it for a 1.5 years, always getting flustered if I'd have to back-log a week or more, but once it got to a month that needed backlogging, I just ditched it. I love how beautiful it is and I was really excited to have it all in one place, but it ended up feeling more like a chore than a labor of love. BUT I love looking through yours, James!!
Thank you for this cool video. I knew about this journal some days ago and was thinking if I really need it or not cuz I don't like all this journalling stuff. But hobonichi hooked me and your video persuaded me to buy this perfect memory thing! Thanks a lot!
Wow.... This is so inspiring. I bought a 5 year hobonichi for next year and this video made me wanna start immediatly. So I drew up my first page for New Years Day. Thank you so much for your inspiration
love James I do not have a journal like that yet may be next year will get one we will see. Thanks for sharing and yeah is certainly a commitment but one you will be happy to have always to look back on.
Amazing art work in that journal ! And thanks for that lighthearted video - made my evening :-) I’m a first-timer from 2023 onwards. Wish me willpower hehe
The Tomoe River Paper won’t change until next year’s Hobonichi 2024 apparently. But I have noticed slight differences with some from last year and this year. They have included a sample with their Hobonichi 2023 which some of us will test with our fountain pens. Thank you for sharing this. I am one who find the 5 year techo challenging mainly for the time commitment as it doubled up with my “normal” journaling. And I did buy it as an excuse for something else too. But have appreciated the multiple year scan immensely.
Hi James, Thank you for a great video. When do you actually fill your right-hand pages? Just when you feel like it? Partially each year for 5 years? Other? I’m laughing now about your ‘how many before i die’ comment. I bought a 5-year to start 1 Jan, 2024 *because* in five years I will be the age my mother was when *she* died. My goal, or at least desire, is for my life to be 30 years longer than hers was-but if not, I’ll log all of the stuff about what I do, and how I feel physically if I get a crap diagnosis between now and 31 Dec. 2028.
Thank you :) partially each year, although some days I’ll do a whole page at once or nothing at all - no set rules. I’m going back through now and completing everything and it’s not super daunting so I think it all spread out nicely over the 5 years :)
Thanks for the video! I love seeing everything you do in this journal. I got an A5 5 year after watching your videos and I love it so much. I'm def one that has to go back and fill days after going a while without writing (ah, damn depression and long work hours lmao) and it can be a pain because I have memory issues, a big reason for wanting this journal, actually, but I'm thankfully addicted to oversharing on my tumblr blog so I can usually just pull from that when I can't remember how a day went xD. On days where I just have nothing to put down I usually toss a few stickers down, keeps it colorful at least. Your videos always get me pumped to do SOMETHING in at least one of my journals so thanks again =)
This is such a wonderfully honest review of this type of journal. I’m starting mine in 2025 & I’m actually looking forward to that confronting feeling - gotta work through that ish! Question: do you do anything with the pre-printed pages in the end? Like after the annual summary pages? I think I’m going to cover mine with…something, but struggling to decide on what!
I couldn't resist anymore I got one to start next year. I don't want to rush the time but I'm looking forward to starting it. I have other 5 yr ones to use in the meantime. I'm bad I don't keep up with it. But hopefully it's going to motivate me to keep it up since it's by the year. I think it will turn into my main everyday journal. I got the smaller one too. Not sure what I'm going to do about a cover yet. Not sure if anything else I have will fit. Will just decorate the box and keep it in that. LOL.
Thank you so much James for this thoughtful video! I really appreciate your honesty. I am thinking about getting a 5 year (and your video has me leaning towards a yes 🙌). There’s something so potentially powerful about seeing multiple years all on one page… like you said you’re becoming more aware of patterns in such a condensed space. And of course every journal is like a mirror, but this seems to offer a view a daily journal or creative journal might not. I guess if we want a multi-dimensional recollection of our lives and foibles, we gotta have all the journals 😂😬🙈
Okay I’m big hypocrite but that’s okay. Ik I said in 2 months ago that I wouldn’t do a 5 year Hobonichi, but I’ve decided to do it. And it’s going to be a one time thing for my 5 years of my life. So I bought it and I’m ready for the challenge. I just turned 25 this November. And I’m going to be 30 in the last 5th year of the 5 year hobo I got. I really want to see what I can do in theses five years. I’m going to take it day at a time literally.
This is great! Thank you so much for sharing. I was debating between this and the Midori. I'm a writer so I need space, and just ordered the A5! Hopefully the cost alone will ensure that I stick to it! :D
Hi James. Thank you for the warnings and encouragement. Lots of inspiration in your flip through. I’m currently embracing a Kinbor a6 to journal everyday life. I appreciate your candor. 😊new subbie
Sonds like a great idea, I guess I want a buy one and use only stamps, no stickers, precisely as you said, so it won't get bulcky within the years. Thank you 🥰
I am planning on starting a hobonichi 5 year journal next year and loved your idea with the photo strip to represent vacation days! Do you have a video on how you create the collage and which printer\photo paper you use? Thanks in advance!
Haha I had a good laugh at your comment about your poor memory unless it’s for arguments- then you remember every word someone said to you! I fear I’m the same. 😆 Thanks for your review on the 5 year, I’m about to order and now I’m really considering the five year. All the best to you! ☺️
I'm loving the idea of photo journalling, but it's always sounded like it would add so much bulk to a book. Yet yours don't seem too thick, also some of them look a little see-through maybe? Have you found a way to print photos on something really thin for pasting in?
I actually use my home printer CANON MX922 and print onto a variety of sticker papers made for inkjet printers. It's not a cheap printer (sometimes they go on sale), but it's great quality and I print SO much it is was more economical for me to use it over everything else. Hope that helps :)

I have health problems so I also have a health TN and also I am a Tarot reader so I have a journal for that too. I have a system that works for me not everyone but for me. Love and light to you and your family!
