- Bandelier National Monument - New Mexico - Cliff Dwellings - Alcove House Hiking
Bandelier National Monument is located just 45 min outside of Santa Fe New Mexico, near Los Alamos New Mexico in the Jemez Mountains. This park is over 33,000 acres of protected area, protecting several ancient dwellings of the pueblo people. In this video we walk along the Main Dwelling Trail and we hike to the Alcove House which is accessed via 140 feet of ladders.
The hike to Alcove House is typically closed in the winter due to ice, so be sure and visit this part of the monument in the warmer months. This cave is built in the cliff above the canyon, 150 feet above the canyon floor. Pottery fragments found in Alcove House indicate this cave was inhabited between 1250-1600AD. This is another gem for hiking New Mexico!
In typical years, access to Bandelier is provided by a shuttle bus from White Rock NM. In early 2021, the shuttle bus was not operating due to pandemic restrictions. Be sure to arrive early as parking is limited. New Mexico has announced a full reopening on July 1, 2021, so operations at the park should be getting back to normal.
This monument was named after Adolf F Bandelier (1840-1914) who conducted pioneering research throughout the Pajarito Plateau, where hundreds of archeological sites were revealed.

Thanks for sharing this video! I'm visiting here in 2 weeks and wanted to learn more before I go. It was nice that you shared information about what you saw there. Glad I clicked on this one!
excellent! One time I went in the winter and the path to Alcove house was closed to to snow and ice. It's been a pretty dry winter, so it should be fine. There are lots of beautiful accessible paths to take at this area.
Thanks for the great tour - nice weather! We visited once a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It’s inspiring to think of what it was like for the Ancient Pueblo peoples when they lived there- must have been beautiful! Very nice! 👍☀️☀️☀️
Glad you enjoyed it! There is so much to see in this area. Stay cool up there! Crazy hot temperatures coming your way!!
@@SwiftyTravels Thanks- we’ll try - not many people here have air conditioning- makes it extra rough when the houses get up to 85+ inside!
Beautiful sharing.. Enjoyed watching..

Well done video highlighting Bandelier National Monument! We didn't know much about this area, but after watching now know what to expect when spending a day there. Very unique features in this park! Although challenging, the ladder climbing looks fun. Thanks for sharing so many helpful tips with us! 👍😊
Thank you! This is a really great place to visit!!!

Amazing place! I've never heard of it but it makes me want to travel there, really fascinating, it's like a date with history!
There is a lot of fascinating history here!!
Those are such incredible little cave dwellings! So much history that must be there! Fantastic video my friend, new subscriber for you! 😁🙌🏻
Thanks for visiting and thanks so much for the sub!!! Have a great week!
Really cool place that is going to have to go on the list when we have a chance to go more north into New Mexico than our recent trip. You know, I always wonder about some of those dwellings and how they climb ladders and enter from above on some... what happened to the people as they aged? I mean, I'm in my 40s and ever since my foot accident the arthritis has been setting it... I cannot IMAGINE climbing ladders all the time! 😂 That said, pretty cool that you get to climb around on them now!
Northern New Mexico is really beautiful! They didn't live long, but I'll bet they were super strong!!!
Great video as always! So much detailed info 👌🏽
Thank you so much! I try to be informative! 😀😀 this is a beautiful area to visit. Have a great weekend!!

There's always next time!!! :-) Thanks for watching!
Good video
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you!!
See you around for support 🙂
Thank you!!
This is such a cool and amazing place to visit. I could not even begin to imagine what life would have been like for the people who occupied this area. I have been wanting to backpack further into the area for a while and camp within the back sections. There is an area called painted cave that is a 22-mile round trip hike. Great video and information for future exploration to folks not familiar with the area.
22 miles! Wow!! I just recently read about a waterfall in the area, that we missed, so I'm ready to go back! I would enjoy camping there and exploring more~ You should do the long hike and camp!!! I would tune in for all of those adventures ;-)
@@SwiftyTravels I think I will plan this and get a trip in this coming spring. I think waiting for the spring snowmelt will make finding water much easier.
@@ManzanoManATVAdventures that sounds awesome!!
good morning sis
Hello 😊
I would be willing to pay a few extra bucks on my taxes to help make these parks open and free. Just. Amazing.
I agree! I am so thankful these sights have been preserved! Thanks so much for watching!!!
You already are! I am disappointed on how much extra is Charged to Visitors! (&) Not even the Visitors Center Open.
Glad you did all the work thanks
You are welcome! 😀
