  • I'm gonna get up in the morning
I believe I'll dust my broom.
I'm gonna get up in the morning
I believe I'll dust my broom.
Well my best gal I'll be leaving
So my friend, get out my room
I'm gonna write a letter to China
See if my baby's over there.
I'm gonna write a letter to China
See if my baby's over there.
If she ain't up in the Hawaiian Islands,
    Must be in Ethiopia somewhere
I believe believe my time alone
I believe believe my time alone
I've had to quit my baby and give up my happy home

The ultimate blues song. Recorded by Elmo James but believed to have been recorded and written by Robert Johnson but this is also unclear. Anyway the best blues song ever !

The first known recording is by Robert Johnson, it’s called “I believe I’ll dust my broom.”

The twist of this tune was moustache = broom
    Dust = coke
Dusty pulled off his strings quickly and made a sniff snort motion under his nose, the crowd went wild!
I was close to stage on their Deguello Tour, they almost blew the roof off the whole Coliseum Vancouver Canada

I agree with Wikipedia that the line is "so my friend can have my room," not " So my friend, get out my room," because he is leaving and won't need it anymore.
Also, it makes much more sense that he says, "I believe my time ain't long," not "alone," because he is deciding to leave her soon.

That's exactly what he says: I believe my time ain't long. The other one is: so my friend can get my room

Julie- ZZs version song is a twist-
I was upfront at stage on their Deguello tour.
Dusty pulled off the strings quickly and finger motion under his nose, the crowd went wild!
The broom his moustache , Dusty’s finger drag motion under his nose as doing a line of coke!
Hope I didn’t burst your innocent bubble.
Write a letter to China ended up being an interpretation of “write a letter to China as China white coke.

@@jamesbaker9905He wasn't even the first to record it. The Sparks Brothers 1932 'I Believe I'll Make a Change ' is essentially the same song. So was Jack Kelly's 1933 recording 'I Believe I'll Go Back Home'. Kokomo Arnold's 'Sagefield Woman Blues' from 1933 and 'Sissy Man Blues' from 1935 had many of the same lines. Johnson didn't record 'I Believe I'll Dust My Broom' until 1936.
The source material for all of the above goes much further back than the history of recorded music. Many blues, folk, and spiritual songs were copyrighted by the first to record them. Other, almost identical songs would be given a different title with a few changed words and copyrighted by someone else. The true origins of such songs are lost in the fog of the past.

@@michaelclark9762 awesome knowledge, thank you. I have to admit I'm not big on knowledge of blues/popular music before Robert J. I appreciate all the roots from Africa etc but yes, thus will be something I'll look into. peace.

You might benefit from looking up the original lyrics and relisten to The Reverend. That or see an audiologist. I believe my time ain't long - despite his girl playing him and his initial desire to clear out (dust his broom so someone else can have his room) he decides he's too old to start over so he's going to swallow his pride and stay. It's the painful human condition which gives the blues impact. Otherwise it's just another silly, meaningless pop ditty.
