Hi, your van build is great. My husband is 6’2, and to get as much length across ways for the bed we have just cut off both ribs on either side, ready to frame and recess. I’m really hoping we haven’t weakened the structure of the van, and that the framing will be sturdy enough to put the strength back. Did we do right by taking the ribs out?? I’ve seen other van builders do it this way, but cannot for the life of me find any of the videos. I’m panicking now, especially as you only cut off one rib either side...
If the ribs are the ones I'm thinking off (the ones literally held on with glue) then you should be fine. These are not structural and really are only there to stop the sheet metal from flapping about. They are removed if you install rear windows anyway so don't stress.
I've heard that the foam mattresses can be hot, and of course Australia gets hot - does the memory foam mattress cope well with allowing air to circulate like an inner-spring mattress?
I've never heard of that. As long as the mattress is ventilated i don't think you will have a problem. That being having a slatted bed base rather than a solid piece. I can't see why a foam mattress would be any hotter than a spring mattress though, they aren't entirely hollow. Having said that we haven't slept on it on a really hot night yet. I can see and air mattress being cooler but who wants one of those.
@@saltyvanventures Thanks, I am really interested . I was looking at this www.thesleepjudge.com/why-memory-foam-hot-how-to-fix-it/. Your build is really high quality and its fascinating to see how you have fitted it across the van
Hi again. Any chance you could give me the internal dimensions of your garage as this was one of the key things I was hoping to learn from your Sketchup design. Thx heaps

What model of Ford Transit is that? How did you squeezed 191 cm out of it? I'm working on a Ford Transit 148 high roof extended lenght and all I got is 172 cm wide on the cargo area. Can you tell me the exact model please? EDIT: Nevermind, I found the video where you explain it! hahaha BRILLIANT idea!!
Another great video. We're in the process of doing the bed with the recessed walls. Was there a reason you made the recess the same height as the base? We're thinking about raising it to be the same height as the mattress, but not sure if that's the right thing to do or not.
6.3 .. well thats it then mate ..im movin in to .. the missus will have to shimmy up a bit .. i.ll bring the rum n raisin icecream.. thats nothin short of nasa stuff .. you might wanna give this mining industry the flick ..and be a coach builder .. yes sirree bob ..😍😎😁pip pips and carryon pilgrims

Thanks mate ... starting my build my inexpensive LDV V80 van...and youe channel has been an invaluable resource.... you rock ...cheers keep it up..... cheers
the whole internal width of a ford transit van is 68". and you have to do *some* insulation/cover. so we are at 67". that is 5ft 7 inch. how can a 6'3 person sleep in it? I think, since the title of this video is 'AMAZING Fixed BED for TALL People' , you should have at least measured and tell us what's the size of the damn bed. no?
Hey mate so glad I stumbled on this channel starting build in my own transit and had almost identical build in mind. For your rear vertical bed framing (90x35) you said you couldn’t RIVnut it. How did you brace them? Did you bracket these to van floor? Cheers!
its main support is the vertical timbers that hold all the weight of the horizontal one. The vertical timbers are screwed into the plywood wall and anything else i could get a screw into
Sorry if this is a dumb question but the Ford Transit is listed as 70.2 inches wide which is about 5 foot 11 inches. How did you make this fit a 6'3 person, I could not see any cutouts in the video?
What’s advertised and what’s measured from what I found are 2 different things. I’m presuming those measurements are with the standard plywood walls attached. Also the van width varies as it’s a rounded shape. I design the bed to be right in the widest possible spot. I also gained a few inches by cutting out the thicker ribs on the walls. Check the video in the description where I built the frame for the bed.
The thumbnail shows the bed being 6'3" and I'm curious how tall you are to see how much extra room you have to move around. Also, the foot and inch markings are backwards on your thumbnail. Aside from that, this build looks awesome. Great job!
Good question! I'm 6"3 so I fit, just. I just i don't sleep super strait so I have a bit of space to move around. Even more if i sleep on a slight angle.
I love this video! I am building out my van now and I am designing a bed frame for the build but I don't have the perfect design yet.
Awesome, good luck with your build!
FanTAStic!!!
Thank you! Cheers!

Hi. Any chance you could indicate where you got the retainer clips for underbed sliding table. Thx fella
Hey yes I just got them from Bunnings. They are in the same place as the magnets holds and latches

Its a 2014 350L high roof long wheel base. The van is widest around 1m off the floor
Could you share the link where it is explained? We need to create a 190cm bed and I do like ford transits, but will probably go with a mwb if we can
What size framing timber did you use for the bed frame - as assuming it was some standard stuff from Bunnings?
most of it was 70x35mm, the vertical supports were 90x35mm

If you do it your way wont you have a hard wood at either end of the bed with with mattress in the middle? That would make sleeping uncomfortable.
@@saltyvanventures true, I figured a pillow might fix that. But if your way works well, we're keen to follow. So hard knowing what to do sometimes.
Can you post the measures of the bed? :-)
Sure, The dimensions are 191cm long and 153cm wide, We bought a queen mattress that we trimmed up

Those that dont have cutouts top n tail yet still "claim" theyre beds are 6ft + are liars.
Are you calling me a liar?
I didn't see what makes it suitable for tall people. I cannot sleep across that van.
I’m 6’3” and sleep across the van. I think I’m considered a tall person

Watch the van tour. I literally show you with a tape measure how wide it is…
Put the doorslides flat on the underside of the table…
These drawer slides aren’t structural in that orientation. They need to be vertical to hold the intended weight
Hey mate, just getting to framing out our dining and bed area now. What height are your dining seats and pull out table?
Thanks again!

I really liked the idea of the sliding table but hadn't seen it constructed until now. Great, clear instructions and a super smart example 👏😁
thank you!
Hey mate love your work 2x4 is that a 40x90 mm in Australia and did you use dressed timber for your bed frame ?
I think it roughly translates to 95X45. But you can get a lot of similar sizes. These are just rough sawn construction timber, not dressed.
You should wear tanktops (or no top at all) as much as possible 🔥🔥🔥 Also, van is looking good :)
Noted!
I am putting in the exact same slat bed, but didn't know what mattress to use. Now I know. Thanks.
That mattress is an absolute dream. The memory foam topper is to die for

How is the bed holding up with the fence boards with the mattress on it
