The genus Pinus includes about 105 species, distributed widely through the northern hemisphere.
In India following 5 species of Pinus occur which are usually confined to the north east and north west Himalayan region.
1. Pinus roxburghii: (P. longifolia): Commonly called chir pine and have three needles in each foliar spur. Grows in the hills of Kashmir, Punjab, U.P and Himachal Pradesh.
2. Pinus wallichiana: (P. excelsa): Blue pine or kail and have five needles in each foliar spur. Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh.
3. Pinus gerardiana: Chilgoza pine and have three needles. Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
4. Pinus merkusii: Two needles and are common in the hills of East Bengal.
5. Pinus insularis: (syn. P. khasya): Khasi pine and have three needles and is common in Khasya regions of Assam
