For those who haven't read the series, keep in mind that a lot of this information is intentionally vague because it happened 3,000 years ago from the start of the first book. Only fragments are known and Robert Jordan was a firm believer in stories and legends changing and becoming more mythological instead of factual over time. The farther one is from the event, either in space or time, the less likely one is to know what actually happened. Hence the references to Mosk and Merk, Lenn and Salya, and the Mercedes emblem being put in a museum (made of some unknown material that is easy to scratch). Meanwhile the current events in the book resemble or modern day myths and legends, for it happened ages ago. It's actually even longer. The Age of Legends was three thousand years before the current story. The First Age was even longer ago. Possibly three millennia before the AoL? Maybe even longer? Who knows? The only two people who knew are dead.
I remember when it was first revealed that the AOL was actually a technological wonderland. It blew my freaking mind. I was even more shocked to learn that the first age and the legends told of it were people and events of the late 20th century
Lenn, who flew to the moon in an eagle made of fire is John Glenn, the first American in space. Matrese, the great healer is Mother Theresa, the... uh.... great healer. Elspet, the Queen of All is Queen Elizabeth who ruled over 1/4 of the Earth's land and people. Mosk and Merk, the two brother giants who'se lances of fire reached around the world are Moscow (USSR) and 'merica (USA). In Tanchico there was a display of things from the time before the AoL which included a giraffe skeleton and a Mercedes-Benz hood ornament. Also, I personally think that the "Age before the age of legends" was ended by a nuclear war between the USSR and the USA simply because that is the most recent contemporary thing mentioned as existing. The nuclear war's fallout mutated humans so that they could learn to access the Power and that led to the Age of Legends.
It's just reflections, not actually the 20th century. They didnt fly with gasoline in their technological age. The closest analog is the conqueror of shambala movie for Fullmetal Alchemist. It's more parallel worlds that have some overlap, rather than age 1 is us, age 2 is AOL, age 3 is dark age, etc... We have our own age of legends, which is saidar and saidin free. There is just some bleed over in the form of constants, like the dragon, whose blood on the rocks saves them, and Jesus, whose blood saves us.
I love it when a channel does lore on worlds that I know little about or never even heard of in the first place. I'm getting tired of all these elder scrolls and star wars lore channels.
Word of warning - if you decide to read the Wheel of Time, be ready for 5-8 books in the middle of the series being essentially useless filler. I'm not recommending that you NOT read the books. Just a warning that from book 5 to book 12 (you won't know where you fall on that spectrum until you've read them all), you will have to work at reading them because it's a hell of a lot of stuff that is essentially filler - nice to have stuff, but... a slog to get through. Hopefully someone will do an edit on the books and turn them into 3 sets of 4 books - on for Mat, one for Perrin, one for Rand and one for the World at large.
Book 10 was the only book that really didn't need to be written. Some of the books from 7-11 moved much slower but only Crossroads of Twilight was a "below average" book.
You ever wonder if the dark one waits for his name to be spoken and then it turns out to be a different word? Like "look out! That tree is falling! Oh Shaiiit. Shite." He must have to listen to some things because he would know all the plans of everyone if he just heard the whole world at the same time. Would the first one he hears get a big jolt and the next one get a smaller one because he spent his energy cursing the first one? What if 300 people just yelled Shai'tan over and over for a few days? Would he start taking less and less notice until he just quit bothering to curse people back for using his name? Plot twist. The dark one is the creator. He just went insane while trapped and started to destroy what he had created. He was so powerful that he knew he would lose it and created tools (hero’s of the horn, taveran etc) to insure he could not destroy his own creation. When he injected good into the pattern he gave too much and his dark side became dominate. Think about it.

The Dark One's counterstroke was not by accident. The one power (not speaking the true source) was meant to be used by both men and women together. Male and female Aes Sedia. The tainting of the male half crippled the Aes Sedai, and created generations of hate, and disbelief. A man who uses the one power is destined to go mad, leading up to the red Ajah's witch hunts against the "false dragons" Here's what I have to say about the red ajah. Liandrin. Enough said. Are all reds Black ajah? Or are they just simply anti-male? Maybe they're just doing what they can to keep the people safe. I beliee the Aes Sedai forgot their purpose. To serve. OMG, I clicked on this so fast! I'm on book 5 or 6 and had to stop due to work, but gonna finish the series! Thank you. :3 Btw I heard a show might be in the making? I hope HBO takes it so we get some good stuff. :)
HBO is focusing on Game of Thrones and it's one or two spin-off series so they won't touch Wheel of Time. Sony is the company who has the rights but where the series will air is unknown.
So why didn't the Saidar help the Saidin to seal the dark one after their plan failed? They could of stopped the Saidin from getting the taint? Or maybe it was a lucky escape not to get tainted as well? I'm like 12 chapters from finishing The Eye Of The World so I'm sure I will get answers later on in this 15 book series, I'm looking forward to it.
The books go into more detail. Basically there was a conflict within the aes sedai over how to fix the issue and when. The woman that opposed lews therin's plan got all the female aes sedai to refuse to help, only 100 male aes sedai were willing to help lews therin. Its hinted that possibly saidar would have been tainted too, but there seems to be some small disagreement over if that would have happened.
Im 1/4th of the way through book 7 can someone tell me if watching this video will spoil anything major in the remaining books? I want to watch but don't want to ruin anything
This video doesnt have major story spoilers but it does contain historical info that is revealed throughout the series, some of which is tied to events near the end of the series.
@@CivilizationEx Just finished memory of light earlier today and found myself back on this video lol this is all such good info alot of it I didn't pick up on in the books
One thing: correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think it's stated that the Dark One came into being at the same time as the Wheel, only that he was sealed at the moment of creation. I thought the Dark One was primordial as he is said to be the "antithesis" of the Creator, thus also not created. This of course tells us nothing about who or even what either of these entities is, or why they exist in the first place. If I'm wrong about that and there is a quote that the Dark One came into being (rather than just being sealed) at the moment of creation, please do reply with it. The metaphysics of the Wheel world have never made any sense to me. Maybe not just to me? 1) If the Dark One is only able to touch the pattern once the Bore is opened, and our age is before the age of legends, why do people in our age do evil shit? Shai'tan doesn't need to try so hard, we seem to be doing a fine job of being evil all on our own! 2) Some say the Dark One is not a spirit of evil then, but of destruction, yet at many instances he chooses less destructive paths than he could have. Also, the Dark One clearly has at least some aspects of a personality. He is a bit of a drama queen and is easily upset with people when they don't do what he wants. But what IS he? The series just punts on this question, leaving too many contradictory concepts competing for the empty space. Is he really the Creator's antithesis? If so how could be imprisoned? Is the prison within or without the Pattern? The books say it's outside, repeatedly, but Lanfear bored into it from within. That means it's directly adjacent - that sounds more like the prison is MADE OF the Pattern. Which is it? It's honestly maddening that such a baffling character as the Dark One should not be given a backstory or a setting. Sure, he is the essence of evil in Rand's universe, but why does that have to stop him from having an identity in whatever realm of reality he resides? I'm frustrated that we were never given any insight into what kind of reality, if any, the Dark One experiences. How does he (would "it" truly be more appropriate?) perceive himself? Is he called the Dark One because he is bad, or because he is without self-knowledge? Is that his plight?! See, we are never allowed to learn what he is, we are only allowed to see what the people of the pattern perceive him to be. For all we know, in the dimension where the Dark One exists he is a black Labrador, chewing up the Creator's blanket while the latter is away at work. In the absolute void Jordan provides us in terms of metaphysical satisfaction, this narrative is as likely as any, and I find that disappointing.
Very interesting that the female Aes Sedai did not supported the Dragon. I do not remember that... Guess it is time that I read the series again. Greeting from germany
I can't help but wonder if maybe that was the Pattern protecting itself. Lews Therin's plan required touching the Dark One with the One Power, if the female Aes Sedai participated and it was a combined flow of both saidin and saidir that touched the Dark One, would the Dark One have been able to taint both sides of the One Power? With no female Aes Sedai present to channel saidir, one half of the One Power was kept away from the Dark One's corrupting touch, allowing a group of channelers to continue on, preserving knowledge about the One Power on down to the end of the Third Age when the Dragon would be reborn.
Naah, this video is backstory that gets revealed quite quickly in the books. It might lessen the impact of the revelations, and one of those scenes is one of the strongest in the entire series. But mostly it is just a bit surprise and wonder at the world that you will loose.
Nah, it's way to sparse for that. And I'm obviously talking about new people, and seeing as the strong points of the series are great characters and their deeds, and a ton of background in the margins, spoiling of great scenes is not what newbies need.
My problem is that, in the story, "the universe" is just Earth. That's OK for the purposes of the story, but I find it very shortsighted for today. I do hope that people who write fantasy in the future eschew religious nonsense and embrace the unimaginable vastness of the universe, instead of limiting the whole of reality to our tiny little planet. The story is somewhat fun to read, but it's limited and small in a way Tolkien's work is not (from which it copies so much...)
Almost? It's horrible, because this our chance. We're not going to get any more video content in the WoT after this, not unless someone resurrects it decades later or something. Who knows if the fandom will even endure that long. UNFORGIVABLE!
I love the Wheel of Time series. As long as you skip the chapters that include Nynaeve and her endless braid-pulling you will likely enjoy them too. 🎲 🎀 😜🎲
So the creator used the true source to create the wheel and the world yet the magic of the dark one is also the true source. Or am I missing something?
@@user-ne6vq6pl3c They are different. The Dark One uses the True Power, which was the energy imprisoned outside the Wheel. The Wheel itself uses the True Source to turn, and that's where magic comes from.
Thank you, I hadn't realized there was the sources and powers. True source/true power, one source/one power. If I understand correctly now anyways. I'm only to chapter 9 in the first book. Thank you for the quick response though, definitely helps to understand the lore and world when reading

"Almost, human. Almost."
Or what if the dark one isnt listening?
He must have to listen to some things because he would know all the plans of everyone if he just heard the whole world at the same time.
What if two people said his name at the same time, but they were 40 miles apart? Would he hear the one closest to the bore? Would he hear both but the speed of sound would make one heard first? Would the first one he hears get a big jolt and the next one get a smaller one because he spent his energy cursing the first one?
What if 300 people just yelled Shai'tan over and over for a few days? Would he start taking less and less notice until he just quit bothering to curse people back for using his name?
What if during a battle, you struck while a few infiltrators said his name behind enemy lines, causing the area to shake and disrupt the enemy defenses?
So many questions...

It sounds like you're just making all this shit up. Respect. Great primer for those looking forward to the series.
OMG so many other fans of the wheel of time series
Do a video on The Aiel
The release of the dark one sounds just like CERN
literally lmao i found that out while finishing a memory of light a few days ago
OMG, I clicked on this so fast! I'm on book 5 or 6 and had to stop due to work, but gonna finish the series! Thank you. :3
Btw I heard a show might be in the making? I hope HBO takes it so we get some good stuff. :)
Bunnyontherocks books slow down a bit between 7 and 10 but they pick up big time after that. Try the audiobooks
Sony is taking it
HBO is focusing on Game of Thrones and it's one or two spin-off series so they won't touch Wheel of Time. Sony is the company who has the rights but where the series will air is unknown.
you also don't want them to take it or they will make you pay a crap ton of money to watch it.
Sony got the show
So why didn't the Saidar help the Saidin to seal the dark one after their plan failed?
How Zeus miss you with that thunderbolt man you must be the Beyonder
FWIW: When I first read the description of that "3 pointed star" several years ago, I *wondered* is that what was being described....
Good video, I wouldnt mind seeing more wot content.
Love how they illustrate the dark one
Where can i find the music you used on this video? It's epic.
Right here :) ruclips.net/video/BnmglWHoVrk/видео.html
@@CivilizationEx thanks
Yess love this series!!!
I want read the series
What should I read after GoT, WoT, & kingkiller chrinicles?
The Witcher series, Dagger and Coin series, and the Cosmere Universe are my suggestions :)
it pains me to hear the word "magic". Somehow it doesn't fit.
Well it's a ethereal power so yeah.
The One Power is magic...
I agree
Ikr!!
The explanation for magic in wheel of time is actually well thought out.
I wonder if you could do the cosmre ar some point
I likely will at some point, just not sure when.
So…. What age is the dinosaurs?
Are all this info can be read on "Crossroad of twilight"?
Did you pull this from the books or other guides? It is very well put together.
Rajneesh Chellapilla A lot of this comes from books 4 and 12
So a lasting progress was impossible? That was always a depressing part of the series.
Bravo this was great
Does this have spoilers on the books?
Just checking I am about halfway through book 1 :)
There are no story spoilers but there are history spoilers, stuff from the past that is revealed in later books.
Do the conquest of Artur hawking
I love these video's and I love your voice !!
what..this came out on my birthday and i missed it.. what... hype hype hype. hopefully show will be better than GoT.
@@edwardsimpson119it was implied that saidar would also be tainted
absolutely amazing summary great job m8
Is the dark one just a scribble with a red marker?
^As good an explanation as two bestselling authors provided
Do series on Malazan
Mykar is it really worth reading? Is it better than WoT?
Que ícone. Bem explicado! Cadê os BRs?!
Fantastic.
Haven't read them , but i intend to do so . Is this video very spoilery ? Should i watch it ?
This video has no story spoilers from the books, but it does have history spoilers about the past of the world and how magic works.
Naah, this video is backstory that gets revealed quite quickly in the books. It might lessen the impact of the revelations, and one of those scenes is one of the strongest in the entire series. But mostly it is just a bit surprise and wonder at the world that you will loose.
This won't spoil anything. If anything it will help you to understand the books more
Nah, it's way to sparse for that. And I'm obviously talking about new people, and seeing as the strong points of the series are great characters and their deeds, and a ton of background in the margins, spoiling of great scenes is not what newbies need.
When will you release more videos on this series? My brother in law loves this series, but I just don't have time to read these books.
+kevin licht the next WoT vid will be in March
If you don’t have time to read the books yourself, I highly recommend listening to them instead. Michael Kramer and Kate Reading do an amazing job.
Only realised this wasn't LOTR 4 minutes in, was thouroughly confused
The apostrophe in ta'veren indicates that the inflection is on the first syllable.
Tah-vee-ren
My problem is that, in the story, "the universe" is just Earth. That's OK for the purposes of the story, but I find it very shortsighted for today. I do hope that people who write fantasy in the future eschew religious nonsense and embrace the unimaginable vastness of the universe, instead of limiting the whole of reality to our tiny little planet.
The story is somewhat fun to read, but it's limited and small in a way Tolkien's work is not (from which it copies so much...)
Amazon would have been better served by creating a series based on the age of legends. What they did with WOT is almost unforgivable.
Almost? It's horrible, because this our chance. We're not going to get any more video content in the WoT after this, not unless someone resurrects it decades later or something. Who knows if the fandom will even endure that long. UNFORGIVABLE!
Lews Therin Telamon = Ainz Ooal Gown
One of the sad things about the series is they don't go into any of this.
They just say 'men' destroyed the world in their arrogance.
Is the book good?
Yes the books are pretty good.
I really enjoyed them. There's a lot to read though, it makes lord of the rings look like a short story.
best books i've ever read, the ending is the most epic ending ever!
I love the Wheel of Time series. As long as you skip the chapters that include Nynaeve and her endless braid-pulling you will likely enjoy them too. 🎲 🎀 😜🎲
It's definitely worth a read
Who else is hear after hearing that a new “Age of Legends” film trilogy is in the works?
✋
Is there spoiler for 10 and up bc I’m on 10 ?
Hey do you draw all the pics on the video
How much does this spoil the books?
No story spoilers but there are history spoilers, as in stuff that will be revealed later in the books about the history of the world and its people.
Wheel of time 😍😍😍
what happened in the other 5 ages ? (3 to 7)
Loved this!! More WoT pleassse!
Anybody ever play Wheel of Time PC Game? Very cool at the time...they should make a new one.
Whats the motivation of the dark one?
So the creator used the true source to create the wheel and the world yet the magic of the dark one is also the true source. Or am I missing something?
Err true source/power are interchangeable or different? It's a bit confusing for some of us that haven't read the books yet..
How about making more WoT videos?
Perfect!
I wonder if Robert Jordan was trying to create a myth like lord of the rings about the biblical creation. Just makes me think.
I wish there was a WOT lore channel
Daniel Greene
i have never read this book is it good
Better than the Amazon shit-show.
I still want to know if Beidomon was one of the forsaken or if he was killed when the Sharon was destroyed
He survived the destruction of the Sharom, but was horrified at what he and Mierin had unleashed. He tried to be forgotten, but was too well known, and he committed suicide sometime before the breaking.
