I don't even hair rig the cubes. With hard cheese, i just use bigger, thicker hooks and just hook the cheese, I cast 45 meters and I keep catching fish, so they must stay on...
I have never used a hair-rig for barbel. I tend to use corn, cheese and worms. Red Leicester stays on the hook nicely, as long as it is kept out of the sun.

this is not a new bait i have had barbel on cheese from the swale and the river ure works best when the rivers in flood
