I’m Scottish and started travelling abroad for work in my 20s. I soon became embarrassed that I was a typical “Brit abroad” that only spoke English and made it my mission to learn a little of each language when I travelled. I worked in 44 countries and I speak a little bit of 28 languages - just enough to be polite, say hello, how are you, good morning, see you later, no problem etc. I always found that when I tried I was always met with a smile and a better willingness to help. Even in French in Paris!
I also know some of the more difficult languages like Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) and Japanese. I’ve just retired but still keep up using what I learned as there are plenty of opportunities in the UK. Last week my DPD delivery guy was shocked when I was able to say a few words in Kurdish and to his mate in Albanian!
Wow
Bro, that can be dangerous. If I ask “¿Donde esta el baño?” and I get two full sentences in response I’m screwed 🤷🏼♂️
Really? I've studied some Japanese, and it didn't seem to hard to speak, very easy grammar... sure, none of the word is indioeuropean, so it's hard to learn the vocabulary, but...
Kurdish what is that what country speaks that
With that attitude you won't have any problems getting by. But so many people these days seem to expect others to speak their language, even when they're abroad. However, as a non romance speaker myself (dutch) "I'm sure I'll learn Italian faster than just about any other European language. i'm italian, and that's the most accurate difference between us and french i've ever heard!
I'm totally not a leg man but whoa for days 😮🤗🇨🇦
I confirm. Most of the Parisians are rude, Even if You try to be polite, they just look at You with disdain.
The French live a stone's throw from England, they LOVE when someone is actually willing to try and speak their language.
First and last time watching James, not an interviewer.... but who am I to say?!?
I would bear anyone's interview at the condition Christoph Waltz balance the conversation 😅
This actor is too under rated!
He's won 2 academy awards.
@@tomk427 sorry didn t know that, i just like so much the way he is acting
As a french i dont agree, its really cool to speak with a foreigner who tries french even if its really bad french. Try, fail and then the good way to say things is a very good way to improve i believe
Nice try dude, we all know you are working for French Tourism for Olympics this year
Some people are cool like you, but then there's a lot who wont take it as you do. I was a student in France for 3 years.
Christopher is spot on here. I visit France a lot, 2/3 times per year. My French is not good and I have had handful of people sneer at my lack of French even though I try. They are not impressed when I tell them I speak fluent Spanish and good German.
I have a friend living there for 20 years, married to a Frenchman - fluent French needless to say. She says she was there 15 years before people started to accept her.
I live in Spain and I never got that reaction from Spanish people. Always happy that you are trying to learn their language.
@@alamshar Damn i'm chocked... did you try anywhere else Paris cause this city is full of dumbasses even if you are actually french.
French people usually give people shit if you try tho
The French appreciated my attempt to speak French when I visited. They were ✨ lovely ✨ to me!
Love Christoph Waltz.
He's right about the Italians mind, such lovely people when I was there and they really try to help you when you try the language
Never seen a french who hates when you try to speak french, they'll try to help you if you struggle.
As an English speaker who lives in France and is now fluent in French, I found when learning French in Toulouse , Toulon and Lyon they were helpful where as in Paris they were rude af
@@eoin8156 are you sure this is even true about Paris? because most Parisians are literally french people who were born and raised in other french regions + immigrants for the majority
there's often a strong confirmation bias with this kind of things, like if you meet 1 asshole in Paris you'll think "ah, so what they say is true !"
@@eoin8156Paris is not France, even parisians sometimes hates paris
@@eoin8156 There’s French people and there’s Parisians
Like really 😅
Some are nice most are not
That’s a running joke between French people
@@kal-el3357And Parisians are rude to *each other* not just to foreigners.
*Herr Waltz showing us how he's both charming and dangerous in one anecdote.*
I never felt that as an exchange in a village in SouthWest France. Everyone was helpful and was encouraging for me to attempt communicating in their language. One time I lost a book. It appeared again in my accomodations. The clerk told me it got dropped in the morning. When I asked how they knew where to turn it in. The guy just said: Youre the only one thats reading a book in English. They just asked the folks where an English speakin guy was staying and got pointed my way😂😂
Bring back Craig and Geoff
Legs.
Sho liz.
love how they german-french relationship came through at the end :D
german-french relationship is not bad... well if you exclude the last two world war ...
It took 1000 years to get along with the English
It took roughly 100 years to get along with the German
I would say relationship is better with the German than the English 😂
@@ChucklesAndChatterShorts what are you talking about, france and germany have basically been rivals since those countries (or their predecessors) existed.
@@nasekiller "since those countries (or their predecessors) existed."
What are you talking about is the question.
There was no predecessor for the German nation/empire.
It was just hundreds of smaller losely connected Kingdoms.
You could say the first attack on the whole of germany was Napoleon. So around 100 to150 years of rivalry.
There were fights before, but it was more of some individual aristocrats settling their beef.
But the Kingdoms also fought amongst each other. That's why regional rivalries in germany date back over a thousand of years and can be even seen today with cities right next to each other.
Nowadays it can be seen especially in soccer.
@Skyl3t0n What about the partition of the Frankish Empire after the Treaty of Verdun 843 which created Western Francia, Eastern Francia, Eastern Francia and conflicts between them and later the advent of the Holy Roman Empire and conflicts with the Kingdom of France?
The one guy that laughed at James Cordons "No" was funnier than the joke
pls, DO NOT "ITALIAN GESTURES"
Christopher is one of my favorite actors , specially when he speaks in different languages...
But french I guess,😂
His name is Christoph. Not Christopher.
I am French and I never blame foreigners to speak french. We know it is a real effort and we even congratulate people. This legend on French shaming people for their french is weird. I tried to speak German in Germany and they even did not say no, they just answer in english...😢😅
Not true. Probably coz french hates italians but 70/80% of people I know who’s had problems speaking to french people, especially in Paris.
Same here. It s a bs story. We love everyone and especially Italian culture. The only way you could get a bad reaction is if you arrive without saying hi and please like an educated person...
@@IzzyRhChannel You're over confidence when you're saying complete bullshit, it's so funny.
LBH, i really liked the fact you tried to put an exact percentage on a stats that come from your ass :')
