  • Dealing with a dog that has bad separation anxiety can be yet another challenge of owning and operating a boarding business. There is only so much you can do for them being not the owner of the dog. I try my best though despite the damages a dog like this can do to your facility unless it's all concrete like a prison. I take you through a weekend of many thoughts and challenges. Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing this. This was a very enjoyable video to watch while stuck at my 9-5 desk job. I like seeing good people successful in their dog businesses. I’m a trainer and I’m in the process of starting my own business while still working my 9-5. My personal dogs are working dogs so they need additional enrichment. I do have a suggestion for Riot and dogs like her. You might try a dog trotter or dog pacer. Some people frown upon the thought of “dog treadmills” but they are not cruel and it’s not forcing the dog to do something it doesn’t want to do. Once they understand how it works, most dogs love them. Energetic dogs typically really enjoy the activity. It helps to supplement the walks in between actual outings plus if the weather is bad it’s more comfortable and safer for the dog. I also like to give a Kong (the black ones for tough chewers) with some natural sugar free peanut butter or other appropriate stuffing to keep them entertained. “Indestructibones” work well for these types of dogs also. It gives them something safe to chew on and enjoy when not interacting with you directly. I’ve recently discovered your channel and really like the content while sitting at my desk.

How long do you set your hangout timer for? I have a dog boarding business, home based too. I’m in California. Nice to see you vlog videos. Keep up the good work.

Thank you very much. I appreciate that very much. It usually depends on how many dogs I have but bare minimum 25 to 30 minutes and that’s usually about four times a day.

I’ve watched a couple of your videos. What state are you in, just out of curiosity? It reminds me of Utah/Nevada. And how much did it cost to get your boarding business started?

New Mexico! I want to say to get it open was about 30k. My wife and I did all the work from the ground up so if you had contractors it would be a lot more.

I'm planning on building this summer. How large is your building?

Nice! Ours is about 12ft by 80ft ish, lol I'd have to measure length again. Good luck, hopefully building costs don't smash you too much.
