Really nice review! By the way the game was so popular in Poland probably because it was made by polish developers. I am from Poland and polish people really love their games. :) Even if the game wasn't so good i think all the polish kids played it back in the day. I am playing the game right now for the nostalgia feels and it is frustrating and bad but i just can't stop loving this game. And main character's design and animations are really cool! These ears are almost hypnotizing, i honestly think that Kao as a character deserves a better game. Well i guess the second one is good if i remember. Oh and one intersting thing: The PC version of the game actually had tank controls. Now i wish i could play console version. Keep up the good work mate :)
+GuyWithChainsaw I learned very quickly this was made in Poland haha :D It's funny you mention tank controls, that explains the oddness during the chase sequences. I definitely have a soft spot for Kao as well. The sequel (I played on the GameCube) is actually a really solid platformer, I enjoyed it quite a bit!
implantgames Nice! I will definitely play second one again after im done with the first one. Tone of people already said that but there is a third game by the way. Thanks for the respence! :D
I'm playing this now for the first time after never hearing about it until the remaster announcement. Very good review that covers all the things I came across. It's very strange how the controls get inverted when doing a level running towards the screen! It hurt my brain
There are 3 sequel :) But I think that one part is the best :) .. The second part is too cool;), but the third had I do not like: / Otherwise, I played all the parts :)
Music is boring? WAT? This game has awesome soundtrack. Also "?" bonuses are called "?". You don't need to collect them. Pretty good idea to insert bad "power ups". This game is not easy, but I wouldn't take it as disadvantage.
+Lemur Dawid I have a soft spot for Kao on the Dreamcast. It's not the best game ever, but it's pretty obscure and one most folks have never heard of :)
It looks generic and frustrating as hell, but this was one of maybe three games I have played through my whole childhood. It took me 4 years to finish it for the first time, and I DIDN'T MIND, because people back then weren't such a disgusting bunch of casuals. And yes, I'm from Poland. Also, you forgot to mention boss stages.
Janioszek Thanks for the comment! I think I was one of the few people in the US that beat this game back when it was new. The bosses didn't leave much of an impression on me (good or bad) which is why I didn't comment on them. Have you checked out Kao 2? It's a much better game, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.
implantgames Of course I have. I also think second part was a better game, mainly because of variety of levels and skill development systems. However, it didn't make such a huge impact as I was older and it wasn't much of a hassle to finish the game. I've played KAO 2 so many times that I've actually started speedrunning it as I remembered every shortcut available :D The third part, however, is a bit disappointing. It has some great levels, but it's significantly shorter than former parts.
Нелетяка Somehow when researching this game, I missed the fact it was developed in Poland. I'm hoping to track down the sequel and give it a play through as well.
I give this game at 5/5 :) Because of that is from 2000, so it is very nice :) And this game led me to mime childhood :) (I've played it since maybe 3 years old cousin :)) And I love those who know this game now and recognize her as I do :) And since I love Poland :) I'm from Czech :)
implantgames Most definitely. It is one of my favorite ps1 games. I got it as a kid so nostalgia maybe a factor. Admittedly the camera is not the greatest, and may cause some frustration, bu it is manageable. Game informer gave it an 8 back in the day and I would said that's accurate. If you can get it for ps1 for about 5-10 dollars I think it is way worth it, just for the music and atmosphere alone, haha. Caddicarus gave a good review on it as well.
Im here cause of the switch version. Seeing what ima get myself into

Another Crash Bandicoot, clone for the Dreamcast. (Rather than just Super Magnetic Neo.)
Indeed haha :) If only they could have combined beautiful presentation of Super Magnetic Neo with the playability of Kao...
I didn't know there was a Kao sequel.... but I guess I didn't care either.
Ryan AirZonkWorldChamp No one did, haha :D

Right on!
I liked it.
The Gayming Tube If you like #D platformers, definitely check out Kao the Kangaroo 2. It is a huge improvement over the original!
implantgames I have that game too :P

I think the game is decent. Fun enough for me to complete. It is a bit ugly though.
I think I may have been a bit too harsh on old Kao. It really is an ok game offering some moments of fun.
At least both sequels were decent.

It was so popular in Poland cause it was made there.
IMO one of the best 3d platformer ever made, and I'm not pole, i'm russian.

I pronounce this as cow. XD
This reminds me of croc for ps1, except it looks a little worse. Kao has the same running motion and same hiya tail move like croc
Robert Wink I used to have Croc on the Saturn, didn't give it much time though. Is it worth picking up?

The game is obscenely generic, wildly frustrating and simply not worth the time. Kids will throw tantrums and adults will pull out their hair.
+TheCodedtestament you'd be surprised as the game never made anyone I know angry. it's actually pretty relaxing to play and distracting.
I agree with you,the game sucks
