    I purchased Incantations on the day it was released. Unfortunately for me, I was 18 and lacked the patience to give the music the space it required, and also lacked the attentiveness it deserves. After some 40 odd years I listened to it again and oh my God. It's incredible.
    Recently Mike Oldfield described Incantations as the end of one part of his musical career and the beginning of another. I cant help but feel that the four instrumental compositions he opened his account with - from Tubular Bells to Incantations will be the ones most lovingly recalled and replayed. They will never die.

    This is Oldfield's most intellectual work - in that this is music intended not just to be heard but to be understood. Parts of it are pretty, parts of it are cool, but it's not super-accessible or "fun to listen to" in the way that, say, Ommadawn or Islands is. I believe that Oldfield would have done better to explain a lot more of the intellectual underpinnings of the work in the liner notes, as is fairly standard practice with Classical albums. This album has much more in common with modern, minimalist composers like Steve Reich and John Adams than it does with Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin.
    'Incantations' is built around the intertwining concepts of the lunar cycles, the musical circle of fifths, the evocation of Diana (Roman goddess of the moon and of the hunt), and the Native American view of the sun and moon as they appear in Longfellow's 'Hiawatha'.
    The opening of the work signals this: the eight synthesized voices (lip-synched in this video) sing a theme, built of 5ths. A gong three times, and the strings play the same theme of 5ths. Then the circle-of-fifths theme begins; as the flute plays a complicated melody, the other instruments provide a chordal structure which rotates through 12 of the 24 musical keys. This idea is used again and again throughout the work.
    I could go on, but listening to it with these ideas in mind should help listeners enjoy this piece a lot more. If you are among the few who really love this album, please consider listening to The Desert Music, by Steve Reich, especially the performance by Alarm Will Sound.
    The full album is here; The Desert Music starts at about 30:54. ruclips.net/video/fiaTvR9sFX8/видео.html

      I agree... probably along with Hergest Ridge which has an amazing modern classical layered feel.. but Incantations really is freakishly complex... You can really hear his influence from Phiilp Glass' Einstein on the Beach and those ever changing time signatures... but in a rock context! Bloody genius! Hiding complexity behind something most people will understand.. 3 stars on Allmusic??? 5 stars from me. You can't imagine anyone doing anything like this in the modern age...

      Thank you for sharing this. I agree with what you're saying, and love that performance of 'Desert Music'. 'Incantations' and 'Hergest Ridge' are by far my favourite Mike Oldfield albums; they contain his usual lovely style, but with structural depths and musical play that rewards repeated listenings in a very unique way. Thanks also for your analysis. I think 'Incantations' is a particularly incredible work, and whenever I go back to it I'm reminded how much I wish more music of this stature was still created. :-)

    MIKE OLDFIELD - EXPOSED live - ''Exposed'' is a live concert video by Mike Oldfield recorded in 1979 at Wembley Conference Centre. The live album of the same name was released in 1979; it also had the same artwork. A DVD version of the concert was released in 2005 (see 2005 in music). It was part of the Tour of Europe 1979.

      Even after hearing Incantations, or Hergest Ridge, perhaps 5,000 times I still discover something new on almost every additional listening, somewhere within the texture - a motif played very softly taken from another subject, or discovering some musical relation that I hadn't observed before! The only thing I have learned about Oldfield's early works is to not be surprised about being surprised

    I have always loved Oldfield's music and have virtually all of his oeuvre. Personally I find that the early works, culminating around Discovery as an unbroken chain of productivity, and later including Amarok, are the best of Mike Oldfield. The studio albums can seem a little sterile in comparison with the live works which, given Oldfield's shyness and famous reticence to perform live (hence "Exposed") is legendary. Oldfield's early, live, works are probably my favourite contemporary works of any musician. The later variants of Tubular Bells and other, collaborative efforts don't get played so much. The 70's was a particularly fecund era of musical productivity and prodigy, especially in England. I just hope "Return To Ommadawn" repays my belief in Oldfield better than Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygene 3 has in him.

    By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
    By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
    At the doorway of the wigwam,
    In the early Summer morning,
    Hiawatha stood and waited.
    All the air was full of freshness,
    All the earth was bright and joyous,
    And before him, through the sunshine,
    Westward toward the neighboring forest
    Passed in golden swarms the Ahmo,
    Passed the bees, the honey-makers,
    Burning, singing in the sunshine.
    Bright above him shone the heavens,
    Level spread the lake before him;
    From its bosom leaped the sturgeon,
    Sparkling, flashing in the sunshine;
    On its margin the great forest
    Stood reflected in the water,
    Every tree-top had its shadow,
    Motionless beneath the water.
    From the brow of Hiawatha
    Gone was every trace of sorrow,
    As the fog from off the water,
    As the mist from off the meadow.
    With a smile of joy and gladness,
    With a look of exultation,
    As of one who in a vision
    Sees what is to be, but is not,
    Stood and waited Hiawatha.
    Toward the sun his hands were lifted,
    Both the palms spread out toward it,
    And between the parted fingers
    Fell the sunshine on his features,
    Flecked with light his naked shoulders,
    As it falls and flecks an oak-tree
    Through the rifted leaves and branches.
    O′er the water floating, flying,
    Something in the hazy distance,
    Something in the mists of morning,
    Loomed and lifted from the water,
    Now seemed floating, now seemed flying,
    Coming nearer, nearer, nearer.
    Was it Shingebis the diver?
    Or the pelican, the Shada?
    Or the heron, the Shuh-shuh-gah?
    Or the white goose, Waw-be-wana,
    With the water dripping, flashing,
    From its glossy neck and feathers?
    It was neither goose nor diver,
    Neither pelican nor heron,
    O'er the water floating, flying,
    Through the shining mist of morning,
    But a birch canoe with paddles,
    Rising, sinking on the water,
    Dripping, flashing in the sunshine;
    And within it came a people
    Can it be the sun descending
    O′er the level plain of water?
    Or the Red Swan floating, flying,
    Wounded by the magic arrow,
    Staining all the waves with crimson,
    With the crimson of its life-blood,
    Filling all the air with splendor,
    Filling all the air with plumage?
    Yes; it is the sun descending,
    Sinking down into the water;
    All the sky is stained with purple,
    All the water flushed with crimson!
    No; it is the Red Swan floating,
    Diving down beneath the water;
    To the sky its wings are lifted,
    With its blood the waves are reddened!
    Over it the Star of Evening

    Hangs suspended in the twilight,
    Walks in silence through the heavens.

    Incantations the last good old Mike Oldfield before Platinum & the synth hit music era of the 1980's but I like that era too until the 1990's when most went wrong.

    I remember finding the vinyl while browsing the record store one day. It was warped and the cover was folded, but I grabbed it; I wasn't sure that I'd ever find it again. Luckily digital came around and released the recordings. But I am stunned by this video capture. Thanks for sharing!

    53:45 I was at this concert and was so mad when the concert had to be abandoned due to those hooligans throwing paper airplanes at the band. I think one of the airplanes hit one of the keyboard players in the eye. Such a shame that those few spoiled it for the rest of us.

    I just rediscoverd this by buying the remaster CD of Incantations for a very reasonable price. They don't make 'm like that anymore. Not even Oldfield himself who has been trying to reinvent Tubular Bells too many time. Not that ther where no other highpoints since then.Crisis and Amarok also still rate high on my list.

    Really amazing to see this. I remember having the Exposed CD back in the mid 80s... also had a VHS but don't think it was this concert as I recall it was outdoors. Wow... so bloody amazing... the only detractor being that Mike never played that guitar solo from Pt3... but Pt4 with the great vibraphone passages in different time signatures. I honestly think Mike Oldfield really peaked here.

I bought Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits... not sure it actually still works :)

      @@fishfire_2999 I think I bought a sharp CD player for around 150 quid in 86 it was pretty rubbish to be honest. It had some incompatibilities with CDs that were beyond a certain length.
      It only lasted about two years and then I bought a Sony one for about 200. Considering I was only on about 50 quid a week in the shipyard it was pretty expensive for the time.
