  • ‪@gofishbc‬'s Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery in Abbosford has a new facility which makes trout production a lot more efficient and environmentally friendly! The new freshwater recirculating aquaculture system leaves a smaller environmental footprint because it has no impact on the local aquifers and all waste products are filtered out of the recycled water. It has also cut down production time and delivered higher quality trout for anglers in British Columbia as the hatchery has complete control of the rearing environment. Projects like this are only possible because of your freshwater fishing licence! This was filmed in spring 2023 with my good friend Charlotte Lawson who was the manager of Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery at the time, she has retired since then. 🙂

      Yep! The total number of fish stocked during the last fiscal year was 6 million fish. Lots of opportunities out there for anglers to catch trout. I'd say our freshwater fishing licence is money well spent.

    They also got an illegal pond in the back that sometimes get salmon species stuck in it like Coho.

    Hey rod did they happen to mention to you if they ever throw brood stock in the lakes anymore? I remember when I was a kid (30 years ago)you would see the odd 5lber come out of the local ponds. A kid caught something like a 10lber out of green timbers when they first made the lake they threw a few of those lunkers in.

      Brood release hasn't been done for almost ten years now. For one, the broods are now kept at the Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery where all the spawning is done, so Lower Mainland doesn't have access to them anymore. Secondly, the ministry decided that we shouldn't be releasing them for public use anymore due to the quality of those fish.

      @@FishingwithRod thanks I've been curious about that for a long time. Yeah I wouldn't imagine an old tank reared fish like that would be very tasty. Fun to catch tho!

      Haha... This was a year ago... There are two dozen lakes where these fish are going to between Squamish and Hope each spring. This year's first stocking starts next week actually, watch for updates here, my FB and IG. There'll be stories etc to let everyone know where the trucks are.

    I'm curious about why larger numbers are not released while smaller and then allowed to grow to catchable size after they're released.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  6 месяцев назад +8

      Yep, good question! These rainbow trout raised to 225g for release are specifically for lakes in the Metro Vancouver region. These lakes are low in nutrient, so lack the ability to grow big fish. If not caught, a lot of them would probably die from starvation eventually. For our lakes in the interior region, a different strategy is used. Fish around 5 to 10g are released into those lakes and because they are high in nutrient, these yearlings can grow up to 6lb or more.

      @@FishingwithRod Thaks, Rod. That's actually what I thought - that a lake they're released into might not be adequately equipped to feed them. 👍

As that means that my fishing license money is being spent, somewhere else WITCH IS DISGRACEFUL. ie. I will not renew my fishing license next year. Not pay out money for chatting pikeminows .
